Surgeon Testimonial

Adolfo Fernandez
I absolutely LOVE Dr. Fernandez \"Fuzz\" and his whole staff. He is very intelligent, skilled and capable but he is a REAL person. I am totally comfortable talking with him about everything. He has gone so far above and beyond the call of duty on so many occasions with me. One example was the time he called me at home on a SATURDAY MORNING to let me know some lab work I had done had come back and was normal. rnrnAnd, it's not just him...it's his whole team. They are genuinely concerned and ready to help you succeed. Their after care program is great with regular appointments for the first year. Plus, they offer a monthly support group which Fuzz, Amber (the Nutritionist) and Dr. Smith (The Psychologist) all attend. rnrnI feel very blessed to have such an awesome team within a 15 minute drive of my home.

I'm a middle-aged mom of 3 who is ready for a serious life change.  Like everyone else here, I am sick and tired of being fat.  I'm ready to live a truly abundant life.

Banded!
on May 13, 2008 1:26 pm

I am officially with the band!  My surgery was yesterday at 3:00 PM and today at 11:30 AM I was released from the hospital.  Surgery went well, and the nurses at Baptist couldn't have been sweeter.  I'm feeling pretty good....just sore from the inscisions and having a lot of gas pain.  The journey begins!

More Questions for Myself
on April 26, 2008 4:23 pm
I realize that once I "go public" with my decision to have surgery, people are going to have lots of questions.  I don't mind, because I really hope to raise awareness and dispel some myths about weight loss surgery.  Here are some of the questions I anticipate and my answers to them.

Q:  All you have to do is eat sensibly and get more exercise and you'll lose weight...why don't you just go on a diet?

A:  True...if one consumes less calories than one burns, one will lose weight.   That is a simple fact.    However, very, very few people ( < 5%) are actually able to do this successfully long term.  I have tried just about every diet there is with some short term success.  But, the weight never stays off.  I always end up putting the pounds back on and then some.

Q:  Isn't it just a lack of self-control, will-power and commitment on my part?

Maybe.  But, with a lot of help from the good Lord, I've climbed some pretty big mountains in other areas of my life and overcome other obstacles (like quitting a 10-year addiction to smoking)  that would have stopped a weak willed person dead in thier tracks.   So, I think there's probably a lot more to it than self control.  And, the latest research on weight loss confirms that there's a whole lot more involved in long term weight loss than simply eating less and moving more.

Q: Maybe you should go on "The Biggest Loser".

A:  Trust me, I seriously considered submitting an audition tape to try to be on the show.  But, then I did a little research on the winners from the first two season's shows...and guess what?  They've gained most/all of the weight back.

Q: You're a Christian.  If you had enough faith God would heal you of your obesity, right?

A:  I cannot tell you how often I have prayed that God would take this burden from me.  I believe that this surgery is His way of doing just that.  He has opened every door that had been previously closed in order for me to have this done, incuding my husband's workplace switching insurance companies to one that covers weight loss surgery.  Everything has just fallen into place in order for this surgery to happen.

I belive that God wants me to be healthy and joyful and better equipped to serve and glorify Him with my life.  I see this surgery is a gift from my Father so that He can better accomplish His purpose in my life.

My Story

I have a great life and have been richly blessed.  I have a wonderful husband, three happy, healthy kids and a dream job.  I live next door to my mom.  We have a good relationship and she is a huge help to our busy family.  We have a fantastic church home and I'm all about livin' for Jesus!  I even love the little town where I live and I really do believe that nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina!

I am so happy that, sometimes, I feel a little greedy to want to be thin, too.   Logically, though, I realize that I have allowed my weight to steal a lot of my joy.  I have been varying degrees of fat since I was in elementary school.  I don't want to bore you with the details because you probably already know the drill...tried every diet, lost a few pounds each time and then gained them back plus a few more...quit smoking and gained 30 pounds...got bigger and bigger with each pregnancy...blah, blah, blah until here I am, ready to have surgery to lose weight but win this battle once and for all.
