Surgeon Testimonial

Jon R. Pirrello, Jr. M.D.
Had my first consult with Dr. Pirrello Mon, Jan 22. He has a great subtle wit, and spent a TON of time with us (hubby and I). Thrilled with dr and all the staff. Every single staff member was so pleasant and made you feel like a valued person. Loved the fact that as of my consult visit, they have had no deaths and very few complications. The video we watched was long, but very informative. The room was a little warm and since the lights were muted (for the video) it got a little drowsy. Nothing that being prepared won't fix, tho. They took a photo (a before shot) and I wish I had known that was going to happen so that I could make an informed choice on my dress. (Lucky for me I was dressed nicely, tho!) All in all, this seems like a perfect fit for me!

5/28/07 - I have now had two surgeries in one week by Dr. P (lap RNY wih Fobi band AND emergency hernia) and can say that I can't think of a soul I'd rather have operate on me. He is both professional and compassionate. DH found out that Dr. P not only does the bariatric surgery, but is on trauma surgery staff for the hospital, too, because he loves it. You have to admire a doc like that! I recommend Dr. P to anyone!

Friday is your day! Just remember you are on the journey of a lifetime. Try to enjoy every minute. It may sound weird now, but know that you are cared for and prayed for here, and all too soon this will be but a memory and you will be an inspiration to someone else. I am waiting for you on the losers' bench! ~ JudyAnne

Phenermine update
on July 3, 2008 7:39 pm
Oh man, what a difference!  Blood pressure and heart rate are fine and I am dropping weight at a really reasonable pace.  (I was 267 on May 19 and am 245 as of July 2!)  Even better, I am really exercising to gain muscle (which will increase my metabolism!)  Doing a lot of leg exercises in my sis's pool and at Bondi Beach, the new wave pool at Carowinds.  And using some 10 lb weights.  I am really happy with how things are going.

A year out

To be honest, I didn't exercise well at all in the second six months.  I followed the diet reasonably,  but not harshly.  And the result? . . .I only dropped about 20 lbs in six months.  Slow metabolism is a convenient excuse, but I do think it has something to do with it.  So . . .Dr. Jon put me on phentermine effective May 9, 2008.  I have a script for three months, and havt to get my niece to check my blood pressure each week.  I've been on it now a week and two days, and have dropped 9 lbs!  I can tell that my metabolism has picked up, I am doing so much better!  Onderland, here I come!

my six month check up and other things
on December 2, 2007 5:46 pm

Saw Dr. P on Nov 19.  My blood work was great, except for my white blood count and hemoglobin which were both slightly low, and my ferritin (sp?) which was high.  I need to see my blood doc (Dr. Taylor in Charlotte) to monitor the ferritin, and I'll make that appointment during the holidays.  I have been feeling really good till today.  I had a serious bout of diarrhea and intestinal cramping, it's been going for about three hours (the cramping, not the diarrhea).  I think it may be an intestinal flu.  If I'm not better tomorrow, I'll call Dr. P's office.
When I saw him at the office, he recommended I start monitoring calories - keeping it at 1000-1200.  Not too hard to do, so I am doing that.

Went to DH's in-laws for Thanksgiving and had a rockin good time.  I love my inlaws!

Will blog more later.

blogging, not my big thing!
on November 17, 2007 7:14 pm
Well poop!  I forget to blog (can ya tell?  it's been four months!!!!)  sorry!
The journey goes well.  I have my six month appt with Dr. P on Monday.  Had my bloodwork done a week ago Friday during an appt with Dr. Larsen (my PCP).  I spoke with him about my water retention.  He said that taking the Prempro could easily be making me hold water, and other PMS symptoms (which haven't happened in several years!)  I had already started reducing the amount of Prempro and I think it's making a difference.
I'm not losing as fast as I had hoped, but still losing.  (After all, I AM down more than 100 lbs since Feb 20 - nine months - not bad!)  I think I'm going to be a slow long time loser - taking at least 18 months to get to my correct weight.  We'll see!

long time no type!

