This time the doc added Tricor to the mix to get my cholesterol down. He also wanted me to start exercising 30  minutes a day on most days. Well, telling me that is like saying "Do it every day except today". The smoking is slowly going away. I've cut back from  3 packs/day down to about a half pack. The trick is just not having them around places that I used to smoke (In front of the computer being a big one!)

I have to go back next Friday then again 4 weeks after that. At least one month of the 6 will be out of the way. I think It'll seem more real to me once I get a couple months closer. At this point it's still (in my mind) something that I'm vaguely aiming at, but not thinking about most of the time.

Met my PCP
on January 26, 2008 7:18 am
I met my PCP yesterday for the first time and explained what I was doing there. It turned out that I had hypertension so I ended up getting an EKG and a script for some blood pressure medicine along with the Chantix to help me quit smoking. He said that surgery is out of the question until the BP is under control. That's fine since I still have to get through the 6 months of him monitoring my weight loss attempts anyway. Art least the first step is out of the way...now I just have another 20 or 30 left to go

My Story

1-19-08
I found OH after reading a few postings on another site. This place is a great source of information!

I've been overweight most of my life but it's getting worse as I get older. I lost weight with Phentermine back in the mid 90's. I remember how people changed as the weight came off. Some people seemed to be almost offended by it. They were in the minority though. Of course, the weight loss was temporary. Once I stopped taking the phentermine, it all came back and more.
The next time I tried it, it wasn't nearly as effective. I tried it a few more times then realized that I had built up a strong tolerance. Even after waiting 6 months, I'd take it for a week and it was like taking nothing at all.

I tried a few variations on the Atkins diet. I could lose some weight but I couldn't stick with it for more than a couple months at a time. I'm now pushing 260 LBs and I'm only 5'6". I seem to be getting 10 lbs heavier each year. After reading about all the procedures, I'm looking into getting a Duodenal Switch. I'm just starting out so I still have to go through all the hoops yet... the tests, the psych eval, the insurance battles, quitting smoking , figuring out how to get the time off from work and anything else I need to do. Just a rough estimate I'm guessing the earliest I can get all this done would be by next Thanksgiving day...but I guess ya gotta start somewhere.
