Surgeon Testimonial

Fernando Otero, M.D., F.A.C.S
My first impression of Dr Otero, is that he really does want me to succeed and knows what he is doing. Over time, my impression grew stronger and I liked him more. His office staff is amazing. Anne Timberlake who is in charge of the program at John Muir is amazing, simply the best. The whole program is very thorough and complete which made me feel comfortable.
I would definitely rate him as a top laprascopic surgeon. He does a lot of these each year. He was one of the founding laprascopic surgeons in California. He is really an amazing Dr!

Switched Surgeries
on December 31, 2010 11:55 am
Oh, and I switched the surgeries... I was going to get the Sleeve and ended up getting gastric bypass. I switched for multiple reasons:

1) I thought I could get pregnant faster after the Sleeve... nope, they are both two years post op.
2) I thought it would be better for my GERD.... it is worse.
3) I thought it would be "easier"... nope, i would have to work out way much more.
And honestly, like why wouldn't I want what's easiest??

So PS. I switched :)

3 Days Post Op
on December 31, 2010 11:37 am
So I DID IT!!!! I had my surgery this last Tuesday! I really still cannot believe I did this! I am so excited... for all the stuff AFTER this part of it!

So day 1-surgery day- I was there nice and early. I didn't really, really start getting super nervous until my family left me and I went with the anesthesiologist. After that I was way nervous.. but sleeping soon. Next thing I know, I was out of surgery, in recovery and sleeping. Then after that I was in my room, with my family around me. I was pretty miserable that first day. When I opened my eyes, I wanted to vomit. In fact, every time I sat up, I vomitted. In the beginning, I think it was due to the anesthesia but after that wore off, I know if was due to the pain meds. I couldn't take an oral pain meds because it made me vomit, so I took Dilaudid, the IV pain meds, whcih made me sick adn vomit and then in turn hurt more... so needless to say, that first day was MISERABLE.
Honestly, I was totally doubting why I did the surgery? wondering if it was going to be like this forever? Wondering when I would be normal??!?!
I did stay the night at the hospital, which was expected, but had little sleep. I had nurses coming in every few hours and it hurt to turn on side and back. So it was a long night and I was tired. Did I mention they make you walk like asap??!? lol

Day 2-MUCH MUCH better! I only stayed 1 night in the hospital, thank God. The second day I was feeling much better and having some energy coming back. I was taking good walks, burping, but now gas movement (which sounds gross but is kinda big deal lol), and sipping my food fine.  I don't really remember a whole lot of the second day other than I hung out at the hospital. lol. I got to go home this evening though and was greeted by some family! The drive home was rough even in my nice car... it was bumppppy. lol.

Day 3-My first day at home was pretty good, my energy level was still coming up. I was sent home with some liquid vicodin. I was excited because that first day I only took 10ml when I was supposed to take 30ML. So I was way under my pain meds, thank God. My pain was minimal, I had some at the incision site but minimal, the most was just sore from trying to do everything..

Day 4/NYE- Happy New YearS!! What a better New Years Eve gift to myself than a healthy, skinnier, future!! HELLLLO 2011!!! I cannot wait for everything that is to come through this new year! As far as new years eve plans/parties.. it consists of possibly stopping by a friends house for just hanging out and watching movies at home. Lol. Which is fine, I'm really not a partier or anything really anyway. Not to mention, I'll have my health so that's all that matters!!

So I can honestly say that if someone is debating or thinking about this... DO IT. Make sure it is what you want to do!!! and do it. ya know? I'm so excited and I will take the good with the bad!

I'M APPROVED!!
on October 10, 2010 6:52 pm
HOLLAR!!! I  am approved for my Sleeve Surgery!! I am SO EXCITED! This is really unbelievable. I mean by the end of the year, I Samantha, will be well on my way to living a healthy lifestyle.

So tomorrow is my endoscopy (and my Daniel Fast starts for 10 days lol).. So since I finally know that I am going to be getting the surgery (probably like mid November but I will let you know ASAP)... I'm going to go through the list of things that are going to change after surgery, and start them all tomorrow so that way after the surgery it won't be too much of a culture shock.

How did you guys prepare for the surgery????

My Story

Hi There!!!
My name is Samantha and here is a little bit of info about me and my journey thus far! I am recently married, we just celebrated our one year anniversary in August!! I absolutely love my husband. We have no kids yet, but are planning for them eventually! I am a 22 year old college student who is finishing up pre requisites for Nursing. I would like to be a Pediatric Nurse soon. I also work as a Medical Assistant for about three years now. I love my job and am super excited to begin a career in the medical field. I also am a youth group director at my church. I absolutely love my youth and being a positive role model for them.

So obviously my life is busy, but who's isn't nowadays?! As far as my weight goes, I feel like I've tried many many many different strategies to loose the weight, but I always end up gaining it back. I love working out, but it is currently painful to do so. I am so excited to be getting the Route en Y bypass surgery. I know that is is not the "easy way out" like most people think, but instead it is a toold that is going to help me loose the weight and keep it off for good!!!

As most of you can relate, here are some things I am soo soo excited for: I cannot wait to be healthy!! That is my first and foremost priority. I cannot wait to vacation with my husabnd and not feel self concscious. I can't wait to have children and be a healthy role model for them! or to shop in normal clothes stores, or to feel my age again!! (I feel like I'm 50 years old sometimes!) And all of the other improvements that will come with this surgery!!

With the Lord, my family, my friends, and you guys!! I am excited to take on this journey!!!!
