Surgeon Testimonial

Bruce Brient, M.D.
Very knowledgeable/Very upbeat/ Polite / FriendlyrnI have now been a patient of Dr. Brient's for over a year now - and I am still so happy that he is my surgeon. He is great in all respects. Whenever I have needed him, he has been there for me. I have had a few complications and he has taken care of everything for me. I would rate him 100% all of the time in everything. He will explain everything to you so that you will understand what is going to happen or what is going on. There has never been a time when I could not reach him within an hour or so when I needed him. I honestly can not think of anything negative to say about this man - surgeon. How many surgeons will give you their cell phone number? I personally have not had any negative dealings with Dr. Brient. The staff at the center have always been available to me. I recommend this center to anyone that is contemplating WLS.

Recovered - Again
on January 11, 2009 4:48 am
I think I am fully recovered this time from my surgery of 11/17/08.  What is the saying: "Third time is the charm"?  As for me, I hope so.  My weight this morning is 120.2 and I am proud of that.  I would like to stay this size.  I have to admit - I never dreamed from the beginning of this journey that I would have gotten this small.  It seems as if all of my life that I have had a "butt" but I don't have one now.  It has vanished.  Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining.  I have a lot of energy and am beginning to enjoy life once again.  I returned to work on 01/05/09 for the 1st time in 3-1/2months - a bit scary - people did not recognize me.  I  still have eating problems - throwing up - but I just don't know what to do about that.  I will be seeing my surgeon on Tuesday to let him know what is going on.  It seems that my food does not move out soon enough.  Also, I am going to have to start a journal on my eating - I hate to have to do that - but I will.  I have gone from size 24-26 pants to size 8/10 pants. I can wear Jr size tops - Medium.  My shoe size has gone from a size 8 to a size 7.  It is really expensive to re-clothe yourself from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet.  I have found some really nice clothing at our local Hospice Attic and will continue to look for more good bargains.  I will be posting some new pics later.

On The Road Again
on November 30, 2008 4:41 am
I am now on the road again to recovery from what I hope to be my last surgery.  Everything went good.  Basically, my surgeon redid my total bypass and did some repair work to my intestines.  My weight this morning is at 126.6 lbs!!!!  Can't remember the day that I saw that on scales that I was standing on.  I am back to the beginning of my eating and it is boring.  I will be glad when I healed once more.  I am still happy with the decision that I made 18 months ago to have this surgery even though I have been through all that I have.  Overall, I have been reborn.  Until next time.

Shrinking
on October 22, 2008 4:11 am
Just posted a new picture!!!  My adventure continues.  Last month I had my gall bladder out.  In November, I have to have another surgery to correct a problem with my intestines.  My intestines seem to be flipping causing me pain and slow down of digestion.  This is one reason my weight loss has been so fast.  I will be glad to get this over with and move on.  I am feeling fine and look pretty good - I just can not eat very much at all.  Yes, even though I have been through what I have been through, I would do this all over again.  Will post again soon

Down, down, down
on September 28, 2008 9:48 am
Well, here I go again with my monthly post.  I had to have my gallbladder taken out on 9/15/08 and am trying to get over that hump!!!  From things that I have read it is common for the gallbladder to go bad when you lose a  lot of weight real fast which Ihave done.  Just another road to cross but I am ready.  As of this morning I am down 89.6 lbs since my surgery and am loving it.  Before the gallbladder surgery my energy level was out of the roof and that was sooooo good.  Can't wait to get back there.  I should be back to normal in another couple of weeks.  Have to see the surgeon on 9/30/08 and see what he has to say!!  With all of the obstacles that I have come across so far, I would do this surgery all over again.  As usual, till next time.

Goin' Down
on August 24, 2008 3:58 am
As of this morning, I have lost a total of 74.4 lbs. Not bad for 5 months.  I still have about 25 more pounds to goal.  I am just going to wait this out as I don't really know if I would look very good at 125 pounds as I have a very small face and so far it is still looking pretty good.  Also, at 56 years of age, I really don't want my face to get wrinkled like so many others that I have seen.  I can hide the loose skin as I am not a person to show all of my body.  I have never been one to have the want to wear a bikini.  In other words, I am a conservative dresser.  My loose skin does not look real bad at this point - I really need to get to doing some exercising.  I have had some wow moments - I don't have to go to the plus sizes anymore!!!  It seems that every other week, I have to sit down and take out the sewing machine and take up my pants.  I had to buy new capri's when I went back to work cause the pants that I  had before the surgery would fall off.  I am trying to wait  before I buy anymore pants - but I did buy one new pair of trousers last week - size 16 - and they are loose.  Very proud of that moment.  Won't be long and I will weigh less that my husband.  That will be a real "WOW" moment for me.   Eating is OK.  I just have to take it one day at the time.  One day is good and the next day - can't really eat.  I try.  Time to shower so that we can go check out the rivers - all the extra water that TS Fay brought to us has our rivers flowing.  Till next time.  I will post more pictures soon.

My Story

First of all:  I am a 55 year old female living in N Florida.  I have lived here most of my adult life. Fighting my weight has been a life long thing with me.  I have done just about every diet out there.  I lose and gain back even more.  When I was 34 years old I destroyed my right knee which put a cramp in my normally active lifestyle.  You have to learn new ways to do things.  I have had 3 surgeries and during all of the time I was laid up, weight would creep up on you.    So then it would be on to another diet.  Again to lose and then gain back.  I have been a member in gyms and have been active in other ways.  As one gets older, the pounds come on a lot easier than you can take them off.

I have a sedentary type job with minimal moving around.  Actually at this point, I can't do a lot of moving around.  I am lucky to get around to do the necessary things that my job requires of me.  I can not do a lot of the things around the house that I need to do because of my weight.

I am at the point that going to work and going home are my routine.  My husband is retired and during the day he goes out and takes pictures to show me when I get home, that is my outing.  I will be glad to get ot join him - I enjoy being outside and can't wait until we can go bike riding again.

Now, on to the other part of this:

I am 5'1" and weigh 258 pounds.  I have a BMI of 48.8- dangerous..  My blood pressure is beginning to creep up on me and I have GERD problems daily that are getting worse.  I have gotten to the point that some of the personal things that I need to do I am no longer able to do - pedicures/foot massages- upkeep.   My back, hips, knees and ankles are really bothering me.  I am very concerned about losing my mobility.

I work with a few people that have already had WLS and have done quite well.  One of them told me to call NFRMC Obesity Center and they would send me a packet of materials.  Well, I did that and that is when my journey started   5/2007.  I saw my PCP in June and I started doing a 6 month doctor documented diet.  I at first tried slim fast program - but that was not enough for me.  I then started taking a diet pill and had to increase my blood pressure medicine to twice daily.  The nurse in the surgical group said that the outline of my letter for the insurance company looked real good. When the holidays are over, I will have to start pushing ahead to get this process really moving.  I have already done the initial blood work and had my psych exam and he has already written my letter.  My PCP is in the process of writing his letter.

I will stop this for now.  Till next time.
