Surgeon TestimonialEric SmithDr. Smith is a really nice guy. My first impressions of him were great. @ the seminar he seemed almost passionate about WLS in general, and he was very kind and attentive to anyone who had questions. I have to be honest here and say that the other surgeon that was presenting w/him seemed bored and was very short w/people's questions. He acted like most of the questions were stupid as opposed to Dr. Smith who answered every question to the best of his ability, and he didn't cut people off either. Another thing that impressed me about Dr. Smith was that after the seminar was over, I stayed for @ least 30 minutes talking to an old friend. I noticed that almost that whole time Dr. Smith was talking to the same man, giving him his undivided attention. That said alot to me. I want my surgeon to be a GREAT surgeon but @ the same time I want him to listen to EVERYTHING that I have to say. In the office Dr. Smith was great also. I've never had alot of questions or concerns but I know he would take the time needed to adress them all if I did. He also did a pre-op Endoscopy on me. I've had one in the past that left me w/a sore throat for awhile but after having this procedure w/Dr. Smith I couldn't even tell that he had done anything involving my throat. He had a great bedside manor during this procedure also. I have not had the surgery yet, I am scheduled for Jan. 30, 2008, and I will let everyone know how it went but as of right now, I feel very confident in Dr. Smith, and I'm extremely glad he's doing my surgery:) rnUPDATE: I am now a close to 4 and half months out from surgery, and I have to say that my opinion of Dr. Smith has only gotten better, if that's possible. My surgery went GREAT, and I still have had no complications whatsoever. Dr. Smith's aftercare program, and the Surgical Weight Loss Team @ KDMC have been absolutely wonderful. I feel that one of the biggest reasons that I have had no complications is because of Dr. Smith's competance as a surgeon, and the very involved preparation that the Sugical Weight Loss Team put me through before surgery. I give my thanks to Dr. Smith and the Surgical Weight Loss Team (especially Rayetta Parker, R.N.) for helping me to get my life back!!!

10 MONTHS OUT, DOWN 125 LBS. SINCE SURG.,... on December 1, 2008 10:35 pm
So I haven't updated in awhile, life has been really busy. I am doing so much more now than I was this time last year that it is crazy. I started this journey a year ago, and I have to say that I am VERY pleased w/ the results.
I do have to have an EGD done in January to check for a possible ulcer but other than that I am doing GREAT. I got the stomach flu the day that I went to see Dr. Smith for my 9 month checkup, (even though I was 9.5 months out @ the time of the appointment) and that morning before going to the appt. I had some odd stomach pains. I didn't know that I was getting sick, so I told Dr. Smith about it. He said that ulcers were pretty common for people around 10-12 months out from surgery, so we better do the EGD to check. I haven't had any more of those pains since I was sick, so I'm thinking that I don't have an ulcer, knock on wood =)
I hope that all of my friends out there are doing well, and I'll try to update next month! Much love to all!!!

8 MONTHS OUT, DOWN 111 LBS. SINCE SURG.,... on September 30, 2008 11:22 am
I had my monthly appt. w/ my primary care physician today, and I have lost 111 lbs. since surgery, and 132 total lbs. total since I began this journey back in november of 2007. 132 lbs. gone in less than a year. Isn't that crazy? I still look @ pictures of me @ my highest weight, and I cannot believe that was me. Not even a year ago!!! I've went from a size 3x or 30/32 to a medium/large on top, and a size 15 on bottom (due to all of my saggy skin on my stomach, lol). I only have 27 lbs. to go to meet my original goal weight of 160 lbs. Unofficially, I have changed my goal weight to 150 lbs. I keep it unofficial and just something in my head just in case my body settles @ more than that =)
I am totally healthy, still getting all of my protein and taking my vitamins every day. I still have not even thrown up once since surgery. I have been so very blessed, and I thank God every day for giving me my life back. I need to do another before and after but my husband has to do it for me. I will try to get one posted soon. I hope that all of my friends out there r well. Much love to all...Katie

7 MONTHS OUT, DOWN 102 LBS. SINCE SURG.,... on September 1, 2008 12:57 am
I'm a couple of days late on my update, I was gonna try to start making my update on the 30th of every month but I guess I'll just shoot for that next month. Things r going pretty good. I saw my surgeon on the 28th of August, and all of my labs looked really good. I'm not feeling too hot, though. Even though my B12 was good, I'm going to start getting a shot every 2 weeks now instead of just once a month. I have been feeling great for the first couple of weeks after my shot, then towards the middle of the month, I'm zapped of all energy, and I have to MAKE myself get to the Life Center to workout. I just had my B12 shot less than a week ago but I think I'm coming down w/ the flu or something.
My kids don't get sick very often, they actually haven't been sick since I had surgery 7 months ago but school started a couple of weeks ago, my youngest started his first year of preschool, and he is already sick. I think I'm catching his bug.
I'm still glad that I had this surgery, and I still feel very blessed to have had no complications. I hope that all of my friends out there r doing well...Much Love...Katie

