Surgeon Testimonial

Robert Michaelson
My first impression of "the man with the magic hands".... love those eyes! :) No, really just the nicest guy and he knows his stuff, wonderful bedside manner too. Met and listened to him speak two times before seeing him in his office. The office staff is fabulous, always there to help with questions, fit me in well with my schedule and they always have smiles...(you can even hear the smiles over the phone). I tell everyone about NWWLS and Dr. Michaelson. Aftercare is wonderful...support groups are great. I could not have picked a better place to have this life changing WLS. I'd give Dr. Michaelson and NWWLS a (four star ****)!!

I am glad you are doing well. Thanks for the well wishes. I too have my sister and my mother having surgery the same day as mine! I know it will be great to have the support of them and to go through everything together.

I can't beleive it's been almost a month since I've been here...how time flys!

I've had some major down time at the gym due to some problems with my knee... I felt my kneecap move while doing "pigeon" stretch at the end of class a few weeks back.  I've been going to physical therepay and I'm now back to kickboxing 2 days a week and then just weights and stationary bike the other days.

Our townhouse is coming along great!  In regard to our kitchen we have picked out our cabinets, granite counters, we bought our new sink and faucet and then this Sat we go to pick out our floors..will meet with the project manager soon.

The fence is painted, the custom blinds on the upper level (bedroom, office, & bath) are being installed today.  Last weekend I bought curtains for the living room and dining that Shane hung for me.... we have not ordered the blinds for that level yet.

Ok, that is all from now..... no time for spell check...

Join my team "Team Tookie" in honor of my father, Marv Frodsham who passed away in Feb07, all obesity related. He used to call us girls Tookie.

I will be helping the ASBS Foundation and Obesity Action Coalition fight one of the nation's leading causes of death and disability at the Walk from Obesity on September 28, 2008 and would like to invite you to participate.

If you cannot participate, your donation will help in the fight against obesity by providing much needed funding to support our efforts. The obesity crisis is an epidemic and your support will help make important advances against the diease of obesity.

My personal fundraising goal is $1000 and with your help I can get there!

You can join my team too..."Team Tookie", that was one of Dads nicknames for the girls in the family.

Gym: 5 mins stretching, THEN "Kick-It" class (kickboxing, including abs & stretching at the end)  worked out 1 hour + 5 mins,  burned 483 calories at 40% fat.

Here is one of my most recent pics doing yard work! :)

I slept in today...was going to be a lazy Sunday... but, I chnaged my mind and got a wild hair...  I jumped on the treadmill again and this was the results...

17.54 minutes (first two were walking), 1.002 miles, at the speed of 3.4 for the first 11 mins of the running the finished the last 5 at the speed of 3.5.  I can't believe I'm RUNNING!!

I'm lovin being a homeowner!!

I'm back to the gym full time again...wwooohooo.... BUT, last night I left the office late and traffic sucked...I knew I was going to be late getting to my kickboxing class so I decided to just go home and try out the new treadmill that we got.

NSV = Non Scale Victory I RAN for the first time, 9.16 mins, .50 mile, at speed of 3.4.    I know it's only 9 mins.....but it's 9 more then I've ever done before! :)

Today I had my 11th fill (added .40cc for a total of 6.8cc in 10cc band), also had my ONE YEAR  review...at www.NWWLS.com (banded 6/21/07) wwoohhoo! down 70#.  I will post the "before & after" pics soon... I need help editing them into side by side pics first.

I also went back to my kickboxing class and lifted some weights at the gym today... finally I did not have to go home and pack or unpack anything.  I can save some of it for Thursday since my class is earlier in the evening and then lots to do over the weekend.  But, it's getting there.... it's starting to look like a HOME!

Well.... just a fast update we are about 90% moved in/unpacked but still have crap at the old place, need to sort "storage unit" over the weekend to make room and get that place empty.  The sooner the better, cuz they can get in there to paint and get it rented...then longer we are in there the longer we PAY, cuz we have a lease.  But I think they already have a renter.

