Like the least about him: Didn't check my incision so it went thick and bumpy and didn't have me do bloodwork until almost a year after surgery, luckily it ended up being just fine. Doesn't ask alot of questions of you, you have to guess what is important to mention to him.
For future patients: You have to be a bit proactive with him. I had a very smooth journey, so I was lucky. Take your vitamins!!!!
Aftercare: Very emphasized, he sees you every month for a year, every 3 months the next, and then once a year for life. Provides access to nutritionist and trainer.
Does he address risks: absolutely
Rate Overall: Great
Surgical competence/bedside manner or both: Surgical competence is off the charts. Bedside manner is good, not great.
Bottom line: Dr. Afram did a fantastic job. I have done wonderfully and have had absolutely no complications. I truely believe he saved my life.
My name is Shelley, I live in MD with my 2 year old son and husband. I had RNY on May 9, 2006 and have gone from 265 to a current weight of 155 pounds. I have met my doctor's goal, however my personal goal is 145. I am in a size 10..some 8's and feel better than I ever have in my life.

My Story
5/8/07 Alright here is the short version! I have been overweight my entire life. I was married in 2002 and blessed with my first child, a son in Sept 05. On May 9, 2006 I had RNY with Dr. Joseph Afram in Washington, DC and it changed my life.
I am currently 10 pounds from goal.
A month ago on April 10, 2007 I had a bl/ba, axcillia repair and short incision arm lift (w/lipo) with Dr. Paul Thesiger in Chevy Chase, MD. So far I am very pleased with the results. I had 375cc saline implants under the muscle which has put me at a full D. As I plan to have more children I am holding off on the tummy and thighs. I hope to have a LBL in a couple years once my family is complete!
