Surgeon TestimonialWalter Chlysta, M.D.My first impression was that he was very kind and took alot of time going over everything. Each visit, during the 6 month process to get approved and all the tests done, he was very helpful and positive. He called me at home to tell me results of tests which impressed me. I always had my questions answered, even the ones that seemed silly. When I had surgery, he was great and I felt very well taken care of. The aftercare was excellant and the support that the entire office gives is so great. They all gave encouragement each step of the way. THe Support group has been very helpful. I highly recommend Dr. Chlysta and his Bariatric team.

I finally heard
directly from
Pamela. Here I
thought she was home
tucked in her own
comfy bed, this was
not the case. She
is still in the
hospital.
Her surgeon was
concerned with her
blood sugars being
high and the amount
of work he did that
is now causing her
more pain and gas.
Her kidney function
is also low. Since
she is feeling so
bad and with her
surgeon away to
attend a funeral,
the attending
surgeon decided it
best to keep her
another day for
observation.
I know this is a
busy time of year,
but please take a
moment offer our
sister some support
and hugs.
You are in my
thoughts and
prayers, Pamela.
Hugs, your "ANGEL"
Terri

I have been thinking about having WLS for a few years. After taking a new job, I found that my hospital offered RNY and I got very interested in making a life changing decision. I once was healthy and thinner, I even used to jog for a few years, took exercise classes, snow skied and was active. I had several weight gains with my two childrens and was able to get it off without too much trouble, but after a year of medication for an irregular heartbeat , I was unable to jog or do any aerobics and gained eighty lbs. From that time on, I struggled to keep weight off and went up and down. But each time I lost the weight, I would gain more each time. My story is similar to all the others. After awhile, I became a Diabetic, had hypertension and then high cholesterol. The past two years has become a battle in trying to lose weight to improve those numbers, but with no success.
I am married with two grown children and three beautiful granddaughters. I want to be able to enjoy life again with more energy to enjoy my family with out the stuggle of pain and lack of energy. We are active in our church and enjoy traveling. I look forward to learning alot from this forum and hope to be able to qualify for my surgery.

Well - haven't posted for a while, but still feeling good. Today I had a repeat of the EGD and colonoscopy from 1 year ago. Dr. Wanted to take a look at the esophagus for signs of reflux and the colon for any more polyps. He said things looked good but sent off a few samples to pathology. The procedure wasn't too bad. I asked if I could have a lighter sedation so I could watch again and he said sure! My BP was good as well as my O2 sats after the Morphine and Versed, but I was having PVC every 3 beats, which usually makes me feel a bit uneasy. Actually the prep is what is the pits! I started with the drinking of 4000 cc or 2 liter bottles worth of Golytely at 1pm and didn't have any action until 5pm. After that it was about every hour till bedtime and I got up three times during the night. Dr wasn't happy that I still had "stuff" in there, but I don't know what else to do. It's pretty powerful liquid. Felt really good, except for some waves of nausea after it was all over, but came home and fixed scrambled eggs and toast and felt pretty good. About an hour later (2Pm) I felt kind of queasy and sleepy, so I took a nap for about an hour or so. Still heard some rumblings all afternoon and still now at 7pm.
The weight loss is at a standstill at the present - bounce back and forth between 204 and 207. A few days ago I hit 203, but the next day I was up again to 205. I need to get back to basics and get this moving again. My new friend from the support group and I are walking in two races - one for the Labor or Love at the Chapel and one for Obesity Walk. So we are doing a bit over a mile at the Goodyear Park nearby Ellet. It was a nice walk last week and pretty quiet, so I look forward in doing it again.
See Dr Gilberson tomarrow and then need an appointment to see Dr C for my results. This week is busy and taking a day off to go to our favorite country fair for the holiday weekend. Then everything will get back to normal with a more routine work day.

Had a wonderful time in Hawaii and just posted some pictures. There were about 1000 to chose from, for all nine of us had a camera in hand at one time or another and took so many great shots. The memories will be there for a long time. I got to do the Diamond Head hike, swim with a dolphin, swim with sea turtles, snorkel 3 different places, bike 28 miles down the Haleakela volcano. and visited the most beautiful islands on earth. I can't fullly discribe the experience, but I know that being 70+ lbs lighter, made this trip even better.

