Hear of a Champion 5k

Jun 21, 2007

Ran the hardest 5k yet.  It was a charity event for a high school freshmen who was diagnosed in January with leukemia, and developed sepstis upon entering the hospital.  There were 750 people registered for the event which is pretty amazing for a Thursday night.
Started out bad when I had to return to the house 5 minutes after leaving for the race because my stomach (?) obviously did not agree with the quick dinner which I consumed.
The race started right on time at 6:45pm but everyone got directed the wrong way and added an extra 1/2 mile to the race.  On top of that my ipod was out of juice from the start of the race.   I actually did the first 1 1/2 miles at a fairly quick pace, and I was keeping pace with a few of my friends.  But as we crossed the bridge to head back to the starting point, a 12 year old decided to stop suddenly in front of me, and it forced me to stop and restart.  My legs didn't recover for another 200 yards.  Just in time for a massive 1 mile uphill climb.  It was tough.  Out of breath, in need of hydration I really struggled to the top of the hill.  The last 1/2 mile I recovered and got real strong passing about 50 people in the final 400 yards.  But my time of 31 minutes was the slowest of the season.  I need to really work on hills.

Starting to steer away from Support Groups

Jun 16, 2007

I have finally decided to starting cutting back on the four Suport Groups a month.  I am not happy with the way the meetings proceed, and the audience tends to feed on supporting their bad habits instead of enforcing the rules that the surgeons and nutritionists have recommeded.

Miles for Molly

Jun 16, 2007

Today I ran a 5k in downtown Wilmington, "Miles for Molly".  Got there at 8:30am.  There were about 500 people in attendance.  The police closed off Union Street to all car traffic, and the gun sounded at 9am.  I started out and immediately saw 200 butts in front of me.  Since I had surveyed the course I knew that the first 1 1/2 miles was going to be uphill, but what I didn't know was that the first 400 meters was really a real killer hill.   The temperature was 80 and I arrived at the half way point in good time.  Took the turn, increased my speed and took the next mile quickly.  At the end, I could see the time just going over the 29 minute mark, so I hustled in at  29 minutes and 21 seconds.  First time for me to break 30 minutes. I finished 167th.
