Lots of info at the meeting today (starting liquid diet...
on October 27, 2009 9:03 pm
After reading a lot of the posts on the DS boards here, I was really confused by what a lot of people were saying.  Some people were saying that they need a high fat diet and they increase their fat intake when they reach a stall to lose more weight.  Some were even talking about how eating a Big Mac is "healthy" food for them because DS'ers only absorb about 20% for the fat eaten.  Now, I've taken plenty of health classes and eating lots of fat doesn't sound like it will help with weight loss and being healthy, even if you are only absorbing 20% (and that's only the estimated amount).

Of course people should always listen to what their doctors have to say, but still try to use some common sense.  The saying "If it sounds too good to be true, then it is."

I brought up this topic with my nutritionist today and she was really shocked at this.  It certainly isn't healthy and it isn't even good for DS'ers.  More fat equals more digestive discomfort and probable weight gain.

I also read on the boards about some people went in for surgery, were opened up, but then closed back up without surgery being done because their liver was too big.  I have been worried about it because my surgeons office does a 5 day liquid diet and I really don't want to go in for surgery and come home having been opened up and not have surgery!  I have been having a stomach ache all day (possibly stress but I don't know for sure) so I decided to start the liquid diet early since the thought of eating food makes me want to vomit right now anyway.  I can't believe surgery is in a week! It seemed so far away and now its like BAM it's right here!!!

I go to the nutritionist tomorrow
on October 26, 2009 6:41 pm
I go to the nutritionist tomorrow.  I am so excited that I am just over a week out from surgery but really nervous, too.  A friend that recently had her DS emailed me today and told me how much worse the pain was than she was expecting.  Morphine makes me itch so I am sort of worried about pain management.  I can take other pain meds like vicodin and toradol so hopefully they will help.

I hate it when people say one thing to your face...
on October 25, 2009 3:46 pm
I really hate it when someone acts so supportive of your weight loss surgery to your face but then totally bashes people who get WLS everywhere else.  I went to high school with a girl not much smaller then me and she has fluctuated a lot with her weight over the years.  Now she sells some kind of nutritional supplement that she tries to push off on people and how it is the "right" way to lose weight.  Sure, this is some kind of sales gimmick but how can she say she is so supportive of my WLS and then turn around and say the "right" way to lose weight is to do it through diet?  As opposed to the "wrong" way I am taking, according to her?  It's not like I am looking for anyone approval or blessing but don't pretendor lie to me!

Had my pre-op surgeons meeting today
on October 22, 2009 2:12 pm

pre-op surgeon meeting TODAY; nutritionist in 5 days, liquid diet in 8 days, Mom gets here in 12 days, surgery in 13 days... less than two weeks.. WOW...

I have been worried about my labs so I was pretty nervous today at my appointment.  I also had to sign a bunch of release forms (including one saying I understand that death is a possible complication to surgery) which made me even more nervous.  But all my labs were great and I didn't have any deficiencies.  I was also worried about my thyroid levels.  They have been getting worse all year but I am still not quite in the range to get medication for it.  I just have to make sure to get them checked every few months after surgery (which I have been doing anyway).  The doctor pretty much just came in, asked what I was having done (to see if I knew I think) and felt my belly to see if he could tell if there would be any problems to anticipate with the laproscopic tools but he said my belly was soft (first time I was ever glad to hear that!) and it should be fine.  He also said I should be ok taking my flight to Florida for Christmas vacation but we would have a better idea about that at the post-op appointments.  Surgery is getting SO close!
