Surgeon Testimonial

Laura Machado
My first impression of Dr. Machado, was that she really seemed to know what she was talking about. Her office staff is very helpful and supportive. Dr. Machado is very thorough on your very first consultation appt. She goes over all the risks, costs, recommendations and after care programs.

Just a quick update. I am down 74 lbs and feeling a lot better. I am really starting to feel more normal now. I feel like I am on a really good diet and sticking with it. I can eat just about anything, but I stick with my portion size and try to stick with high protein foods first. Well I will update again soon.

I woke up this morning and I am finally down 60 lbs. My goal right now is 120 lbs, so I am officially half way there. It has not been very long, but it feels like it has taken forever. I am out about 10 weeks, but it feels like months. Well I will update after my next follow up with doctor on 06-12-08.

Well I am down 51 lbs now. I am 8 weeks out and have finally hit the 50 mark. It is really funny how it feels like it has been coming off very slowly, but I would have never lost 51 lbs. in 8 weeks before surgery!!

Well everything has been going pretty good. I am 6 or7 weeks out and have lost 39.5 lbs. It feels like it comes off so slowly, but I know that is not true. If I had not had the surgery I would have never lost this amount of weight in such a small amount of time. I am finally doing ok with my protein and am starting to feel better. I had a couple of weeks where I did not get any protein in and now I am worried that I am going to start losing my hair. Well I will update again after I have my 2 month followup on 5-9-08.

So I was a little disappointed that I only lost 1 lb at my two week checkup. Sande says it is normal because I lost so much the first week, but I was still hoping for more. I started working out on 03-28 and I feel really good. I am doing 30 minutes of cardio and some strength training. I will update after next checkup.

My Story

My name is Jaime and I have never been skinny. I have always had a warped sense of myself. I always thought that I was heavy. In high school, I was 6 feet tall and weighed about 170. I wore a size 13 and thought that I was fat. I was not that typical 5 foot 100 lb. teen, so I felt out of place. Now that I look back on it, I wish that I was close to that size now. Now I know that it was just me and my insecurities. I am not that average person who slowly gained weight during pregnancy and could not get it off. I actually gained 28 lbs. with my first child and had lost it all plus 10 lbs. by the time of my 8 week followup. With my second child, I only gained 15 lbs. and had lost it by the time that I left the hospital. My youngest is 4 years old, and over that 4 years after giving birth, I have gained about 50 lbs. I am insulin resistant, and have been told that I will have a very hard time losing weight on my own. I have tried all the "diets" and been to a nutritionist. I will lose 3 lbs. and gain 5, or lose 5 and gain 7. I am not diabetic yet, but could be if things are not corrected now. Other than that, my cholesterol is high and I have joint and back pain. I have a 5 year old daughter and a 4 year old son, who need me to be able to run and play with them, and I have not been doing that. I want to feel more comfortable in my skin and to be happy again.
So I began the long journey of looking for a surgeon. My friend Brook and I have been kind of doing this together and we found Dr. Machado, who from the time we met her, we were very comfortable with. She really seems to know her stuff. She has had very good results and just seems like a normal person and not somebody who treats you like you are beneath them. Brook and I work together, so we could not take the time off together, so she had her surgery in January and I am planning to have mine done in early March. I have had most of my pre-op stuff done. I see the nutritionist on Jan. 24 and then I will schedule my Psych exam and I will be ready for Dr. Machados office to submit for approval. I am starting to get jittery and I have not even scheduled my surgery yet. I am looking forward to it, but am scared because there is always that "what if".
