Jonathan Aranow, M.D. Why did I decide to drive from Rhode Island, an hour's drive one way to have Dr Aranow as my surgeon? Read on to find out...
May 2005
My first impression of Dr. Aranow was a good one. He attended the seminar in scrubs and was very casual. I like that. He seemed young, but said, "Yes, I'm old enough to be a surgeon! I'm older than you think."
I knew that this man was the surgeon for me at that first seminar. His successful surgery rate, incidence rate and entire bariatric program (which he is the director of) is just top of the line.
He covered literally EVERYTHING about bariatric surgery, it's pros and cons, potential complications, positive outcomes, etc during the seminar. He has devoted 95% of his career in surgery doing just bariatric surgery.
When I had my first meeting with him in his office, I was very pleased with both his bedside manner/personality, knowledge and overall time spent with me for that first visit. It was a Friday, and he was running late due to surgery, plus he was about to leave on vacation. He didn't rush our visit, and was very accommodating and answered all of my questions (though I didn't have many because he covers so much material in that informational seminar).
Future patients should know that Dr Aranow takes his role as bariatric surgeon very seriously and agrees to take you on as a patient for life once you commit to the bariatric program. But, he expects the same from his patients in return and demands strict dicipline in following the instructions that are laid out for you as a patient, for the rest of your life.
He is a busy surgeon with lots of patients, so, if you get frustrated with having to wait for your appointment once in a while because he may be tied up with a surgery, than don't bother with Dr Aranow. BUT, being a perfectionist in his surgeries is why he's so busy and successful.
He makes sure your surgery is "perfect" before he'll close you up. I would hope that he'd not rush my surgery just to get to office visits! It all works out in the end. Give yourself enough time to add in some waiting and to have your appointment and you'll be fine. This would be my only complaint about him, truthfully.
Dr Aranow and his staff highly emphasize the aftercare program. They make it known that they are a phone call, or email away with any questions and problems and are always very helpful.
The Middlesex Hospital staff are all very well informed and learned in RNY surgery and take good care of you while you're there.
2006
Since I wrote this review of Dr Aranow, I've lost 120 pounds and my husband has even had RNY surgery! I am still as pleased with Dr Aranow now as I was last year. I had a stomach complication (not WLS related) recently and Dr Aranow took good care of me. Though it's a bit of a pain to drive an hour one way to get to his office or Middlesex Hospital, it's the price I'm willing to pay to get the best care possible for someone like me who has altered insides!
Dr Aranow is always attending conferences and is learning new and improved ways to do RNY and LapBand surgery and how to care for all of us afterwards. I'm proud to say that "he's" my doctor!

Well, no weight loss happening around here. I am maintaining, though and that makes me happy. I've never been able to lose a lot of weight and maintain it at that weight for a period of time. Always gained it right back.
I'm eating pretty well, sometimes too many carbs, but a decent well rounded diet.
Fats don't like me. I dump on them, so, that's a good thing.
I love pretzels and roasted almonds.
The big news on my front is that my husband was promoted in his job with the FAA, so, we're moving from Rhode Island to CT near Bradley, Int'l airport in Windsor, CT. We've already bought (contracted) on a beautiful home there and we're about to market our home this week. I pray that it sells quickly.
We will be close to family again and that's a good thing. Bob is commuting 3 hours a day now and it's a big drain on him. Can't wait until we get up there.
Haven't taken any new pictures, so, I haven't posted any of late. I don't look much different.
