Surgeon Testimonial

David Podkameni M.D.
My first impression of Dr Podkameni was that he was very knowledgable & experienced. Over time, I found him to be strict but communicated very welll with me, and I could even joke with him some. Some members of his staff have had bariatric surgery (nurses & the dietician, Donna) so they know what they are talking about because they have lived it.

I found it odd that he didn't care about taking labs since it was June when I had pre op labs but my surgery didn't happen until November. Also, I found him to be overly structured and strict at times, but I am a person who likes to test limits...lol

There is a lot of support with the Banner Gateway Bariatric program, ranging from pre op to post op support groups. They even have a clothing exchange program!

The thing that I am most impressed with Dr P is that he is thorough, methodical, and careful with his patients. During my surgery, he found a benign tumor on my liver, and repaired a hiatal hernia I didn't even know I had! Afterwards, when I had some nausea, dry heaves, and a bad rebound headache (probably from the pain meds), he gave a combination of meds thru the IV that took care of all three problems. That made the difference in me having to stay an extra day or not. (I got to go home as scheduled.)

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
I felt like I was weak and couldn't lose weight because I wasn't disciplined enough. I had accepted that I would be a "big girl" for the rest of my life. It took several years to get there but I never felt picked on...just didn't have any energy...and I don't think I realized how much more I was eating than "normal" people. I always felt hungry...

Bah Humbug!
on July 27, 2010 6:50 am
Okay, so I have a really bad attitude at the moment, waiting around for limbo to stop.  I am exercising pretty well but I actually gained 5 pounds!  I keep the food log and I haven't been eating any differently.  I am hoping this is a case of "muscle weighs more than fat" because I can tell the muscle is there.  I go on next Monday to get my blood drawn; hopefully my doc will give me the okay for the surgery, then all be into the insurance.  It is hard being on OH right now seeing people getting approved & having surgery, etc.  I am so ready to take my seat on the loser's bench!

Time isn't flying by...
on July 18, 2010 9:17 pm
I continue to exercise and I celebrated my 22nd anniversary with my hubby, Mark, last Friday.  I have days where I am watching closely what I eat and other days where I end up eating something I shouldn't.  In the end though, I end up paying for my food wrongdoings because then my stomach & intestined act up, so I am learning from pain about what I shouldn't be doing!  I can't wait until the end of this month, when I get my thyroid blood test done & hopefully will get my PCP to sign off on my sleeve surgery... I wish things went a little faster but I am trying to be patient...

Adjusting & Exercising
on July 9, 2010 5:03 pm
After one week on Synthroid, I gotta say I am feeling more energy and my skin is looking normal (instead of dry & flaky).  I have been continuing to swim laps and do my pool exercises almost daily, and I think I have more muscle underneath all this girth!  I think I understand now why my gall bladder surgery took so long to recuperate from (7 weeks ago today)... I somehow had this thyroid thing happen and that's why I had so many setbacks.  Anyway, now I am just wishing July would fly by so I can get back on track for my sleeve!  August 1st can't come soon enough!

A 4 week setback...
on July 3, 2010 11:46 pm

My medical testing revealed an unexpected result...My thyroid measurements were off and I have now started Synthoid for my newly diagnosed hypothyroidism.  My PCP says that once my labs come back normal, she will clear me for my sleeve surgery.  While I was frustrated about the whole thing, I know things will happen when they are supposed to... So I am keeping in good spirits!
