My name is Marla, and I live in the Des Moines, IA area. I grew up in IL and lived just outside of St. Louis, MO for all of my life, until December 2004 when my husband's job moved us to Iowa. I have 3 lovely children - Allie, 7; Justin, 2; and Jason, 1. I love my life in Iowa, but I do miss our families back in IL.
I am looking forward to this journey of weight loss surgery with the Lap Band. I want to have a long, healthy life with my husband and children!
On My Way to Weight Loss! on October 23, 2007 8:02 pm
On October 15th I had my first post-surgery check up. From Oct 3rd to Oct 15th I had lost 10 pounds. From Aug 30 (the date when I set my surgery) to Oct 15th, I have lost a total of 18 pounds. My next check up is Oct 25th.
So far everything is going well. I have recovered nicely from surgery. One incision is taking its own sweet time to heal, but my family doc said that it is looking good.
I have noticed that eat less food at a sitting. I still myself having cravings for certain things, especially sweets. At least I'm not eating the amount that I used to when I give in to the cravings. That makes me feel good.

Surgery - Oct 8, 2007 on October 9, 2007 8:31 am
I had my surgery on Monday, Oct 8, 2007. Everything went very well. I checked into the hopsital at 8:00, and I was in the OR by 11:00. My surgeon completed the surgery in 30 minutes. I spent about an hour and a half in the recovery room, and then about 3 hours in a post-op room. I had an x-ray done to make sure that fluid was passing thru the band. After that, the nurse gave me my prescriptions and I was on my way home at 4:10. My surgeon checked on me pre-op and post-op, and was very happy that he did so.
All of my incisions are at the top of my tummy. For some reason, I thought they would all be down the sides of my tummy. They gave me so much anti-nausea medication, there was no way that I was going to be nauseous. They gave me some med thru my IV, a patch behind my ear, they were supposed to push another vial of the liquid med thru my IV in the OR, and then they sent me home with a prescription for an anti-nausea med. I have not felt sick at all, and I think this helped. I also have not had any problems with gas. The surgeon must have done a great job of pushing the excess out.
The pain was not as bad as I thought it would be. The pain in concentrated in the incision area. I'm still taking some Percocet this morning. Standing up and sitting down are painful, but that should subside in a day or two (I hope!).
I'm eating s/f popsicles and drinking plenty of water. I'm going to try some broth today, and then tomorrow I can move on to soft, liquidy type foods - yogurt, cream of wheat, s/f pudding, etc.
Here's to the beginning of a new chapter in my life!

Almost Surgery Time on September 30, 2007 12:33 pm
Well, I have been on on my two week pre-op diet. Luckily my surgeon believes in letting his patients eat food for these two weeks! I have been restricted to a 1200 calorie/day diet. I have done well. I weight myself on Friday, 9/28, and I had lost 4 pounds during the work week. This week I planning to substitute some meals with protein shakes, in hopes of losing more than 4 pounds this week. The two days before surgery will be liquids, so I should lose a pound or two then!
I am looking forward to the surgery. I'm not scared. Just a bit nervous, but I was just a bit nervous before my two planned c-sections. Once I'm in the OR, I usually relax. Once I'm under the night-night medicine, all my cares will be gone, until I wake up in recovery. I am just anxiously awaiting for the hopsital to call me and let me know what time my surgery is scheduled, and what time to check in at the hospital.
I think I have everything that I need - chewable calcium, chewable vitamins, protein powder, protein bars, liquid Tylenol, a blender, etc.

My Story
I have been overweight since about the 5th grade - which is a very long time ago! Thru high school my mother tried to make me diet, and always with no success. I can remember using Slim Fast in the 9th or 10th grade! My first year of college, I added on those dreded "freshman 20" pounds, and I didn't even live on campus! Just the busy life of school, work, homework, and time with friends, I was eating out a lot and gaining weight. In 1991 I lost about 20 pounds and weighed my lowest adult weight of 170 pounds. I met my husband during that time. After 4 years of dating, we got married in 1995, and I started adding on weight quickly. Within our first 4 years of marriage, I had put on about 90 pounds. Since 2000 I have had 3 kids, and my weight has ballooned. I have been diagnosed diabetic since 2001, high blood pressure since about 1997, and high cholesterol in 2005. Since the birth of my third child in September 2006, I am at my all time high of 295.
In October 2004 my aunt had the RNY, and had lost about 85 pounds. My mother has been begging me to have weight loss surgery since my Aunt's success. After a lot of soul searching and research, I started looking at RNY - until I went to my first weight loss surgery educational class. By the time I walked out of there, I had almost made up my mind that the Lap Band procedure was better for me. I attended a second weight loss educational seminar, with Dr. Eibes' office, and by the time I left his office that day, I decided that he was the best surgeon, and that the Lap Band was the best procedure for me.
I am definitely looking forward to losing weight, getting off of all the medications, and being able to have a life that is not hampered by being overweight or obese. I don't want my children's lives to be wrecked by my unhealthy weight. I am going to make this work, no matter how hard I have to work to make it successful. I have the support of my husband, many family members, and many friends.
My surgery is scheduled for Monday, October 8th, 2007 - the date of the beginning of my new life!
