Surgeon Testimonial

John W. Baker M.D.
I went to meet Dr. Baker with the thought that he was going to be strict and stern, but to be honest, I did not get that feeling at all. I felt very comfortable talking with him, and listened to every word he said to me. rnMy second time I met him (to see how I was doing on the pre-op shakes) he was all cheers and compliments to me, about how well I was doing with the pre-op shakes. He definitly made me blush.rnHe was very caring towards me and saw me every day that I was in the hospital after surgery. When I woke from surgery he was the first person I saw and I felt that all was okay. rnHe has a very good aftercare program, and it is pretty much failsafe, if you just follow what the paperwork says and what he tells you, there is pretty much no room to fail at this. rnMy overall rating with Dr Baker is a 10+ He is an excellent surgeon and had a really great bedside manner. rnAll I can say to future patients is to be yourself, don't hide anything, be totally honest when you speak to him. I believe he truly cares about all of his patients. And he does have beautiful blue eyes!!rn

My Story

September 23rd
on September 23, 2005 12:00 am
Friday 23rd - I was all ready for surgery at Baptist. And they started to put the epidural in and another nurse gave me some calming pre-op medicine in my IV called Versed. They had some trouble with the epidural and had to pull it out and redo it, so the other nurse gave me another dose of Versed and I started to have a severe allergic reaction to it. My throat started hurting and burning, then swelling, and my lungs started feeling like there was fluid and I couldn't breathe. Respitory came in and put me on oxygen and gave me updrafts and they couldnt clear the lungs out good enough and the Dr and anestisioligist didnt feel comfortable doing surgery on me. So the Dr said to totally quit smoking and we would reschedule in 3 weeks as long as I am not smoking.
My back is still sore from the epidural.
I was soo scared in my the pre-op room when they were getting me ready, I cried. I was worried about what if something goes wrong and all that. So maybe that allergic reaction was a sign telling me that today was not my day.

Wednesday 21st - Cindy called me from Dr Wellborn's office to tell me that St Vincents declined my surgery there, but not to worry, that if it was okay with me she wanted to move it to Baptist Hospital. She said that Dr Wellborn was not happy and was fighting it tooth and nail. She said she thinks St Vincents doesn't want to mess with Medicare/Medicais patients anymore.
So now my surgery is still on for tomorrow, Cindy faxed all my labwork and paperwork to Baptist and told me that my surgery is at 11am tomorrow and to be there at 9am. I feel really good now knowing that I have a surgeon who believes in this surgery for me.

Monday 12th - Went to St Vincents and met with Angela, a dietician. She was wonderful, she was soo happy that I knew everything already. She had a table with a bunch of different items on it, to show what items are good for after surgery.
She went over my diet schedule and everything.
Then I went to Outpatient and did my pre-admissions, they took my vitals and drew a bunch of blood. They asked a bunch of questions too and then gave me a cup to pee in on the morning of my surgery and a bottle of betaseptic soap to shower with the morning if my surgery.
Then I dropped off my xrays, echo and results from January to Dr Wellborn and they gave me my surgery date and time!!!!
               Sept. 22nd @ 10:30 AM !!!
I need to be at St. Vincents at 8:30 AM! I am soo excited!! Oh and my weight was 341.9 lbs.

Friday 9th - Went to White Co Hospital and picked everything up. They gave me ALL my xrays they had on file, since Jan 1995. I only wanted the ones from Jan 2005. Not sure what I am going to do with all of these, I figure after Dr Wellborn looks at the ones from Jan 2005 then I will bring them all back to White Co Hospital for them to keep safe for me.

Thursday 8th - Called White Co Hospital and they said I could come by tomorrow afternoon and pick up my chest xrays and results from January as well as the ECHO Cardiogram tape and results from January. Emailed Tonya and she said to bring it by the office Monday after I do all my tests at St. Vincents Hosp.
