Surgeon TestimonialMonte Schwartz, M.D., FACSMy first impression was that Dr. Schwartz was very professional, and detail in his approach. This impression did not change as the process went on. His staff has continued to be very helpful as both my wife and I have had RNY procedures. The staff took a personal approach to our procedures and healing. Also, they were willing to set up multiple follow up appointments and assist in processing short term disability paperwork. They had an excellent surgery preparation seminar and support group meetings are held weekly. Dr. Schwartz helped me feel that this wasn't a \"cookie cutter\" surgery, but addressed the entire process with a personalized approach. His staff is FAB.

This is Dave's surgery update site. Jodell and I had RNY surgery in March 2007. My weight starts at my highest pre-surgery weight of 350.
Jodell now has her own profile "theshumgirl"
3 years Out-- on April 18, 2010 9:48 am
I would say I must be a "weight loss surgery success" at this point. I am just over 3 years out, and am between 205-210 lbs. At my highest weight I was just over 350 lbs. I enjoy much better health than 3 year ago.
I need to re-dedicate myself to exercise. I've had a hard time getting/staying motivated with regular training since my Oct 08 motorcycle accident and Jan 08 hip fracture. Life has been focused on trying to find some sort of work/life balance and healing at home. Losing weight at a dramatic rate and keeping it off sends other ripples through your life. It doesn't fix your problems, just tends to bring them front-and-center. Although I agree that there is a biological factor to being overweight, the psychological/emotional issues are HUGE. Some of those issues may be psychological too. The reasons why you were overweight don't go away. You have to take care of yourself before you'll be able to help take care of others.
Post-RNY is no cakewalk, and is not a decision to take lightly. It is NOT for everyone. If you get the surgery you WILL have moments when you think "what was I thinking." There is no magic pill or "fix it all." My diet and eating habits will never be that of a "normal" person. Old habits do try to work their way back into your routine. Plan on needing extended support... family, friends, religious... etc.

1 Yr 4 Mo's out on July 5, 2008 9:27 am
My weight and Jodell's have remained stable for the past several months. Long hours in the office have kept me from spending as much time as I'd like in the gym. This has slowed down my recovery from breaking my left hip in January. I am realizing I need to force the issue and make time for myself in the gym.
Life goals and directions are also changing which brings with it new life stresses. We've had so many changes in the past year and a half. Jodell and I have both lost alot of weight. I also only have one more course to complete for my MBA which is 2 months long and starts this week. My educational goals also include studying for and sitting for the CPA exams sometime in the year following graduation.
Well I guess that's it for now!

1 yr out: Life is wonderful on March 13, 2008 6:36 pm
It's hard to believe that 1 year ago, I went into surgery in an attempt to dramatically improve my health. If I had the choice, I would do it again in a heartbeat. I write this knowing that there is a chance that people may be reading this with many different perspectives. Some may be considering weight loss surgery, others may just be friends and family members accompanying me on this amazing journey.
At my highest Weight, I was just over 350 lbs. I now am weighing in at 184 lbs. That's a total loss of 166 lbs. I weighed 322 on the day of my surgery, having lost some weight leading up to surgery. As many may be aware, my wife Jodell (theshumgirl) also had surgery in March 07. We are both healthy and doing well.
This surgery doesn't solve all of your problems, but for us it's at least helped us both lose the weight, and establish more healthy relationships with food and exercise. We find ourselves able to do many things for "fun" that we wouldn't have thought to be fun before. I used to avoid exercise like it was a dirty word. Now, one year later, I can't wait to be released by my doctor to return to training for my first Sprint triathlon. We are thankful for each other and the support we've been able to provide each other through this entire process. We are both able to be more active with our kids. We are optimistic that we have extended our lifespan, and within a very short period of time dramatically improved our day to day health.

11 months out: Big Set-back-- Broken Hip on February 6, 2008 7:07 pm
A few days after my last post, on Jan 11th, I was leaving for an early morning bike ride, and my front tire slipped on some ice. Before I knew it, I had fallen on my left side, breaking my left hip. A few hours later I was in surgery having a plate and a bunch of screws permantly added to my hip. A month later, my condition is getting better, but I'm still unable to put any weight on my left leg. Per my doctor, I'm still looking at another 4-6 weeks before returning to work. Life has had to slow WAAAY down, and I'm home on short term disability. Definately a big adjustment to go from triathlon training to old man "walker" training. I only have to take pain medicine to sleep at night now, which is good.

Almost 10 months out on January 6, 2008 4:42 pm
Just wanted to write an update on how I'm doing. I'm now almost 10 months out and am doing very well. Weight wise, I've settled in to 195, which is a wonderful weight for me at my height of 6'4". Not bad considering Oct 06 I was tipping the scales at about 350. We've just survived a wonderful Christmas break, and are back into the grind.
Since Thanksgiving I've made some great improvements to my exercise routine and training. I made the decision to start training for my first Sprint Triathlon. I find it amazing that I would even consider that a possibility for me as in the past I used to avoid exercise like the plague. I just signed up for my first official event at the end of May in our community. It will be a 1KM swim, 10K bike, and 5K run. I got a road bike for Christmas which I bought from my dad for $160.00. He had it built up from the frame in the past couple months, but then came across a deal he couldn't pass up on another bike, so he passed it off to me. It is a 10 yr old frame that had been sitting after somebody bought it and never rode it. It is running well, and I just got back from a short 6 1/2 mi. ride. Training for this sprint tri has really helped me refocus on my fitness goals. With how well I'm doing now, I'm very optimistic that I won't be at the event all day trying to finish.
After taking a couple months off school (Nov and Dec) I'm now back into the final stretch to complete my MBA. I should be completed by the end of June. I just started my first Becker CPA review course, and it is pretty intense. My goal is to pass all parts of the exam and get my certification by the end of the year. This will be quite an undertaking.
Work is keeping me busy too. I've been asked to co-lead a team to help improve a process at work, which will be something new for me.
