I am 45 yrs. old and have been thinking about/researching WLS since 2005.  I first met my surgeon, Dr. Richi, in Dec. 2007.  Since then I have been on a long journey fulfilling my insurance requirements (6 month pre-op nutrition education) and monthly weigh-ins - which makes absolutely NO sense since my insurance does not require me to lose any weight beforehand.  Go figure!  Any how... here I am.  All the I's dotted and the T's crossed.  The next phase of my journey will begin on 11/13/08.

on January 8, 2010 8:45 am
I finally have a normal BMI of 24.8!  I now weigh 140 pounds..... I have lost 104 from my highest weight of 244.  I wear size 10 or 12 pants and medium/large tops (depends on the style & brand).  My bra size went from a 42 DD to a 36 B.  10 more pounds to reach my goal

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

9 Months out and down 90 lbs.
on August 13, 2009 7:52 am
Wow, I have been meaning to update and post on here, but just took the time today - I didn't realize how long it has been.

Today is my 9 month surgiversary and I am down 90 lbs.  I now weigh 154 and I wear size 14 pants and L/XL tops.  My rings all have to be re-sized because I lost at least a size on those - my ring finger is now a size 6.  Also, my shoe size went down from a 7-1/2 to a 6-1/2 or 7, depending on the shoe...... how weird, huh?  I had heard that it was possible for that to happen, but my feet were not fat, so I did not expect it to happen to me.

I saw Dr. Richi last night and he was very pleased with my progress.  I have only vomited 3 times, and the last time was in March.  Food goes down easily for me - even the bad stuff like bread, pasta,.pretzels and potato chips.  I am still avoiding carbonated beverages and sweets, although I have had bites here & there of cake, brownies & ice cream.  I just make sure to watch it and be careful.

Also, I do go to the gym, although this summer I have slacked.  Once the kids are back in school I can get back to my regular routine.

That's about all for now......... hope to update again in a month or so.

6-1/2 Months Out... Down 82 Pounds :)
on May 30, 2009 5:05 am
I had every intention of posting a blog and a photo on May 13th, which was my 6 month surgiversary, but I just didn't get around to it.  Now I am approaching 7 months post-op and I am still seeing results.  For the month of May I have lost 7.5 lbs.  I think this is the first month I have not lost 10 lbs. - but I am ok with it.

As for clothes - I am now in a 14/14w/16 for pants and shorts and a large or x-large top - both depend on the brand and style.  Sizes can vary with different brands........ as I have also discovered with bras!  A "C" cup can vary from one brand to the next.  I don't understand how bra manufacturers can get away with that.  Don't they have the A-B-C system for a reason??  Anyhow... pre-op I was in a 42 DD, now I am a 38/40 C or D - depending on the brand.  I have found Ambrielle at JC Penney to be the best fit with great support to hold the sagging girls up.  I think eventually I will need a boob job.  My upper arms have some sagging skin, but nothing drastic that warrants surgery - I can live with what I have.  So far the thighs and tummy are shrinking nicely, with no sagging skin, wrinkles or flaps.

It seems as though the hair loss is slowing down.  My hairstylist assures me my hair loss has not been bad - of course it seems more drastic to me, especially since my hair was thinning pre-op.  She gives me the best cut for my fine, straight hair and a little "comb-over" in the front, just above the bangs - that is where it has thinned the most.  I take Biotin twice a day and to be honest with you, I have not noticed any change in my nails.  They were always soft and chipped/flaked easily and that has not improved at all.  So I wonder if the Biotin is working or maybe I need to take more.

So that is it for now.  I will try to post some new pics at the 7 month mark.  Happy losing everyone!!

New Person in the Mirror
on May 8, 2009 3:12 am
Ok, I know a lot of WLS patients have body dysmorphia when they lose a lot of weight.  They look in the mirror and still see the same heavy person.  Fortunatey, I don't have that problem.  I was so worried that I would because it is so common after WLS.  But for me, I look in the mirror and I swear I see a skinnier person than I am!  Is that possible?  To see yourself thinner than you actually are?  I'm not complaining here.... I'm relieved.  I see the weight coming off and I like the results.  Now if all WLS patients could see themselves the same way, wouldn't that be great?!

I can't believe I have lost 70 lbs. in less than 6 months.  I mean, this is just SO unreal!  I feel great, I have no problems eating (pooping is another story from time to time) and now the warmer weather is here and I am ready to show off the NEW me!

My Story

I am a 44 yr. old married mom of 11 yr. old twins.  I have been battling my weight since early adulthood.  I can recall being in my early 20's and having to go to the gym 5 times a week for an hour each day just to maintain my weight at 145.  I am 5' 3" tall and in the past 17 years have ballooned up to 238 (although my highest was a year ago at 244).  I have done Atkins and Weight Watchers.  I seem to lose 25 lbs. or so, then gain it all back PLUS some.  I can only recall once in the past 5 years that the first digit on the scale was a "1".

I have arthritis in both knees and have recently been diagnosed with high BP.  I had gestational diabetes when pregnant, so I am also at risk of developing that again.

In early Dec. 2007 I met with a bariatric surgeon and discussed WLS.  On Dec. 18, 2007 I had an echo-cardiogram, an upper GI and an ultrasound of my liver and gallbladder.

On Jan. 3, 2008 I met with a registered dietician - Carolyn Losure.  What a super nice person she is!  She convinced me I could eat Tilapia... so I bought it and cooked it as she had suggested... YUCK!  (I am not a seafood person.)  Any way, she took her time with me and my appointment lasted 1-1/2 hours.  She reviewed my eating habits and usual meals and informed me that about 80% of what I eat now will not "go down" post-op.  She discussed the changes I will have to make - such as chewing my food to the texture of Cream of Wheat.  She gave me weekly meal plans to follow, but I have not yet gone out to buy everything I will need (I don't have much of it in the house!)  I have to start cutting back on beef and fats and try new things.  I have always been a picky eater, so this should be interesting to say the least.

At this first appointment I had to make an initial payment of $150, which is not covered by insurance.  She will be overseeing my monthly weigh-ins when I attend the monthly group session.  I think at my next visit I have to pay another $150, then the one after that the final $150.

The next step is the psych appointment on Jan. 7th.