Shane has mediatory overtime at work including the weekend...so, I'm doing this solo... oh well...getting my workout in that is for sure!!  my butt is gonna be so toned over the next couple months with the stairs in the townhouse...and the more H2o I drink the more times I take the stairs... there is no bathroom on the main floor but there is one on the 1st & 3rd.... LOL

OK, I'm off this thing...I'm going to get my nails done... they need it SO BAD... you have no idea!! LOL

We SHOULD get the keys to our new townhouse tomorrow!!  I'm waiting for the call for time & location to get them.... I think it will be on my lunch break if possible!! :)

I'll be testing out the dish washer and washer and drying ASAP!! hehehe

My girlfreind Roshele is coming by Friday after work to see the new place, she is a designer and she is going to advise us on what updates we should do before we move in and what can wait a little while.  We don't want to over improve for our area and not get our money back when it comes time to sell in a few years.

So, guess it's time to REALLY start packing this weekend.  I've been sick the last two days and have not really done much of anything.

I've been packing up my office this week (my boss bought a new house too) and everything will be "moved" on Friday, then hopefully the internet and phone lines will be up and running by end of business so I don't have any delays come Monday when it is time to close the books and do invoicing.

That's all for now......that's enough don't ya think!?!? LOL

Gym: OFF  We were in San Diego on a business trip.  My boss said we did not have to go back to the convention center because our flight was in the early afternoon, so we could have the morning to ourselves.  So, we drove to the beach and walked on the boardwalk with a latte!!  Then we went to the airport... but our flight was at 4pm (delayed).... so we spent almost 5 hours waiting.  So, with the morning walk I'm only gonna say I worked out 20 mins.

I've been really busy, so I'm writting this on Wed (5/21, and I don't recall all the food but still wanted to note my exercise)

Gym: OFF  We were in San Diego on a business trip we took a shuttle from the hotel to the convention center to our booth that was open at 10am...did lots of walking around, but I'm not gonna count that.  Walk across the street at 4pm for drinks with everyone....then we walked about 20 mins to dinner.  After dinner we walked a few blocks, but some people were tired from standing at the booth all day in dress shoes so, we took a cab back to the hotel.  Then a few of us walked about 10 mins round trip to a pub for after dinner drinks.   So, between all of that walking I'm only gonna say I worked out 45 mins.

I will post pictures later of my new business outfit.... it felt so good walking in there and seeing people who have not seen me in a year.... amazing....one guy even walked up to me and asked if I had been helped and if I had any questions he could answer.... HE DID NOT RECOGNIZE ME!!

Gym: OFF  We were in San Diego on a business trip BUT today was "play day"  so Shane & I went to SeaWorld... we saw SHAMU!!  That was cool... we walk around from 9-10:45am, then sat down for the show that started at 11am....walked back to the car and then left after that.... the we drove to the water, walked about 15 mins from the car and took a 2 hour boat tour at 12:30pm.... DANG IT'S FREAKEN HOT IN SAN DIEGO!!  So, between the two I'm only gonna say I worked out 1 hour + 10 mins.

MY STORY.......(written April 2007)

I'm 36 years old....married to a wonderful man Shane.

Well, I've been over weight for as long as I can remember..... at least since 4th grade, maybe sooner.