6 MONTHS OUT, DOWN 91 LBS. SINCE SURG.,... on July 31, 2008 8:08 pm
So I was 6 months out from surgery yesterday, and I'm down 91 lbs. since surgery on January 30th of this year, and 112 lbs. down since November of 2007. I had my monthly appt. w/ my PCP for my B-12 shot today, and I've lost 10 lbs. since my last appt. I had been losing 12-13 lbs. a month so that was a little disappointing but my doctor reminded me that I am working out and building muscle. I know that the weight loss is going to slow down but sometimes it can be frustrating when I'm working my butt off @ the gym and following a healthy diet. I do treat myself sometimes to things that I shouldn't have but not too often. I try to do that so that I don't feel the need to do it all of the time.
I'm feeling really good most of the time, although I do have some days that get kinda rough when it gets close to time for my B-12 shot. I'm getting all of my protein and taking my vitamins like I should, so I'm starting to think I might need that B-12 shot more than once a month. I see my surgeon @ the end of August and I'll be getting the crapload of labwork done. My 4 month labwork came back great. Everything was normal except for my good cholesterol so hopefully I'll just be needing the B-12 twice a month or so.
This summer has been so wonderful for me. I've been able to do so much more w/ my kids, and I've had so much energy that it's crazy. Everyone around me has been so supportive. I haven't had any problems w/ any negativity from anyone. I think that everyone sees how hard I'm working and they respect that. I continue to feel that this surgery is the BEST thing that I could have ever done for myself and my family. I hope all my friends out there r doing well, and I'll update @ 7 months. Much love to all...Katie

5 Months Out, Down 84 lbs. since surg., 105 lb.... on July 2, 2008 2:41 pm
So I'm 5 months out from surgery as of 3 days ago, and I became a member of the Century Club 5 lbs. ago!!! Life is so good:) I feel wonderful, like a whole new woman, and I'm 15 lbs. away from my next mini-goal which is to weigh less than 200 lbs. I haven't weighed less than 200 lbs. since middle school so I will most likely be having a BIG party when that happens.
I've got so much more confidence in myself and my ability to meet my goal weight now. I actually think that the closer I get to my goal weight of 160 lbs., the more I'm thinking of changing my goal weight to 150 lbs. We will see. Just wanted to give a quick update. I hope that everyone is well!!! I added a current picture of me and one w/ my boys on July 11, 2008. I just figured out how to do this:)

My Story So I'm still trying to figure out how to get everything set up on here the way I want it, and realized from looking @ other people's profiles that there was a spot for "My Story", lol. I was wondering about that. I'm also having some problems uploading photos and getting a profile pic up, but anyways...on with my story...
I've been overweight my whole life. I don't have the same dad as my sister and 2 brothers that I grew up with so I have always been the odd ball in the family. I will explain this. My mother is a petite woman who has never been above a size 8 in her life, even during pregnancy and after giving birth to 4 children. She is the 16th child of 20, and all and I do mean ALL of her siblings are skinny with my Mom having always been one of the smallest. Let's just say size 0-2 as an example of her size while I was growing up. How crazy is it that I did NOT get the skinny gene? My sister was always tiny, one of my brothers was somewhat husky but could never have been called overweight. They all had blonde hair while I had almost black hair. The only explanation for this is that I took most of my genest including the "fat" gene from my father with whom I did not even meet until this past father's day. How ironic, lol? He is a big man now, and he has always struggled with his weight and had lots of health issues that he just happened to pass onto me. I was 26 years old when I met the man who helped make me, and though I don't look much like him now (THANK U, GOD, the man has lived a rough life and it shows) I look alot like he did in high school. I have an 18 year old half-sister who could be my twin if she wasn't like 5 inches taller than me, and I always thought I was tall @ 5 ft. 6, lol.
Anyway, I'm getting off track here. I remember the summer before I started high school getting on a scale and weighing like 180 and thinking to myself, "do I have a brick or two in my stomach or what?" because I was very active @ that time in my life. i walked everday, usually 2 or 3 miles, sometimes more. I was so busy with my friends and dreaming about boys that I honestly don't remember overeating. My weight only went up from there. I stayed @ 225 lbs. for a couple of years and honestly that was a pretty healthy weight for me. I had no health problems, no problems with exercising, and I carried my weight pretty well. Then I got into a serious relationship @ 18, got pregnant, had my baby, and one month later was in a fatal car/train accident with my new baby and my fiance'. My fiance' was killed, my baby had a skull fracture, and I was pretty tore up myself. I had a pelvic fracture, multiple broken bones, a head injury, and a lacerated liver. I've probably left some stuff out but u get the jist of it. After I got out of the hospital my weight fluctuated alot because I was on alot of meds. I was also dealing with severe anxiety and depression which I continue to battle. My weight would go up, I'd go on a diet, lose the weight, then end up gaining it back plus more. This went on for about 4 years before I met my husband. I stayed @ a solid 275 lbs. for a long time after I had my second son who just turned 3 in November. Somehow though in the last year, I've gained 40 lbs. Also through all of this, my son who was in the car/train accident has been diagnosed with Autism due to severe devolopmental delays and the fact that he is almost completely nonverbal. He is almost 8 years old now.
I have researched WLS off and on in the past but in this past year, I really dug my heels in, and I've done everything that had to be done to get where I am now. I will probably be having surgery in late January or early February of 2008. In my mind and my heart, I know that this surgery is the only way that I will lose this weight and keep it off. I'm tired of depending so much on other people to do things that I should be doing but can't because of my weight. My body has already suffered a serious trauma back in 2000 when I was in the car/train accident, and this weight is just more trauma every day.
I would love to make friends on here, especially anyone who has had their surgery @ KDMC in Ashland, KY. I don't have alot of time to get on here, and when I do, it's usually late @ night but I'd love to meet some people and share some stories. I'm also gonna really try to get this whole sight figured out, lol. I have a myspace account, and I'm telling u, it wasn't even half as hard as this sight has been for me. If anyone can offer me some help, I'd greatly appreciate it, particularly when it comes to changing my background and getting my photos uploaded. I've went through all of the steps to upload photos, they just aren't uploading for some reason. Much love to all:))