Well . . .no excuse, I just forget to blog!
At this point (8.5 weeks out) I am cleared to try and eat any meat source.  This Friday I add fruits and veggies.  (I want a salad!)  So far chicken is not as easy for me as London Broil!  My nephew is an amazing chef, and he cooks this wonderful London Broil on the grill (Does that make it a Londond Grill?)  I can cut it into tiny pieces and chew it well, and it sits beautifully.  I am also really fond of Luisianne decaf tea with splenda and 1% milk.  And I have started drinking my water warm.  I run the hot water at the faucet and add my Walmart mix (love the early morning one) and my Benefiber.  Is working great so far.

Will blog more later.  Really.

My Story

Ah, yes, my story.  As with many morbidly obese individuals, I have always been large.  I first remember realizing it in early elementary when we had to shop at Sear’s Chubby Girl section, and my clothes still always felt tight.  Round is a shape I have never cared for, and so didn’t like my first name, since the “R”, the “o” and the “b” were all round, reminding me that I was fat.

As my mother and father also were over weight, our meals were never fried, and Fleischman’s margarine was a staple in the house.  But since there were five children our meals were often largely carbohydrates with minimal protein.

I've been on the diet and exercise yo-yo for two thirds of my life.  Jr hi was the Canadian Air Force exercise booklet and our family doctor supervised 1200 calories diet.  College included disco dancing and walking the campus for exercise and visits to a doctor who would monitor your weight every ten days, and give you amphetamines to help with the weight loss. Got a lot of stuff done, and dropped weight fast, but then, Thanksgiving! Post college, the doctor supervised B-12 clinic, Middle Eastern dance as exercise, another round of 1200 calorie diet, and on and on.  Then . . . years of just giving up.  Nothing worked, and I was tired of trying.  At one point, my niece lost a lot of weight by giving up all sweets, so I tried that.  Again, a few pounds, but it didn’t continue.

In August of 2000, almost on a whim, I decided I would try Atkins.  My dad had been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes and I wanted to reduce the carb exposure my body got.   I went down to less than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day for several weeks, and then kept it below 40 (with a random “binge” of 80-100 grams once a month or so).  It worked!!!  I lost 49 pounds, and when I got my blood pressure checked, it was normal!  I have not been on blood pressure medication since, even when I regained some weight.   I have continued to control my carbs, and expect to for the rest of my life.  This is not a diet, but a life change.  I can tell when I have more carbs than I should.  I retain water and can get quite, um, temperamental (yeah, that's the word! LOL) if I am not careful.

When my loss started slowing, I added exercise.  Canadian Air Force booklet on line! (Ah the technology age!). Joined the Y and I worked out hard on the treadmill for quite a few months.  Some loss, but nothing like what I need.

In January 2006, I started on the Trim Body system, limiting carb and calorie intake, and using a specific exercise regimen. I dropped a surprising 35 pounds in the 6 months I was on it.  And loved the exercise routine.  But had various breathing issues and stopped.

Due to the breathing issues, my PCP referred me to my pulmonologist who had diagnosed me with sarcoidosis (now in remission) 13 years earlier.  Ended up getting diagnosed with mild sleep apnea and anxiety.  Got put on Zoloft (which they use for apnea now!) and he strongly recommended I consider WLS. So far, the only common co-morbidity I have is the mild apnea, but according to Dr. Spangenthal (my pulmonologist), both my blood sugar and blood pressure are inching toward a real diagnosis.

I started exploring the idea of WLS then, and went to one local seminar.  Researched my insurance (BC/BS of Illinois) and found that they changed the policy in August/Sept 2006 from requiring 12 consecutive dr monitored weight loss months, to only 6.  And that they allow Jennie Craig or Weight Watchers as the program, as long as a dr. monitors you. So I began WW and just love with the group and the leader.  Hasn't been real effective in terms of weight loss, but it does provide accountability, and has given me ideas for exercise (going to the FARTHER bathroom at work, etc.)

My six month of WW is Feb, and by then all my required pre-surg appointments (psych, physical, pap, mammogram, nut, blood work) will be done.  So then, we hope to rock and roll!

I am 48 and have been married 23 1/2 years to an AWESOME guy, my hero!  We share a home (we're in the in-law appt) with my neice, nephew, and their five kids (9, 6 1/2, 2 1/2, and twins 111/2).  I call them my "rent to own" family, close enough, but since we have separate space, it's not too close!  I'm a lawyer, and work with an ins company.

Currently going thru the frenetic "getting all the appointnments in"
