Surgeon Testimonial

Jeffrey Baker M.D.
Dr. Jeffrey Baker is a very nice, understanding and sympathetic surgeon. His nurse Darla is just a delighful lady to speak with.rnrnI can't say there's anything you should be prepared for except that it takes about a month to schedule any appointment there usually.rnrnHe addressed the risks with me for this surgery but did agree that the risks do not outweigh the benefits.rnrnI would rate Dr. Baker a 10.

Welp I had surgery
on July 29, 2007 12:10 am
I had RNY surgery 1 week ago.  I'm doing well, just need to exercise more.  2 of my incisions seemed to have a little bit of the ol' white stuff on them so I covered them w/ bandaids and triple antibiotic ointment and now they're fine.

The surgery went well, Dr. Baker said there was hardly any bleeding and the 10 days of liquids before really did my liver good.

ADVICE:

The best advice I can give is this:  Take some saline nose spray to the hospital with you so you can moisten your sinuses just above the roof of your mouth when you wake up, because the dryness you get from the anesthesia is the worst you will ever have.  When I swallowed it felt like the roof of my mouth was gluing itself to the inside of my sinuses.  I asked my doctor and he said it would have been fine to use some saline nose spray had I actually brought some with me for the dryness, but I had no idea I would need it.  So, I got so desperate (because they do not allow you to drink until the next day) that I used some of my moisturizing eye drops instead.  I told a nurse I was going to just to be safe and she said she didn't condone it but that she wouldn't tell on me for it.  It was about the same thing anyway.

Also, before going into the hospital I would suggest you do some back stretching exercises for at least a month, because the way they have you arched up on the table during surgery made my back hurt worse than I had ever felt for about 24 hours, and nothing made it feel better, not even the pain meds.  Finally about 2am they gave me a heating pad, which helped but not enough.  Had I known I would have such horrendous back pain I would have done exercises to strengthen my back before hand.

The gas after surgery is pretty bad, when you get home.  It's been a week for me and I'm pretty bloated and burping all the time.  I would advise you buy some gas-x and some liquid immodium (dilute your medicines after surgery).

That big giant bruise you see in my picture is gone already,  It disappeared within about 5 days.

Oh, and my anesthesiologist's name was Dr. Martini, which I thought was very fitting considering his profession!

Grr

I'm pretty frustrated.  I went in for my appointment with the surgeon the week before surgery and first of all I hadn't lost any weight but 1 pound in the prior month, so he was going to put me on a liquid diet for the week before surgery.

Well, he left the room to check on some things and when he came back he said the operating room didn't have me on the schedule like the paperwork did in my file.  It turns out that the nurse was so frazzled and busy when we left the appointment the month before that she forgot to schedule my surgery with the operating room people.

So, I have to wait another month for surgery now.  But, I guess it's okay.  Have to look at the upside to this, that I have another month to lose 5-10 more pounds.
