John Gens M.D., F.A.C.S.
He is fabulous, there is nothing about this man that I did not like. My surgery went fine and there were no complications.

My Story

I have been larger than normal since 4 but the weight really started packing on when I was in 6th grade.  I tried all the diets and my mother tried making me exercize as well as telling me that "no one would ever love me and that I would die alone" in order to get me to loose weight.

My whole family is heavy; Mom, dad, siblings, grandparents.  Their medical history is terrifying.  I was on a fast path to death.

In 2007 I learned that I had PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome).  Some doctors believe that being overweight causes the disease and others believe the disease causes the weight.  My doctor believed that the PCOS got me to where I was and she estimates that I'd acquired the disease around 12 years old.

In 2007 I decided that I would get the lap band surgery.  At that time I weight 300lbs and was ordered to loose 15lbs before the surgery.  I couldn't do it.  I wanted to do it so that I could have a baby but I just couldn't loose the weight.

In August 2009 we were placed with a foster to adopt child.  Three days after she was placed with us she turned 9.  on November 12, 2010 Nicole became a permanent part of our family.

In September 2011 we were placed with our second foster to adopt child. She is a little different from Nicole where she has alot of special needs from previous trauma.  In November 2011 she turned 9.  We are currently awaiting for her to stabilize so that we can complete adoption.

I never realized just "how big" I was until my girls wanted to do some activites this winter.  Winter in NH means snow and snow activites.  First I couldn't find winter clothes to fit me.  Then I popped a snow tube by sitting on it.  My joint wouldn't allow me to ski or ice skate therefore my children lost out because my youngest couldn't go with anyone else and it wasn't fair to let my oldest go without her.

Enough was enough, even though I went to my WLS seminar in November I didn't commit to the surgery until i saw what my weight was doing to my family.  This time I was determined to make it and I did!
