Surgeon Testimonial

Michael L. Schwartz, M.D.
Dr. Schwartz is direct and to the point. He is compassionate and caring and a positive thinker. He genuinely cares about the well-being of the patient and wants you to succeed. He helped me get through the complications I experienced and didn't hesitate to see that I received the best care possible. I would recommend him without qualification. Minneapolis Bariatric Surgeons is a great group with a very complete program for bariatric patients.

Wednesday is your day! Just remember you are on the journey of a lifetime. Try to enjoy every minute. It may sound weird now, but know that you are cared for and prayed for here, and all too soon this will be but a memory and you will be an inspiration to someone else. I am waiting for you on the losers' bench! ~ Judy

Christmas 2007
on December 21, 2007 5:36 am
12-21-07  Wow, my 6 month surgiversary was yesterday.  I have lost 105# and feel wonderful.  Have not reduced any meds yet, due to having the stroke, but my CPA is definitely at a lower setting.  I am forever grateful that I did this because recovering my health is the best Christmas present ever!!! Happy holidays to all.

10-23-07  I am sleeping again-hooray!.  The medical supply company changed my CPAP to an 'auto' model, which automatically adjusts to the pressure I need.  It works great!  I'm feeling good-have lost 89#.  The challenge is avoiding carbs, my weakness.  However, the nut says I'm doing great with protein at meals, so I don't need to add protein supplements.  She is pleased with my progress.  My shortfall is that I haven't been doing all the calcium, so I need to work on that.  Life continues to be a journey in weightloss because it is ever present, but the results are so worth it.

The latest!

I haven't posted in awhile, must be getting lazey-NOT!  I'm 4 months out, feeling great, have lost 83#.  Am starting to incorporate exercise, including swimming, biking and walking.  It actually feels good and I want to do it!  That' s quite a change for me.  I feel so much healthier, I can't believe it.  The only issue currently is that I'm getting very tired and not sleeping well at night.  Am going to doctor today.  I think my CPAP for sleep apnea is set too high for me now that I have lost weight.  As a result, I breathe through my mouth at night, and am not feeling rested.  Hopefully this will be a simple solution.  I went to Swapkins a couple of weeks ago-what a great idea, and a place to meet so many wonderful people.  It was very nice to get some additions to my wardrobe, as people notice baggy clothes!

Update 8-27-07
on August 27, 2007 2:49 pm
I'm just over 2 months out and have lost 67 pounds.  After being on a plateau for about 3 weeks, I am again starting to lose.  Each day I make choices about food, and the temptations are always there, but sometimes they don't bother me at all.  I can go to bed each night knowing that I did my best that day, and that I will continue to lose the weight I need to.  My confidence has grown and I definitely feel healthier.  Right now my struggle is to increase exercise.  It's still too easy to talk myself out of it because I get fatigued easily, but I am committed to making this work.  It's a matter of learning to balance a demanding job, and home with teenage son and 90+ mother and 3 dogs.  Life is never boring at my house!
My son and I are going out of town this weekend and I know we will do lots of walking.  I may even get brave and swim in the hotel pool!  Like everyone else, I am so happy I made the decision for surgery and will continue to move forward in my life.

Update 7/16/07
on July 17, 2007 5:05 pm
Well, it's almost 1 month since surgery and I am down 51 lb.  Feeing good about that.  I'm still really tired every day, but some of that has to do with the stroke.  I won't go back to work for a couple more weeks.  Food is going well and I am trying new things every day within the guidelines.  I'm quickly learning what works for me.  I am going to shop some of the secondhand stores to pick up a few work clothes before my return to work.  This week is also my first visit to the surgeon since my surgery.  It will be interesting to hear their comments.

My Story

I am 54 years old, have been overweight all my life-chubby as a child, overweight in high school, moved into morbid obesity over time.  This year, (2007),  I woke up one morning and realized it was time to take care of me.  I've always been the caregiver-type of person.  In my twenties I married a man who was completely disabled, and of course was presented with many challenges. After ten years he left to marry someone else. I then met my soulmate, and we were married for eleven years.  He died suddenly of a heart condition in 2002.  Our son was eight at the time. Life has been a challenge for us but now, I have learned so much during this part of my life's journey.  I am now ready for the next journey, and that is my goal to be healthy and live a long life and to watch my son grow up.  I have jumped through all the hoops and begin the pre-op liquid diet on 6/6.  June 20 will be the beginning of my new celebration of life! I trust that God will help me through the journey and that all goes well.  I enjoy all the fabulous people on this website and have learned so much.  I look forward to continued and growing friendships from the people I meet.
