Surgeon Testimonial

Erik Wilson, M.D.
I first met Dr. Wilson on March 29, 2005. At that time I weighed 658 lbs and was bedridden. He and his staff were very curteous and helpful, but he explained to me that it was simply too dangerous for me to have surgery at that point. He said that I needed to get below 500 lbs. and regain mobility before it would be safe enough to operate. He perscribed an Optifast diet, which was approximately 1500 calories a day. I did use Optifast for awhile, but eventually moved to real food and counting calories, also at 1500 calories a day.
The next time I saw Dr. Wilson was at the mandatory informational meeting, which I believe that I went to in February 2006. By that point I was under 500 lbs. and still losing. He recognized me and seemed genuinely delighted to see me. (I doubt he thought he would ever see me again.)
He did my Lap RNY on May 22, 2006 and I have done beautifully. I have had no complications whatsoever. I could not be more pleased with Dr. Wilson and I would recommend him to anyone looking into WLS.

Welcome to the losing side, sis! Folks, she's not kidding about how well she's doing. As you may know, Kaycee (and the test of the family) lives in TX and I'm in PA, so I'm just hearing about all this and not witnessing it myself, but from everything I hear, she is totally kicking my butt in terms of recovery, post-op mobility, pain management, etc. At this rate, I figure by the time I make my next trip down there in July, I'll be "the fat sister." :-) Ok, maybe Christmas. Anyway, just want to say how happy I am that everything's going so well for you, and how proud I am of everything you've accomplished so far. I know what a complete difference WLS has made in my life, and I'm so looking forward to that for you. love you! Beth

Hi, Kaycee here. I am home!!! Things have gone very, very well. My sis has kept you pretty well updated, but I do want to thank everyone for their support and their prayers. Everyone has been just amazed at how well I have done. God is so good!!! It just seems so unreal to me that it is over and done with. Even when I look at my tummy I only have 6 tiny incisions. One about 2 inches, the rest an inch or less. Not even any stitches or staples - they super glued me shut. lol! It is hard to realize that my innards have been rearranged. I am just so happy and thankful that it is over and I have done so well, I am SO ready to take my place on the losing side!!!!!

Update
on January 9, 2008 5:44 am
Wow, here I am posting again and it hasn't even been a month this time.  Way to go me!  I did NOT get to have my panniculectomy done over the Christmas holidays.  :(  I thought it was all lining up, but the plastic surgeon decided that the extent of my surgery was going to require someone with more experience in the area than he had, so he is referring me to Houston.  At this point I am waiting to hear whether the suggested doctor will work with my coverage.  If that aspect of it all works out then I have to deal with the timing issue of when I can do it.

I am back in school on 1-11-08, so anything soon is out of the question.  Conceivably I might be able to take a little extra time off at Spring Break and do it then, but that would only give me about two weeks recovery.  I just don't know if that is feasible at all, given the extent of my problem, but once I get the surgeon situation figured out,  I will get a medical opinion on whether that would be reasonable.

The only other good option would be in May, after the semester ends.  I will have 3-4 weeks off before time for my summer internship to begin.  After the internship I will be graduating and hopefully starting work right away, so then getting time off becomes a whole different kettle of fish, the insurance situation changes, etc.  Plus, I really think that having had the panni before job hunting would be very helpful.  It will improve my appearance and I will be able to dress much more professionally than I can now.

Clothes are an issue for me.  Even though I have gotten down into about a 2X (it varies) I have to have shirts that are about 40 inches long to cover my tummy.  This does not create the most professional look in the world.  Dresses are not an option, because my legs have a lot of extra skin also.  So, at this point I do the best I can and hope to get things fixed soon!

On the good news front, I am back in twooterville!  I was at the doctor's office yesterday [sore throat :( antibiotics :)] and I am back down to 297.6!  My little scale at home has been being kind of cranky and I have been having to reset it back to zero each time I weighed, but it showed me as 308 yesterday morning - naked!  It's time for that scale to go bye bye.  I do believe that it is worthwhile to invest in a new one that will actually give me an acurate weight.  I even weighed on two different scales at the doc's, just to make sure.  The first one was the fancy digital scale, but I confirmed in on an old fashioned balance scale.  I haven't been on one of those in years.  It was SO COOL when the 300 lb. weight was too heavy and I had to switch to the 250 one.  I had forgotten how big a thrill that was.  :)

I've posted some updated pics so y'all can join in the fun.

Catching up...
on December 15, 2007 1:59 am
I haven't been on here in forever, basically life has gotten too busy to blog.  In the last six or eight months I reached my lowest weight of 296, then stalled out.  The highest I have seen since then was 320.  (I really do think I was retaining fluid that day.)  Generally I have settled in between 305 and 310.  That is where the scale lands virtually every time.  I did reach my surgeon's original prediction that I would lose about 70% of my excess weight.

I do feel SO much better than I used to.  I have my mobility back, I still have some limitations, but I am certainly ambulatory.  I'm in school, finishing my senior year of college; I'm dating again and I'm generally very busy with life.  I've even applied for an internship for this summer that is something that I never thought that I would have the mobility to even consider.

I am currently back to jumping through hoops, this time to have a panniculectomy.  I have a lot of excess tummy skin (a grade 4 pannus) that interferes with my mobility.  I am hoping that once the panni is done I can up my activity level and jump start my weight loss again.  (Although, even if it doesn't, life is good where I am.)  I am hoping to have it very soon, during the Christmas holidays, while I am out of school.  I just have to finish jumping through all of these durn hoops...

