My name is Rebecca. I am 24 years old and hoping to have bariatric surgery. I have already done lots of research on my own and have gone to the informational seminar. I turned in my paperwork about a week ago and am waiting to hear back and schedule an appointment with my surgeon. Now that I've made the decision to have surgery I'm finding it hard to wait on all the appointments and approvals etc. I'm in a somewhat unique situation because I work in surgery as a Surgical Tech, so I have assisted on many Roux-En-Y procedures and a few Lap-Bands. Also, I work closely with the bariatric surgeons each week. I have already spoken to one of the surgeons about my situation and been told that I should qualify for surgery. But of course I still have to go through the process like everyone else and I'm SO impatient! I signed up on ObesityHelp to connect with others who have had surgery and those planning to have surgery so that we can share experiences. My family and friends are supportive, but I still don't think anyone can understand unless they've gone through the same thing.

Nutritionist Appointment
on June 4, 2007 12:51 pm
I had my appointment with the nutritionist today. It wasn't the same nutritionist who usually does the evaluations for bariatric patients, and she didn't really seem into it. Other than that it went okay. It's the last thing I had to do for insurance. Once she writes up her letter and gives it to my surgeon's office, they are going to submit all my information to my insurance company. I'm excited to finally be to this point, but it still feels like it's never going to happen. I hope I don't run into any snags with insurance.

I had my Consult Today!
on May 7, 2007 2:48 pm

Today was my consult with Dr. Dunshee. I already knew him because I work with him in surgery, but I hadn't gotten a chance to tell him I had an appointment with him. I was a little nervous that he wouldn't recognize me in street clothes, but he did. The consult went great, and Dr. Dunshee thinks I'll be a good candidate for surgery. We went over the signs of sleep apnea and decided that I don't need to do a sleep study, so that's one less thing to worry about.
So now it's off to my insurance company for approval. They're probably going to want me to see the nutritionist before they'll approve me. Unfortunately, the nutritionist I had an appointment with got put on bed rest and they cancelled my appointment. They're having to divide her cancelled appointments among the other dieticians, and the earliest they can get me in is June 4th. So that's a little frustrating, but even if I can't get approval until then it will be okay because I can't get off work for surgery until the middle of August. So I've got enough time. I would just be more comfortable having everything done.
The most important thing though is that I've been approved by my surgeon and things are still moving along. And so far it looks like the timeline I have in my head should work out.

*Sigh*

I'm supposed to have my meeting with my surgeon and also an appointment with the nutritionist on May 3rd, but we have a new policy at work for getting time off, and it looks like I'm not going to be able to get off. It's frustrating because with the old policy, I would've been able to get off. The surgeon's appointment can be rescheduled for the 7th (which I have off.) But the nutritionist doesn't have another opening until the 23rd!!! I'm going to keep trying to find somebody to cover my shift for a little bit so that I can at least make it to the nutritionist. I'm just frustrated. It's like I would have been better off not looking for anybody to cover my shift and just calliing in on that day. Oh well.

Moving Right Along...
on April 23, 2007 8:49 am
I got a call this morning from the lady who schedules appointments for the bariatric surgeons! My appointment will be on May 3. She said that my insurance takes about a month to grant approval after getting all the info they need. And after insurance approval it's usually about a month wait for the actual surgical date. So I'm looking at about 3 months until my surgery! I also need to schedule an appointment with a dietician. Oh, and my psych eval is today, so I'll get to find out whether I'm nuts or not. Haha. :-) I'm so excited!
Also, yesterday I told my best friend about what I'm planning to do, and she was SO supportive!! That was really great for me because I wasn't sure if she would understand, but she reacted really well. :-)
