Surgeon TestimonialDavid Kim, M.D.I first met Dr. Kim at one of his monthly WLS seminars in November 2007. By the end of the seminar, I knew he was the one..... he was the physician that I wanted to entrust with my life and future well-being. I liked that he didn't push one type of surgery over another; instead - he went over a variety of surgical options and presented the facts about each. I had been on the fence between two procedures prior to the seminar and I walked away from it knowing two things - (1) physician choice and (2) surgery type.
Pam (Dr. Kim's bariatric coordinator) has been nothing short of AWESOME. Dr. Kim's PA, John, assisted with surgery and checked on me each day in the hospital after surgery - he comes across as a compassionate professional that genuinely cares about the patient.
Aftercare is emphasized prior to surgery and I look forward to attending the monthly support group meetings.
Overall, I would rate Dr. Kim a 10 out of 10 and his staff a 10 out of 10 as well. It's truly a team effort.
Bedside manner is the only area that I wished was different. I was attended to by several physicians and the nursing staff after surgery.... and while they were terrific, I kept hoping Dr. Kim would come by to check on me himself.
I believe surgical competence and bedside manner are both important, but if I had to choose one as better over the other, I'd go with surgical competence.

Hi - my name is Anne Marie and I've been having the time of my life lately. My RNY went very smoothly and I am full of hope and determination to get my health and life back. After nearly 20 years of self neglect... I'm learning to love myself again and have a renewed passion for life!
WL Journal - on January 26, 2008 11:17 pm
(4-25-08) It's been awhile since I've updated. I'm down a total of 53 lbs since my highest over the holidays. I'm exercising 6 out of 7 days a week - either walking about 3 miles or going to the gym to get 45 minutes of eliptical in. I have had no complications since surgery and have only thrown up (due to eating too fast), 3 times and had one bout of dumping (due to peanut butter on saltines). It's been easy to get frustrated when the scale doesn't budge much (plateaus), but I'm just staying the course and know my body is adjusting. The plateau always breaks and before I know it 5 more lbs are gone nearly overnight.
(2-21-08) Had post-op visit yesterday and the drain and staples were removed. It feels great to have the drain GONE, lol. Doc says to continue to walk, walk, walk..... and push protein. Next appointment is in one month, 3-26-08.
(2-14-08) Had my RNY surgery just four days ago, on 2-11. I was discharged from the hospital last night. All went well, actually the surgery and this recovery stage I'm in now are going much better than I ever imagined. It's been awsome seeing all my blood sugar readings in the normal range and my blood pressure in the good range, ALREADY!! I've been taken off all my diabetes meds. My stomach is sore, which is to be expected.... but it does get better every day. I feel best when I'm walking.
(2-9-08) Just 2 more days.... can't wait to get the surgery behind me and be on the other 'recovering/losing' side. I've been perfect on the liquid diet that I started back on Monday, 1-28, down about 14 lbs. Haven't been hungry at all. The first 3 days were a little hard, but not too bad... the worst part was the headache that accompanied. My pre-surgery BMI is 47.8.
(1-31-08) Had pre-op visit at hospital this morning - it went very smoothly. I've also completed 4 successful days on the liquid diet... just 11 more days till surgery!
(1-27-08) Okay, I am so ready for this! I usually shy away from full-body shots, but tonight had some 'before' pictures taken (front, side and back views). I knew I needed to get a lot of weight off - but goodness - I've been in denial even recently - guess I didn't realize I look as heavy as I do.
I begin the 2 week liquid diet tomorrow, it's a requirement my physician has for the 2 weeks prior to surgery.
(1-26-08) I'm impressed - paperwork was turned in to my insurance company on Thurs 1-24 and it was approved the very next day! I'm good to go for RNY surgery on Feb 11th. I begin the two-week liquid diet in 2 days.

My Story Entry 1-23-08:
I'm probably not unlike most folks that have struggled with their weight.... it's been a life-long struggle that dates back to 5th grade (around age 11). I turned 45 several months ago and began seriously looking in to WLS at that time. Enough is enough !! I'm sick and tired of struggling with the weight, unsuccessful weight loss attempts, and all that goes with it. I will soon have RNY surgery and while it scares me, I can not wait! I'm on the verge of taking control and regaining the life that I let escape me years ago.
Yes food tastes great.... But it seems as though I have spent the majority of my adult life living to eat instead of eating to live. My weight yo-yo'd up and down 'a little' for years (between age 11 and 28), but it began to spiral out of control in August 1991 when life dealt me a blow....
I was already about 60 lbs overweight when I fell & endured a tri-malleour left ankle fracture - the ankle dislocated and broke in 3 places (in August 1991). Reconstructive surgery was required. To make a long story short, 4 surgeries over 3 years. What an extremely depressing and painful time for me. Instead of adjusting (reducing food intake) due to no physical activity..... I found comfort in food and managed to put on another 60-70 lbs. I had been a jogger prior to the injury.... When I reflect back, I believe I simply gave up on life as I knew it, I figured the 'best part' of my life was over... after all, I could no longer wear heels and jogging as well as a lot of other activities (snow-skiing, tennis, bike riding, etc. ) didn't seem possible again.
That was then and life goes on and I figure the best is yet to come!! I count my blessings that I did recover, overcame the feelings of loss, and can walk well now, especially despite all the extra weight I've been carrying. When I discovered the eliptical machine at the gym - I found something I enjoyed that could replace the feeling that jogging use to give me. Most folks have no idea that I have a fused ankle because I walk close to normal now. The swelling and scars on both sides of my ankle give it away though, lol. Since then, I have yo-yo'd a little, ranging from 220 to 264 pounds. I've got a medium size frame at 5'1.
Several years ago, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes... I believe this disease set in because of the weight gain and lack of physical activity.
About 5 years ago I was extremely insulted when during a routine gyn exam my physician strongly 'suggested' that I have weight loss surgery. I never returned to that doc and decided that once again I better do something.... but once again I failed, and several times since, again. I know now that he was trying to help, but I had a closed-mind to WLS back then.
It has been a long journey for me to get to this point, but I now anxiously await surgery which is just a little over 2 weeks away. I've been happier than I can remember during the past several months as I have been going through the process to fulfill the requirements for insurance approval. I believe my surgery date will be like a new 'birth' day for me... I understand that RNY is a tool and it's going to take a lot of work on my part to achieve my goals, but for the first time, I actually 'believe' that I WILL be able to reach my goal. I can't wait !!
