Surgeon TestimonialRobert Quinlin, M.D.Dr. Quinlin is a very softspoken, professional man who made me feel comfortable right away. I had a list of questions for him and he didn't make me feel like I was being a nuisance in any way. His reputation proceeds him as being an excellent surgeon, so my mind is at ease being in his hands. The staff always answered questions right away and they also get back to you when they say they will. My surgery was approved in two days, which is exactly when the office worker told me that she would call me. The nutrition program is excellent! I went through a 6 month course in which they covered every aspect of aftercare from eating, exercise, vitamins, stress, sleep, and the importance of following the rules afterward. They also give you lifetime followup/care which is amazing! I would recommend anyone having this surgery in the Pittsburgh area to consider Dr. Quinlin for your surgery.

HI everyone! My name is Kris, I grew up near Pittsburgh, PA and still reside there. I am a funny and outgoing person who loves to laugh. I have a great life and do lots of things with my family and friends such as camping, concerts, dancing, movies etc... My weight is holding me back from a BETTER life though. There are many many MORE things I would like to do, but can't because of my weight and that is why I am on this WLS journey!!!

My BMI is under 50!!! on January 9, 2008 5:53 am
Yay! I hit my second goal today of having a BMI under 50!!! It just SOUNDS so much better being in the 40's...lol.... Other than that, not much to report because everything is going great. I have had no dumping or stomach problems whatsoever so far. It's early yet though, I know that for sure. I'm happy with my progress, I just have to motivate myself to exercise more. This is gonna be the biggie for me, I can tell this already. I procrastinate and keep making excuses, but it HAS to be done!!! So, I'm off to go torture my body! lol....

Finally under 300! on January 2, 2008 1:01 pm
Yessss! I am at 295 today 1/2/08. Finally under 300 and starting to exercise today. Only 5 more lbs. until my BMI is under 50! I have gone down a size in clothes and am feeling good. I can't wait to get to my next weight loss goal of 240. This was the weight I was at when I lost weight last time and I felt great! It's kind of sad to say that, but it's true! Take care everyone!

Sitting at 300! on December 22, 2007 9:57 am
Grrrrrr......I have been trying to get under 300 for 6 days now, I think I was at a stall because of not getting enough water. Now I am MAKING myself drink every last drop and have dropped 2 lbs. (I knew it!!!) Other than that, I'm feeling good, still some ab pain when I bend a lot. Pretty normal overall. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!!!

Post-Op...Whew!!! on December 10, 2007 5:22 pm
I had my surgery last Thursday, Dec. 6th. It went well and was uneventful...yay!!! The main pain I have had is the ab type pain where you feel like you waaayyyy overdid it on an ablounge machine or something...lol.... I am able to walk, do small things, go up steps and walk back to the recliner to sit my arse back down! That's about it, I'm just so glad it's over and that I'm now on the loser's bench!!!

What a biatch! on December 2, 2007 9:42 pm
Yikes, I was a total biatch to everyone this weekend doing the liquid diet thing. Wow, I didn't realize how it would mess with my hormones. I cried about 3 or 4 times over the tiniest thing too. I'm just now starting to realize that I'm never going to be able to go to a buffet and just "pig out" again. It's really sad how much I'm gonna miss the "freedom" of just eating whatever I want whenever I want. But that "freedom" is what made my body into the prison that it became, so I HAVE to let it go. It's hard, I'm not gonna lie, but I know I can do this!

My Story
I believe that my story is similar to many of you on this board. I started out as a youngster being called a "big boned" girl. A lot of kids made fun of me for being heavy, although when I look back at my pictures now I realize I wasn't that big, I just wasn't a "size 2" like most. It didn't matter because I was convinced that I was a fat pig! Anyway, growing up I played softball a lot and was very active so I guess it kept my weight under control somewhat. When I graduated High School and met my (now) husband is when I started to gain. I think I weighed around 160 at graduation, but crept upward gradually over the years by going out to eat all the time. My husband loves to eat and everything we did just revolved around having a great time with food! I always had a bit of a problem overeating as a child, but when I met my husband....WOW!!!! That's when my addiction began. That was 21 years ago and it's been a downhill slide ever since. I have a good marriage mind you. My husband is not judgemental about my weight and NEVER ONCE in 21 years made a snide comment about it. I am very lucky to have a man that is supportive and loving no matter what size I have been. And there have been many sizes/diets!!! I have lost tons of pounds over the years only to gain them back again and again. Well, I am at the end of my rope and at age 39 ready to give up my addiction and start anew so here I go...
My WLS surgery journey (12-10-07)
I have been thinking about WLS for over a year now but never thought it was an option for me because my insurance book said that it didn't cover anything having to do with weight loss. Self-pay is not an option for me because I have a son that will be going to college next year. I wanted to research it but I figured why bother since I wouldn't be able to have it anyway. This May just out of the blue one day I figured I might as well call my insurance company to check and see if they somehow changed their policy regarding weight loss. It was the best thing I ever did!!! Right away the woman on the phone told me that the RNY was a covered procedure. I started crying immediately, the floodgates just opened! I couldn't believe that after all that time of thinking I couldn't have the surgery I NEEDED, that all it took was one phonecall to find out that it WAS a covered benefit. And so it began, I visited my pcp and he recommended me to my surgeon. At the end of May I went to a seminar he was holding and I just knew that this was my path to follow. My insurance required a 6 month supervised weight loss program, psych evaluation and a bunch of pre-op testing. The surgeon's office offered a program of their own to follow for $400, it was the best money I have ever spent! They told me exactly what tests I needed and when to get them, supervised me through my nutrition/weight loss classes and all I had to to was get every result of every test faxed to their office. Then they put together a package for me and presented it to my insurance company. I was approved in TWO DAYS!!! Who could ask for anything more? So now the next chapter of my journey begins...
