X-MAS DAY 2007
on December 25, 2007 9:15 pm

3 months since I had my vsg, and life is good.  I have lost around 23kgs and am feeling better than I have in many years. The surgery went well.  My surgeon warned me that it may be more complicated than normal because of my previous lap-band surgeries.  I woke up feeling like a mac truck had parked on me!!!  I had a naso-gastric tube in my nose and throat and it was possibly the worst experience of my life (yuk, yuk, yuk).. My surgeon came in and let me know that the surgery ended up being fairly major, he found sutchers left in my stomache from the lap band, a fair bit of scar tissue from the band and had to separate a number of areas where my intestines had adhered to my liver!! but despite all this he felt the vsg had gone well but wanted the naso-gastric tube in to keep the new pouch as empty as possible for a couple of days.  this was probably the hardest part of the surgery, after the second day I broke down and cried and begged him to remove it and luckily he agreed.  Once it was out my recovery went ahead in leaps and bounds.  then on my fourth day in hospital (1 was in for a week)  I got up to go to the toilet and one of the drains in my abdominal cavity (I had 2) flicked up and hit my diaphram, OMG the agony.  This lasted for 24hrs until my doc was ready to remove the first drain,  man was I glad to have that drain removed!!!! the pain was gone instantly and I felt normal again. On day 6 the iv and the final drain were removed and I just sat back and relaxed for another 24 hrs until they felt I could go home.  Despite all this, it was only 1 week out of my life and the end results so far have been fantastic.  I feel so much better than I have in years and all of my weight related health problems have disappeared, every last one of them!!!  I would do it all again in a minute if I had to.  I now eat like a "normal" person and can control my eating with out any heartache at all.  I have struggled for control of my weight and eating issues for almost my whole life and  finally I have it.  Thank god for giving me the strength to go through with this surgery.  It has truly freed me and given me my life back.  I still have 15 kg to lose to be at goal, but I knowI can do it, it WILL happen.  I don't go to sleep and dream of being thin every night anymore and wake up crying.  Its really happening, I no longer loathe myself.  I am me and I am free.

My Story

Hi Guys, well my story is a long and convoluted one I guess, I had a lap-band inserted in 2001 at 110kg, it worked great and I lost 25kg in about 5 months (apart from an initial choking feeling when I came out of the general anas.) At the 12 month mark I was only 3 kg from my goal weight and feeling great, the diabetes, liver and joint problems had gone and I could get around like a normal person again. Long story short - the band slipped and had to be removed and a new one put in (including the port). 1 Month after the new band went in and 10kg lighter (I had re-gained 12 kg in the down time) I started to have some pain around the port area, the GP said he could see nothing wrong and rang my Surgeon, who said I had probably torn one of the stitched from the muscle and prescribed anti-inflammatories. Two days later I was unable to stand and was rushed to a distant hospital (we lived in the country at the time). My surgeon was unable to the operation for 2 days and when he finally went in to remove the band there was a fist sized abcess under the port (yucckkky). Needless to say this experience put me off all WLS for a number of years but now back at my previous weight and suffering with all the old problems and some new ones to boot, I have taken the plunge and decided to go ahead with a VSG (no foreign objects to get infected!!!). I have to say that I am terrified, but I want to live a long and productive life and I have a responsibility to be around for my children. So thats it I guess, a new chapter is about to begin and I know that its going to be the best yet