Well - two more days and my family and I will be off to Hawaii for 2 weeks. We have been very busy getting ready and I can't believe that the year of planning has flown by. And the 6 months since surgery has also been amazing. I have completely revamped my wardrobe. I am changing sizes monthly. So I borrowed some clothes from my mom who has every size down to 14s and I did a bit of shopping. Last slacks and pedal pushers were size 16's and tops were large in the regular ladies sizes. I am almost at 70 lbs lost since the day I came home from the hospital and 78 total since I started this journey one year ago on June 7th, when I met the surgeon. It seems to have gone by so quickly. I love how energetic I feel and still don't see myself as thinner. But that time will come! Looking forward to a agreat summer, but first to enjoy the family vacation for the next several weeks! Aloha!

Update 5/8/08 on May 8, 2008 11:11 am
My bicycle riding is getting easier. Last weekend we did 10.5 miles on the Towpath. My butt was sore, as was my knee but it felt good to accomplish something that hasn't been done in years. Two weeks ago we did 8.5 miles and the week before we did 5.5 miles. I think my husband is surprised that I am doing this - so am I! So I am feeling more confident to be able to ride down the crater in Maui in June. Can't wait! 5 more weeks!
My loss is still slow - haven't lost much in two weeks, but last week at least 6 people stopped me to say how "skinny" I was getting! Please! I am no where near skinny, but the near 60lbs lost since surgery is starting to show. My mom said she though my face was thinner, but she didn't notice anything else. Oh well! I worry that I am eating too much on occassion. I don't have a full feeling as I do with the meats that bother me. CHili goes down so easily, but most chicken, turkey, pork and fish give me some problems. Beef hasn't been a problem, no matter what way it is done. I had a tuna crossoint and it went down easily which surprised and worried me. I was told bread would be hard. I will have to remove this from my lists because of the carb count. Would really like to do some shakes again to keep on track and not get in the habit of eatting those things that don't hurt, like bread. Might help the loss. But even when I was doing all liquids and protein shakes, my loss was slow!

Update 4/24/08 on April 24, 2008 12:20 pm
Sewing maching back in action! Also had a chance to check my mom's closet and she sent me home with two bags of size 16,18, & 1x . Some things had tags on them and as she watched me try them on, she said to check some other closets in the house. Mom has early Alheimers adn COPD so she doesn't get out much now, so most of these clothes were bought years ago. I don't have to shop for any other summer things now! I am all set for my Hawaii trip.

My Story
I have weight problems for over 30 years. I am not unique, I have had my shares of weight loss and gains.
I have been a nurse for over 42 years in the care of moms and babies. I worked in the OR in my early career and became a Labor nurse after my children were born. I also cross trained to work in Maternity and nursery and was happy to be there any day. I also taught childbirth classes for 14 years. I loved teaching and thought someday I would do that full time. When my child were in middle school I decided to go back to get my degrees in nursing. It took a while but finally got my Bachelors in Nursing in 1985 and my Masters in Nursing in 1987. I also got certified in Maternity nursing during that time. I left my staff nurse position for an Advance Practice position as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in 1987. When my DH changed jobs in 1991,we moved to New Jersey and I became a Manager of Maternity in Princeton. My daugher had her first baby during those years and I became homesick and wanted to see my grandchildren grow, so I convinced my husband to move back to Ohio. He works out of our home so it was no problem for him - he just wanted me to find another job. So we came back to Ohio, I got a position as a Nurse Educator in Akron and a few years later, my former position as CNS became available so I traveled back and forth to Youngstown until July of 2006. During that time I became a International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. That was a very rewarding job and I was so happpy in my position. Well, a few years ago, that hospital began facing financial problems and in the spring of 2006 I learned that my job was to be eliminated before the end of the year. My faith in God was tested, but I let the Lord handle the situation. I began interviewing in April of that year. What made it so special is that there are very few CNS positions available, but for devine intervention I was able to look at three positions. I didn't know where the Lord was going to put me, or if I would even get a job. But praise God - I lost my job on a Friday, and as I left the office of my boss I felt at peace with it and just ask the Lord to help me get throught this. Well, I was offered a new job in Akron by Tuesday! I was amazed by God's timing in all of this. I have a job I love, with all the nice things that go with it. Especially since this is where I was introduced to the idea of WLS for me. I believe that I was supposed to be here at this time.
