I am a 57 year old mother of 3 kids.  My youngest is a junior in high school, and his older siblings are 34 and 35 years old.  I am a legal secretary on an extremely busy desk, which renders me tired (lazy) at the end of the day.  I would come home, grab something subconscientiously and stuff my face in front of the tv.  Consequently, I've put on a lot of weight over the years.  I signed up for lapband surgery in 2003 and again in 2007 and chickened out both times!  This time (12/15/11), I actually went through with it and am excited about using this "tool" to reach my goals once and for all!  I'm looking forwarding to meeting online friends during this journey. Best of luck to you all, too!  Kathi

Finally got my band tightened!
on January 27, 2012 9:29 pm
Okay, let's just say that the longer my band was waiting to be filled since the surgery,  the easier it was to fall into temptation and eat.  Since I hadn't had my first fill yet, I just wasn't getting much of a feeling of fullness when I would eat. So, I went to Vegas and was good most of the time, but I had my moments where I ate too much food.  I didn't like that I could do that considering I had just had weight loss surgery!

The good news is that I'm down 15 lbs. since I first saw the doctor for a lapband surgery consultation, and I feel better.  The not so good news is that I could have been continuing to lose weight in the 6 weeks after surgery while waiting for my first fill, but instead, I started eating things I shouldn't, so I didn't lose weight.  In fact, I gained a pound.

I'm not going to let this get to me.  The fact is that I had the procedure done because I DON'T have adequate willpower.  Plain and simple.  However, I got my first fill day before yesterday, and I'm truly excited for the first time.  I know now that having the smaller stomach pouch will help me be full faster, and that will motivate me to stay on the right path.

My doctor has me on liquids for 4 days and then I can start eating solids.  The greatest challenge, of course, is to make sure that my allowed three meals per day have the essential nutrients that my body needs while I'm losing weight.  I'm up for the challenge!  I have enough knowledge about nutrition and enough brains to know that I'm going to have to eat foods that pack a lot of nutrition into small quantities so I stay healthy.  That means making sure that, if I can only eat about 2 cups of food per day, that I make sure I get the proper amount of protein, vegetables, fruits and dairy products crammed into that small amount of food.

To help me figure it out, I've been scouring the internet for healthy and yummy recipes that lapbanders have posted all over the world.  I've got quite a collection now and, in two more days, when I can eat solids, I'm looking forward to cooking up some of the recipes and keeping the food interesting.  For instance, I LOVE PIZZA.  I found a recipe online where a pretty ingenious person figured out a way to make the pizza crust out of cauliflower!  Basically, you put the cauliflower into a food processor and grind it up well (but not too fine) and then nuke it for several minutes, then mix it with some other good stuff like cheese, salt, etc., and then pat it into the bottom and sides of a pizza pan and bake for a bit, and then put your toppings on and bake again.  Sounds so delicious!  I mean, why WOULDN'T you want to eat a crust made out of healthy veggies (so long as you can put the yummy toppings on it)??  If we can find the recipes that trick our minds into thinking that we're eating the real thing, then there's no reason why we can't all be happy on our long lapband journey.

Again, I'm E-X-C-I-T-E-D.  I was almost 289 lbs at my highest weight.   Now I'm at 257.  With this amazing tool, and some creative cooking, exercise, and a positive attitude, I know that I'm finally going to beat the odds and do the work required to change the way I look and feel.  Okay, I'm saying it, but seeing is believing, so by the next time I post anything, hopefully I'll have some significant weight loss to report.  Oh, please keep in mind that I am 57 years old, have basically avoided exercise my entire life, and I'm starting with a personal trainer tomorrow!  Eek!!

Wish me luck!  I'm sending my good wishes right back to all of you out there that are working it while you go through the same ups and downs of this journey.

22 days post-op
on January 5, 2012 4:49 pm
I’ve survived surgery. I thought that the surgery would be easy because that’s what I’ve always heard. Well, truth be told, it would have been easy if I’d paid attention to the instructions. I didn’t “get” that I was supposed to be drinking plenty of water right out of surgery (I was afraid of stretching my stomach), so I was only eating my three assigned liquid meals each day for a couple of weeks after surgery. Consequently, I became extremely dehydrated. Not to the point of hospitalization, but close. Anyway, now I’m getting on board with the program a little more than before. Since I’m at about 4 weeks now, I can actually eat some real food like eggs, crackers, ground meat, etc., which is thrilling to me. The thing is, my band doesn’t get tightened until January 25th so my stomach is “open,” and I’m not getting very full when I eat. I’m hungry, too! Also, I’m flying to Vegas to see a friend for 5 days, and will have to use will power not to indulge in things I shouldn’t. I’m pretty sure it won’t be an issue because I’m pretty determined to make this work. If anybody has any tips for me – not just regarding travel, but just tips in general regarding lap-band recovery – please let me know. Thanks and Happy New Year! I've survived surgery.