Two-tervillle!!!
on April 1, 2007 3:32 am

I am now officially in two-tervillle!!!  As of yesterday I am 298.  It has seemed to go very slowly lately, with lots of fluctuations, but my weight FINALLY starts with a two!  I was probably 28 the last time that I was this small.  That makes a total loss (pre and post op) of 360 lbs in two years.

As a bonus, I moved down a bra size yesterday too.  I am now in a
40 I.  The band keeps shrinking, but the cup size is hanging in there.  If that holds up maybe one of these days I can justify insurance paying for a breast lift by having a reduction done.  Gonna have to find a new style of bra soon, this one only goes down to a 38.  Whoo hoo, what problems to have!

I am sooooo ready to be in tootervile...  I suddenly dropped to 305 yesterday, after being stalled at 310 for a couple of weeks.  That seems to be the pattern these days, stall and drop, stall and drop.  It can be a bit frustrating during the stalls, but oh well, as long as I keep moving downward, I'm a happy camper.

I've been moving down in sizes too.  I'm generally in a 2X or 28W to 30W.  I got a new bra today, I'm in a 42 I now.  (I started in a 54 FF.)  Man... a 42... that's starting to feel like skinny sizes to me.

I haven't been this small since the '80s , lol!

My Story

1-16-06
I am interested in having WLS. I consulted a surgeon last March. At that point I weighed my all time high of 658 lbs. with a BMI of 116.5, and I was bedridden. He told me that at that weight the surgery was just too risky, that I needed to get down to 500 lbs. and also become ambulatory. He recommeded Optifast for presurgical weight loss. I did do Optifast for a while, but eventually moved to just counting calories. At this point I have lost 163 pounds and have broken the magic number, now weighing 495. (Whoo hoo!) While I am still in bed most of the time, my mobility has increased significantly. I am able to get around the house somewhat using a walker and am able to sit up in a chair, sometimes for a couple of hours at a time. In the next few months I hope to start having my various pre-op tests done. I also want to keep increasing my mobility and get my weight as low as possible before surgery.
Some might ask why I still want WLS when I seem to be having such success "on my own." The answer is that I am not living in the real world right now, with all it's temptations. I am dependant on family members to provide me with food, and while they give me pretty much anything I ask for, it is very different than facing reality out there. I see WLS as the light at the end of a very looooong dark tunnel that I have lived in my entire life. I hope that after surgery I can become a "normal" weight and live the life of a normal person.
Just a few facts about myself: I am a 45 year old widow. I have two children, 18 and 21. They both still live with me and are both in college. The three of us are currently displaced by Hurricane Rita and are living with my parents. Our home is being repaired and we hope to get back home in the next few months.
Our entire family has serious weight issues. In the past couple of years both my brother and sister have had RNY and have done wonderfully. My brother's surgery was almost two years ago and he is at goal. He had to have an open procedure and had a boatload of complications initially. He was in the hospital for almost a month, but has done well since. He is doing great. He got married a few months ago and is over the moon happy. My sister's surgery was a little over a year ago and she has lost 160 lbs. or so. She had it done lap. and has never had a single complication.
So here I am waiting and working towards my goal. I have lurked a bit, but have decided to come out of hiding. Typing is awkward for me to do in bed and my computer can be cranky, but I have decided to make the effort and join in.

I haven't updated for a while so I thought I would fill everyone in on where things stand. I am currently jumping steadily through my pre-op hoops.

Get weight below 500 lbs. - done, now 464
Become ambulatory - done/continuing to work on
Informational meeting - done
Appointment with new PCP - done
Psych consult - done
Bloodwork - done
Cardiac consult - done
Pulmonary consult - test scheduled for tomorrow
Abdominal/gallbladder ultrasound - scheduled for tomorrow
Nutritionist consult - waiting for a call back to schedule
Sleep study - I am trying to skip this - apnea seems to be gone

When I finish these last couple of these things, it is back to the surgeon to get scoped and hopefully set a date! I hoping that will be in the next few weeks. I hope that I will be able to have surgery by early summer. I want to return to school in August and I want plenty of time to recover first. I will update more as I have news.

5-26-06
Back home. Surgery was Monday, everything went great!!!!!

5-30-06
I am 8 days out and went in for my first post op check up today. I weigh 429, which is down 24 1/2 lbs. from my last pre-op appointment 2 weeks ago. I am doing great and they say everything is right on track. They are letting me move to pureed foods today, whoo hoo!

6-21-06
I will be one month out tomorrow. Everything is going well. I am down to 415, as of today. That makes 39 lbs. down since surgery and 243 lbs. total loss.

7-11-06
Check up today, all is good. Weight - 401.5, down 52 lbs. since surgery. (7 weeks out) I had really hoped to break 400 today... Oh well, it's still good. : )

7-31-06
I have a new name. I have changed from Kaycee to Shar Pei Kay. I will let you guess why. LOL

8-8-06
I was 11 weeks out yesterday. I had a check up with my surgeon today. I am down 19.5 more lbs. That brings me down to 382. I have finally, finally broken 400! It feels SOOOOOO wonderful to be living in Threederland! My BMI broke 70 too, finally. It is 67.7 now. : ) I am down 71.5 lbs. since surgery. Life is good...

9-27-06
I am a little over 4 months post-op now. I weighed in today at 362.4. I am down 92 lbs. since surgery. I was really hoping to have lost 100... Oh, well, this is good too... I am just a little disappointed. Last time I was down 19.5 lbs in 4 weeks, this time I am down 19.6 in 7 weeks... I was averaging over 4 lbs. a week, this is less than 3 lbs. a week... I really am happy... just not AS happy as I had hoped to be...
