Surgeon Testimonial

David Podkameni M.D.
My first impression of Dr Podkameni was that he was very knowledgable & experienced. Over time, I found him to be strict but communicated very welll with me, and I could even joke with him some. Some members of his staff have had bariatric surgery (nurses & the dietician, Donna) so they know what they are talking about because they have lived it.

I found it odd that he didn't care about taking labs since it was June when I had pre op labs but my surgery didn't happen until November. Also, I found him to be overly structured and strict at times, but I am a person who likes to test limits...lol

There is a lot of support with the Banner Gateway Bariatric program, ranging from pre op to post op support groups. They even have a clothing exchange program!

The thing that I am most impressed with Dr P is that he is thorough, methodical, and careful with his patients. During my surgery, he found a benign tumor on my liver, and repaired a hiatal hernia I didn't even know I had! Afterwards, when I had some nausea, dry heaves, and a bad rebound headache (probably from the pain meds), he gave a combination of meds thru the IV that took care of all three problems. That made the difference in me having to stay an extra day or not. (I got to go home as scheduled.)

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
I felt like I was weak and couldn't lose weight because I wasn't disciplined enough. I had accepted that I would be a "big girl" for the rest of my life. It took several years to get there but I never felt picked on...just didn't have any energy...and I don't think I realized how much more I was eating than "normal" people. I always felt hungry...

French Vanilla Protein Pudding & Protein Creamy Soup recipes
posted on 11/28/10 5:29 pm
Yesterday, I made my own protein pudding and it was really good!  So here it is...along with another!

French Vanilla Protein Pudding

1 box - sugar free French Vanilla pudding mix
1 - 6 oz container of Kroger CarbMaster Vanilla yogurt
1 scoop of NOW unflavored protein powder (I bought at Netrition.com but you can get from Amazon.com & other places)(1 scoop has 25 g protein, 105 calories, and 1 carb) (you can use your favorite vanilla protein powder)
10 oz water

Mix the protein powder with water first and let rest for 5 minutes.  Pour yogurt in a mixing bowl and slowly add protein water, stirring with a whisk.  Add pudding mix.  Mix well for 2 minutes using mixer or whisk.  Pour in 1/2 cup containers.  You should get 4 servings (each 1/2 cup).  75 calories, 9 grams protein, 9 carbs. (Your numbers may be different with different protein powders, etc)

Protein Cream Soup

1 - 10.5 oz can of Cream soup (such as Campbell's Cream of Chicken soup)
9.5 oz water
1 scoop of NOW unflavored protein powder (I bought at Netrition.com but you can get from Amazon.com & other places)(1 scoop has 25 g protein, 105 calories, and 1 carb) (you can use your favorite unflavored or chicken  flavored protein powder)
4 oz of pureed chicken (with gravy or water) (can substitute turkey with gravy or water) (OPTIONAL)
Add seasonings such as Roasted Chicken seasoning, parsley, tarragon, thyme, etc - TO TASTE

Mix the protein powder with water first and let rest for 5 minutes.  Pour canned soup in pan or microwaveable container and slowly add protein water, mixing with whisk.  Add pureed chicken or turkey (OPTIONAL).  Heat to 130 degrees or to taste - but do not boil (as this will ruin the whey protein).  For each 4 oz serving you get a minimum of 6 grams of protein (depending on what soup & protein you use & if you use the meat puree), 5 grams or less of carbs, and about 55 calories.

Suggestions :  Use Cream of Mushroom soup & Beef Consomme together with 9 oz water (with scoop of unfl. prot powder)

The soup can be drunk in 8 oz servings which will double your protein and also counts toward your liquids.  Hope these couple of recipes help you come up with versions that work for you!  Take Care, my peeps!
