Surgeon Testimonial

Laurence K. Tanaka M.D.
Met with Dr. Tanaka and he was professional and reassuring. What a big contrast from Dr. Horgan!!!rnrnHe is a man of few words but I trust him totally. I was so at ease when I had my surgery it surprised me.

Recap of the past to present 2009
on November 29, 2009 4:34 pm
When I started this journey for the second time it started with just a thought this time last year. I was so busy getting my AS degree, recovering from having a baby, going back and forth with my marriage, and purchasing a home and didn't realize I had reached 285 lbs! I don't know what I was thinking when I put my clothes on that use to be very loose and now they were a tad bit tight. When I say really loose to the point I could pull them up and down without unfastening them; and now I had to lay down to fasten them. That's how big I had gotten. Maybe I realized the weight had finally waited enough and decided to creep upon me while I was resting which is something I hardly had time for. Maybe it was when my lil short arms had a hard time reaching my ass (lol)  while in the bathroom when I realized I had to do something fast! It was that moment in the bathroom that really disturbed me!

My weight has always been a Ferris Wheel it would go up and down in a circular motion. Well in March 2009 I finally got my PCP to agree that maybe WLS would be a must if I am going to conquer this weight problem and become healthy. So in March 2009 I attended to the seminar at UCSD Medical Center called the office for an appointment that was scheduled in May 2009. Well from there the road was bumpy and I weighed in at there office at 284.5, went back 30 days later and was 285.2 to discover that the surgeon had lied about performing all surgeries. So I moved over to Pacific Bariatric @ Scripps Mercy in July 2009 and weighed in there at 280 (didn't want to lose too much weight before I got accepted for the WLS program somewhere because different docs requirements vary and I didn't know if I was going to have to lose 20 lbs before surgery or not so I was holding it down slowly)!

After fighting with the insurance to grant me approval to go outside their group I was finally approved for surgery in two weeks but unfortunately wasn't expecting it that fast and asked that it be postponed almost 30 days from my approval date which was at the end of September 2009. Surgery day I weighed in at 273. I was down 11 or 12 lbs since I started this journey knowing it was only going to get better from here on out.

Today, I am down a total of 45lbs since I started in March 2009, and 40lbs since my first visit at my current surgeon's office, and 33lbs since my surgery. For the most part I haven't had any problems post op no more than not getting in enough protein, throwing up because I don't chew my food properly, or sometime forget to weight to drink 15 minutes before or after my meals. I haven't dumped on any sugars but of course I only ate sugar on Thanksgiving and it was good. I am a liberal person so I think it's ok to indulge just that one time. I hate dieting so I refuse to treat this journey like a diet but rather my new life so I will make mistakes but the point is as long as I get back on track.

I look forward to all the new changes that are going on within my body as well as the changes on the outside. I must admit I am getting frustrated at trying to figure out what I can and can't eat but I am making it work. I do know that when the scale is not moving my waistline is so I can careless about that number on the scale! I will continue to weigh on Sunday although I do weigh everyday every chance I get but I will refrain from posting it on here until Sunday.

Happy Journey everyone and be blessed!

8 week update
on November 22, 2009 2:28 pm
Ok, I don't really have much to report. I can eat a lot more foods than before. I am still a little scared to eat most stuff. I haven't experienced dumping when I have eaten something high in sugars. I can't say I have totally stuck to the plan but I have for the most part. I can eat chicken now. I have tried a few bits of thinly sliced pork that my hubby baked and beef without the fat. I still can't get the protein in but I am trying.

The other day my supervisor said I looked skinny and that she could tell that I have lost some more weight. I told her the scale isn't moving but I know I have lost a lot of inches! Anyways I will be back for another update later.

1 Month Post Op
on November 7, 2009 7:09 pm

Hey y'all!! I had my first post op appointment with my surgeon yesterday and everything went pretty well. I still have this really bad cold/flu that I can't kick but hopefully it let up this weekend. I went back to work Monday and everyone is so encouraging. Everyday they seem to be more excited than me. They say they can tell by my face and my side profile. My scale and the surgeon's scale is about a lb off with mine being the lowest weight so I am going to just add a lb to mine and only weigh on Sunday starting next week.

I labs showed that I had a super high B12 level (almost 4000) and low iron and other than that everything else was the same as before surgery. I have decided that I am only going to take B12 every other day to see if that works and then the surgeon just prescribed iron. I knew I was going to have a problem with iron because I always have plus I was on my period when we did my labs last.

I am pretty happy with my weight loss. I mean I can get back into my "club clothes" that I had out grown since right before my last pregnancy. My work clothes are starting to hang to so I guess I will be shopping soon. I haven't decided what size I want to buy because I don't want to get them too small either. I asked my surgeon what is his proposed goal weight for me and he said 140, that's not too bad but my personal goal is 120 mind you I am only 5'1; but we will see.

I still can't eat much or at least I am scared to eat! The surgeon told me to just keep trying and that it was still too early to eat meat so just try the seafood as much as I can. I am glad catfish was on his list because I love me some catfish, just not fried and I have to work on loving it broiled!

Well until next time....luv y'all!!
