Surgeon Testimonial

Zane Prewitt
Initially I thought Dr. Prewitt cared, but over time I realized he just has great bedside manner. I was one of his first RNYs and retrospectively I think he wanted to practice surgery on me. I was told he had done 70 bariatric surgeries before me. I didn't realize that also included many lapbands so he had done substantially fewer RNYs. Without telling me, Dr. Prewitt gave me a very minimal RNY. He made a 50 to 70cc (2 oz.) pouch and a short bypass and he used a large stoma hole maker on me. My RNY failed immediately. I begged for help because living with the constant hunger and fluctuating blood sugars is horrible. Dr. Prewitt kept telling me everything was fine when I knew it wasn't. I mailed him my diet records with my low blood sugars highlighted. In 2007 I finally went to a GI doc for an EGD (because Dr. Prewitt didn't do one) and the GI doc diagnosed a 2.5 cm stoma. Food dumps into my intestines causing my blood sugar to rapidly raise and then fall sharply. I am constantly hungry. I never feel like food is in my pouch, but I feel bloated in my lower gut. Last night at a support group meeting a woman said she had 2 rny's. Her stoma enlarged after the first RNY and her surgeon fixed it immediately with a revision. He didn't blame her. He didn't tell her everything was alright. He diagnosed the problem and then fixed her. I have been struggling for over 5 years. Dr. Prewitt only wanted to see me 2 weeks, 3 months, 6 months post op at which point the RNY failed. He saw me a couple times after that but never did anything to help me. He did all his own follow up care but he was always very busy. I needed more follow up care in the first 6 months. He charged $270 prepaid for each dietitian visit and I couldn't aford that much cash so I followed the 1 page diet sheet I was given in the hospital. My insurance would have paid them for the visits but the appointments needed to be prepaid. After my surgery Dr. Pruwitt changed his program, changed his RNYs, hired an assistant and now offers a VSG too. I think he is a talented surgeon, but the minimal RNY is impossible for me to live with. I think he should have done an endoscopy 3 months post op and fixed me the way the other woman's surgeon fixed her rather than ignoring me until my blood sugars were imparing my life. They fluctuate from the 500s to the 20s. (I can't begin to express how bad this feels). I have to carry food and my glucose monitor with me constantly. Research by Dr. Roslin has shown that stoma size and blood sugars directly correlate. Other researchers have shown that stoma size does matter for weight loss. After 2 years of total frustration, while my blood sugar was in the 50s, I was rude to Dr. Prewitt and he dropped me as his patient. I haven't had a bariatric follow up appointment since 2008. He was very aware of my hypoglycemia and my constantly empty pouch early out. If he would only have done an endoscopy and surgically fixed my stoma immediately how different my life would have been. But he ignored me and the aggitation from my fluctuating blood sugars became so severe it eventually got the better of me and I lost it. He has moved on to be a Center of Excellence now, but I am reminded every couple hours of his decision and his surgery's failure. Unfortunately, I can't move on because I am living on this blood sugar roller coaster. Reaching my goal weight is nearly impossible with my altered anatomy. I am only trying to be overweight rather than obese. I am always hungry. I have to count carbohydrates constanly and eat frequently to try to maintain a stable blood sugar because food slides right through my system. How do I rate a surgeon that has made my life difficult to live, did minimal follow up care and destroyed my self confidence?
