Same same but different

So similiar and yet so different. I came to this site because VSG is still not a very common method in Sweden. Eventhough more and more are getting it.

I will just live with VSG for about 6 months to a year, then I will go thrugh another surgery and get either a Gastric bypass or a Duodenal Switch. My surgeon has chosen to do it in 2 steps because of my BMI. It's safer.

Well even if I am just living with this method for a short period I still wanted to know more about it. So someone told me to go here and I did.

And so much is similar to the Swedish communitys for WLS and so much is so different.

I mean I never heard of anyone in Sweden getting restrictions from their NUT when it comes to carbs. My foodplan told me that I am supposed to eat mashed potatoes twice every single day during the mushie phase. And when I start to eat normal food I am just supposed to eat what we call 1-1-1   ½ decilitre potatoes/rice or pasta, ½ decilitre meat or fish, and ½ decilitre vegetables.  And on top of that a small serving of lowfat-sauce.

And then there is one thing that is soooo different and that is all the talk of insurance. I am not used to it, because we have public health care.  I know that the questions of insurance are really important in US. I guess I just can't even imagine living in that situation.

Hi
Good luck with your sleeve. I had considered the DS, but a surgeon I know said he would not recommend that one for me personally. YOU have done your research and have found what it good for you...congrats.
I wish I did not have to deal with insurance. I was denied by my first carrier, I picked up my second carrier and now three months in the insurance person at my surgeons office says , Oh, you will need a 6 month diet. UGH>>>> Why did she not tell me that in February, when she heard what insurance I was using? I too have carried my weight for a long time, not since childhood, but quite a long time. If we had nation wide health....I would be almost ready to surgery.
As for the carbs....my doc said NO. He wants us to eat protien first, then veggies, and if we have room then fruit. The idea being we need to fill up on better calories- since our stomaches will be so small. And do our very best to stay away from: sugar. junk carbs and anything white...rice, pasta, potatoes.... Not to mention carbs are quick energy and then you crash, they don't stick with you. Oh, and many dump on sugars....and from what i have read you do NOT want to feel the dumping syndrom sensations.
Well, good luck to you and Glad you found OH!

Thank you!

well of course we are supposed to stay away from junk food here too, I am told to avoid sugar and fat since both can cause some unwanted effects.

But I wasn't aware that I could get dumping syndrome after having a VSG.

Good luck to you too!

Hi again! what did your surgeon say about a follow up surgery (a bypass type)? Mine said that many people that have the VGS never need the bypass surgery. Appearantly the part of the stomach that is removed is that part that produces the hormone (and I forget the name) that tells our brain that we're hungery. Some say that is not a permanent advantage, but everything helps as far as I'm concerned. He also said that many VSG patients become people who eat to live rather than live to eat. Anyway, I'm very excited for you and know that you will do very well!