I was VERY active in grade school... soccer, basketball, softball, road my bike everywhere.  As soon as I got to Jr. High.....skinny kids were NOT nice to the fat kids...and that was the beginning to the next 6 years of hell.  I never even took PE, I got out of it (I'm mad at the school district NOW for letting that happen..they should have MADE ME take it.... I think it only hurt me), instead I had to show proof of taking water aerobics at the public pool three days a week. Oh well, that was 20 years ago now..... I did the OptiFast liquid diet (with a Doctor) in 1996 and lost 104 pounds...... but gained it ALL back when time came to eat "real food". Over the years I tired, Slim Fast, Lean Cuisines, Herbalife, Metabolife, Person Trainer..... I lost 85 pounds from May 2004 to May 2006 just with a CRAZY low cal diet and LOTS of exercise.... but I've managed to put close to 40 pounds back on.... I know it has been a stressful few months, but.... I know I have a problem controlling my food intake but I LOVE working out!! I'm at the gym 6 days a week.  I just consume so many more calories then I can burn off. I recently lost my Father.....on 2/17/07 at 480 pounds, and ALL of his health issues stemmed from being obese all his adult life. Diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure (on dialysis the last 3 weeks of his life), and lung disease caused by sleep apnea. He actually had a 2nd Lap-Band seminar scheduled for the day after he was admitted to the hospital...sadly he never made it. He had been turned down two times by his insurance, even with letters from three doctors stating it was life or death! (I love & miss you daddy) I went with my Sister to a Lap-Band seminar for NWWLS on 4/17/07 (two months after we lost our father) I went just to support her....I always thought of surgery as "cheating".... but after I listened and watched the slide show and read the materials, and talked with others who had had it (including staff members)....I just KNEW this was totally the "TOOL" for me!!  I called my insurance right away and was told ANYTHING related to WLS was EXCLUDED.  So, I'm going to be self pay.... the cool thing is... my sister is going to do it too....WWWoohhhhoooo!!  We are both self pay....but it will be so worth every last dime!! I have an appointment at NWWLS www.thelapband.com on 5/21/07 at 1:30pm with Nurse/Nutritionalist and Psychologist  at 3pm.  Then I see the surgeon Robert Michaelson, M.D.,Ph.D, F.A.C.S. on 5/23/07 at 4pm. Until then.... my Hubby is gonna go with me to a seminar on 5/1/07....just to learn more... he is 100% supportive! I was told that if everything is in order with my sister & I after we see Dr. Michaelson then we can schedule the surgery for just a few weeks out.  We are crossing our fingers to get it done the 2nd or 3rd Thurs of June......we get to do it on the same day too!! I also have IBS-C, so if there is anyone out there that has managed to keep THAT under control along with the Lap-Band as well... I'd love to hear from ya!! This is just the beginning to our new, healthy, active lifestyles!

ABOUT MY BAND.......

I have a small AP band (APS).

Allergan/Inamed has a new band in the US called the AP band.
AP stands for Advanced Platform.

There are a couple of differences in this band and the previous ones:

1. Cuff - the cuff on the AP band is 360 degrees around, as opposed to about 300 degrees on the prior bands (there was no cuff around the buckle on the old ones)
2. Cuff length - the cuff on the AP band is 18mm longer/taller than on the previous bands, so the surface area in contact with the stomach is much greater, hopefully increasing the speed of weight loss and maybe reducing the risk of slips
3. Cuff volume - the AP small holds 10cc, the AP large holds 14cc
Note that we do not believe that AP patients will lose MORE weight, just possibly faster. So those of you with the older models, it would definitely not be to your benefit to think about having your band swapped out!
·         They are either APS (small, 10cc) or APL (large, 14cc).
·         They are considered by some to be "the next generation in AGBs".
·         They are considered less likely to cause blockage or obstruction than other AGP types.
·         They are considered less likely to slip than other AGP types.
·         They are considered to be less likely to cause band erosion than other AGP types.
·         Like the VG band it is "Omniform" technology - i.e. the balloon has ribs or baffles and the band itself is curved.
·         The AP has more of a 360 inflation around the stomach as opposed to the 10cm or 9.75cm (4cc) bands, which have more like 260 or 280 degrees inflation (the rest being the buckle), and the VG which has more like 280 or 300. It is understood that this was simply an upgrade to the existing band to make it easier and less traumatic to remove.
·         The silicone material is much softer than other AGP types.
·        They are more concentric (rounded) when inflated than other AGB types.
·         The balloon is pleated to 'grip' the stomach better.
·         The balloon goes all the way around the inner surface of the band, rather than missing a piece at the locking mechanism.
·         The balloon is wider.
·         They have an easier release mechanism to remove the band if need be.
·         They have the locking mechanism isolated from the stomach.
·         AP type bands have been FDA approved for the US, but will not be available until the summer at the earliest.
·         We understand that there are NO plans at this time to discontinue any of the bands Allergan already makes. They still plan to manufacture and offer the 10cm and the 9.75cm (the 4cc) bands as well as the VG band.

·         APS ( small)
·         APL ( large )
