My ex husband came by to bring my kids something for dinner (Taco Bell), per my daughters request. When my daughter came back into the house, she set the food on the counter and started sobbing. Our dog that was 14 years old had passed away two weeks ago... and he just told her! It was only about 2 weeks ago that I asked him how our dog was doing. My heart feels heavy, my kids have been crying off and on all evening.
One of the very few things my ex did for us, was care for our dog when we moved. I was so heartbroken when I had to leave Chrissy behind, as I feared that he would end up taking her to the dog pound or something. But as it turns out, he had been taking pretty good care of her. He said that he had taken her to the vet and got her some pills. The next morning he found her dead, in her bed, underneath the porch. I knew in my heart this day was coming soon, as Chrissy wasn't doing well. She had arthritis, was deaf, and her eyesight wasn't as keen as it once was.
Today I'm thankful.... for the years that me and my kids had with her. The joy she brought to our hearts... all the times she would lay on her back with her feet in the air while she let our ducks groom her (was the cutest thing in the world). She protected our house and property for many years.... She loved to fetch, she was gentle with my children, and never nipped or bit anyone.
When I first got Chrissy as a puppy, I promised her she would have a forever home. We kept that promise to her, and in turn she loved us unconditionally.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
