Surgeon Testimonial

Ralph Crum, M.D.
My first impression of Dr. Crum was one of curiousity. He is from way up north and I thought he seems a bit stand offish and in a big hurry.

But I found that was because he was giving a presentation on wls and was all facts and figures.

When I met him at my first appointment, he was so personable and relaxed and really listened to what I was saying. I really got the feeling he was interested in me and my view of wls and my expectations. He argued with me regarding the DS surgery, I think to make sure I had done my homework. The RNY is his speciality. But I insisted the DS was the right surgery for me. And after asking me several questions, he agreed to perform the DS surgery.

Another thing he does is he makes his support group meetings manditory because he want you to succeed.

He is doing a reversal of my VBG and giving me a DS on 11/01/06. I can't wait.

Congratulations on taking this huge step in your journey and becoming an official member of the "fellowship of the switch." We hope that your surgery and recovery are swift, smooth, and uneventful. It is an interesting experience and certainly not "the easy way out" of being unhealthy and obese but each day will get a little better and be further proof that you dared to dream and had the courage to act. Good luck and God bless!

April and Where did the Time Go?
on April 26, 2007 8:47 am
Wow, where did the time go? It has almost been 6 months since my surgery. I am down about 66 pounds, knocking on the Onderland door and doing pretty good.

I got my lab work done this Monday and received the results today. I've been taking B12 everyday, and now it is too high. It is 1017 and the range is 180-914. BT told me we didn't really need to take it and I did believe her but taking it seem to give me a boost of sorts. I'm going to cut down to 2 tablets a week, I think and see how that affects my next labs.

My potassium was low at 3.0 with a range of 3.6 to 5.0 as normal. So the doctor gave me a prescription and told me if I was going to eat friut, it better be a banana.

My protein was normal but low at 6.5 with a normal range of 6.0 to 8.8. I told the doctor I was eating more than 100 grams of protein a day and he said it just wasn't going to be enough. He said to add a protein shake a day. I haven't been drinking shakes for about a month, because I was able to get so much protein from food. But it seems my body needs more protein.

My iron was normal but at the low end at 48 with a normal range of 40 to 150. Dr. Crum said to change to a multi with iron. Yuck. Iron seems to upset my tummy, so I'll have to experiment a bit, I think, to find one I can tolerate.

My LDL was low at 42 with a normal range of 98 to 192. I'm not sure how to increase this. Might look into fish oil tablets. I don't know.

My Prealbumin was low at 16.4 with a normal range of 18 to 45. This is my iron, the doctor said. And alot of my CBC had low levels and the doctor said that iron was the contributing factor.

My vitamin A was normal but low at 38 with a normal range of 38 to 106. My doc didn't say anything about this but I think I will add another ADEK to the mix.

My vitamin D and my zinc are pending so I don't have those results yet. I've been trying to get about 30 minutes outside a day to help with the vitamin D.

The good news was that my Cholesterol was 104 (100-200), my Triglyceride is 36 (0-150), HDL is 51 (28-89), Calcium is 9.4 (8.5-10.2). And I was down 66 pounds. Might not be the fast weight loss but I am losing consistantly.

Both my RNY buddies have caught up with me or past me in the weight loss race. And I congratulate them. But I am happy as a clam with my decision, my food choices, my labs and my weight loss.
