Last night I decided to forego going to the gym since I felt like going out for a short run. When I got to my first turn-off I decided to run a little farther. I committed to an extra couple of miles. I ran for just under 90 minutes. It was my longest run to date. When I finished up at the house, I felt like I still had some gas in the engine. Felt good today, no soreness at all.
Now I'm pumped to keep training for a 10k later this year. Who know's? Ceasar Rodney half-marathon next March?
Well I did it. The temperature was 93 degrees and humidity 49%. After spending an hour at the dentist getting a bridge I trucked on over to the race to pick up my number and registration material. They had a lot of giveaways at this event, a bag, t-shirt, lots of melted powerbars, etc. Since I had an hour to kill I guzzled water to stay hydrated. The hot and sticky weather kept my legs stiff and gimpy.
Once my friend Susan showed up time passed a lot quicker. Over a 1,000 people showed up for the start. Susan and I paced each other for the first mile (7:50 mile), which was much too fast for me. I pooped out at the 3k marker and slowed my pace considerable. For the first time running, I actually grabbed some water and threw in the general direction of my face. I hit the two mile mark and thought that I could throttle up for the last mile, but nothing happened. I finally accelerated at the last 500 meters and was able to cross the finish line at 28:30. Not my best, but considering the humidity and heat I'll take it. I did finish 25th of the over 50 crowd so I got an AARP bag filled with goodies. Need to work on pace and getting that 2nd mile more consistent.
Another 5k notched down at the Riverfront. This one started at Iron Hill Brewery. This one started out real cold for summer [64 degrees, sunshine, 60% humidity]. There were about 250 people in attendance. They started us off at 8:45am and after picking my way around 50-60 walkers I got settled in at a good pace. Around 1 mile, I found a loaded wallet with lots of $$$. I picked it up without breaking stride, to drop off with one of the police officers at the next intersection, but this guy wearing a fanny pack told me he had lost it so I handed it over. He looked honest enough.....
Got back on track and rounded the 2 mile mark up along the Riverfront. Wasn't sure of my pace but decided not to bother checking my Nike+ time on my Nano and just run. As I rounded Frawley stadium I could just barely make out the timer clock and I realized that I had a good opportunity to break 28 minutes so I started sprinting (all right a fast run). As I passed over the finish line the clock read 27:58 so I was pretty excited, but I also know that they sometimes tack on extra seconds. After checking the results I found out that I came in officially at 28:00 minutes flat. Still my best time ever. All in all a very good run. They had B-Q in the brewery after the race but I didn't attend because I needed to run errands since this is my daughter's last weekend before she heads off to college.
