Surgeon Testimonial

Jack F. Rutledge, M.D.
I first met Dr. Rutledge about 4 years ago when I went to a WLS seminar and I thougt that if I went thru with the surgery..he was going to be the one to do it. There were three other doctors in the seminar with him, but I knew he was the one for me. Fast forward four years and we meet again at a weight loss seminar. He was the only surgeon there but I had made up my mind four years before. I turned in my paper work and requested a consulation appointment with his office. Went to the appointment on December 14, 2006 and I thought he was little distant. Did not feel really comfortable with him after that visit. But I talked it over with some friends and they said his bedside manner was not as important as his credentials. Then one of my friends made me reallize a few things that could have influenced my judgement. 1) I was scared 2) I was PMSing 3) I was scared!! 4) a little personal stress going on at the time. So I knew that the main problem was ME on that visit. His office was very thorough in getting my paper work submitted to my insurance company and I got approval in exactly 10 business days and had a surgery date three weeks later. I had to have one more office visit with Dr. Rutledge and he wanted to met one of my family members. My mom was not really wanting me to have to surgery and did not want to go to visit with me. But she came and I was afraid that would be a disaster but you know what....my mom and aunt both got along great with Dr. Rutledge..which is saying a whole lot. They normally do not get along to well with Dr's. :-)rnrnSo on the day of my surgery I had a few friends and family along with me and he was even great to my friends. My friends Monica and Michelle were back in the surgery prep area with me and Monica called him Dr. McDreamy and he just laughed. He noticed right away that my mother was not present and he went out into the waiting area to talk to her before he started my surgery!! How is that for concern and courtesy? I would give him a five! !(I work for a call center and 5 is the highest score you can get). He came to check me over the next day and I was cleared to go home. I will have a follow up appointment next Thursday and go from there. I think Dr. Rutledges bedside manner and surgical competence are both excellent!

What a week
on July 26, 2007 7:05 pm
Well, two things were said to me this week to almost discourage me...but I will not be discouraged.  The first was out of a childs mouth and you can tell it bothered me cause I am posting it here.  But one of my coworkers brought her child to the office one day and my manager asked me to take the kid to this ladies desk and give him some candy.  I saw the kid at the movies with his mothers boyfriend a few days later and I pulled my car up to them and said hi.  I asked the little boy if he remembered me and  you know what he said???? Yes, I remember you..you the lady with the FAT LEGS!  I was like ok...I really did not know what to think.  I know my thighs are big but not as big as they used to be...and I was starting to feel really good about my weight loss and that kind of knocked the wind out of my high.  I know he is just a kid but kids speak honestly and that made me think that is what everyone else still sees when they see or meet me.

The other thing was today at work, this lady that used to work at the eye doctor's office I go to, saw me and commented on my weight loss. I told her I had surgery to lose weight and she was like..oh I had gastric by pass too! But I gained 100 pounds back!  That really made me feel weird.  She had the same surgeon that I had and I know that is one thing I fear is regaining the weight because I go back to my old ways of eating.  I am so glad I am on this board, because I have seen success stories of ppl who are several years post op and maintaining just fine.  But I also know that weight regain is a possiblity if you don't follow the rules of the pouch.  And it makes me think, I could not control it before wls surgery..so what makes me think I can control for the rest of my life after wls?  I see this is really going to be a struggle but I am up for the challenge.  I know that God is in control and He allowed me to have this wls and it all happened at the right time, which was in His timing.  So I know one thing, Prayer is the first key to weight loss and maintenance!  I thank God for this opportunity and I have to use the tool that he gave me and have faith and believe His word.  Phil 4:13! I can do all things thru Christ who strengthens me!

5 Month Challenge
on July 26, 2007 6:54 pm
Well Cookie on BAF has started a 5 month challenge to get members to drop those last few pounds they have been struggling with.  It is geared to really had ppl more than 2 years out to get back motivated, but all are welcome to attend.  I decided to participate and my goal is to lose 55 pounds by 12/31/07.  My starting weight was 232.8. I am down 5 lbs for the first week! Only 50 more to go!  lol Only 50..like I am saying 5 more to go.  But it is not just about losing it is about maintaining and sticking with a healthy lifestyle.  Looking at my pledge, I ok with it last week.  I worked out 5 days and each day I got in at least 45 minutees, I did not get in 64 oz of water each day, nor did I get in all my supplements.  But I only had 3 meals each day with no snacking in between.  I got all my exercise in, but I ate a few gumballs.  I don't think I had any treats last weeks out side my normal meals.  So I am posting now near the end of the second week and this week has been good too.  I have worked out 4 days already at 45 minutes, only eaten my 3 meals a day and gotten in most of water each day and my supplements. I had a gum ball today...ugh! lol And I have had weight watchers english toffe a few days this week too.  See you next week with an update!

I pledge to exercise at least 4 times per week.
I pledge to exercise for at least 45  minutes each time.
I pledge to drink at least 64 ounces of water per day.
I pledge to take all vitamins, supplements, and medications.
I pledge to eat 3 meals per day.
I pledge to NOT graze between meals.
I pledge to cut out sugared gumballs entirely from my daily food intake.
I pledge to get in 70 grams of protein per day.
I pledge to eat healthy and have1 day(s) during the week when I allow myself treats.

I, Stephanie B,  make this pledge to myself and for myself!

Monday Morning Weigh Ins on Sunday
on July 8, 2007 5:20 pm

Well, I just did my weekly weigh in and here are my stats

HW 327
SW 322 (318 two days after last visit to surgeon at hospital morning off surgery)
LW 236.4
CW 232.8

Total Loss 3.47 pounds and I am now half way to my goal! Who would have thought I would be almost 100 pounds lighter this time last year?? I certainly would not.  While I had been researching the surgery for 4 years, I had not made up my mind that I would do it until Nov of last year.....

I still want to lose 92.8 pounds to get to my surgeons goal.  I do believe that his goal weight for me is a bit low but I want to hit that goal so that when I experience the 10-20% weight regain..I will be at my goal weight of 168.  Things are still going well with my eating and working out.  I have ventured out and started to buy the SF weight watcher candy and I bought some SF low fat popscicles and fudgcicles...man are the fudge pops good!! I don't know if buying these things are a good or bad thing.  I don't want t o feel deprived so I get them.  I am still only eating three meals a day with no snacking in between, other than gum, which is generally sugar free. The candy and popscicles that I bought I incorporate them into my meal time as a dessert, not as a snack later during the day.  With the popscicles, I actually eat them before my mail, cause I don't want to break the no drinking liquids until an hour after my meal time.  I guess that is all I have to post right now..but I will chat with you later!
