Surgeon Testimonial

Michael Koeplin, M.D., F.A.C.S
Haven't met my surgeon yet, but was told he's a founder of the clinic, and one of the best they have. Was given his name at my first "real" clinic appointment Wed. 2-6-08.

So far I'm very impressed with the clinic - very friendly, huge emphasis on support systems and aftercare, willing to answer my questions.

If I had to choose between surgical competence and bedside manner ... well, both is of course preferred ... but I'd rather have an abrasive doc that is good at what s/he's doing than a nice but less than competent surgeon. I have other professionals who are paid to worry about my feelings; I want my surgeon to focus on keeping my guts in the right place.

more about me...

i run a costuming and custom sewing business from home, with sporadic customer flow.  i live in half a rented duplex with my husband, our girlfriend, all our critters, and more books, fabric, sewing machines and electronics than even the most energetic of you could shake a stick at.  i work at the MN Renaissance Festival, i'm on the board of the MN Herpetological Society (still trying to figure out a way to get a sweater to stay on a snake!), on the council of the Twin Cities Polyamorous Discussion Group, and doing some volunteer stitching for local theatres.  i go to CONvergence every year, where the poly group hosts a room party.  i'm also involved (on and off) in the local pagan and glbt communities.  i don't know what free time is.

My Story

my highest weight was june/july 2007, at 298 pounds.  that scared me.

by october 2007 (after the renaissance festival), my weight was down to 272.

december 2007, at my annual physical, i asked my doctor about weight loss surgery - she gave me a referral to the health east bariatric clinic.

january 2008, i went to the information session required by the clinic before you can make an appointment.

february 2008, i had my first appointment and "officially" started the 6 months of "structured weight loss" required by my insurance.  during those six months, i'll be going through the psych evaluations, physical therapy, nutritionist meetings, and so on that are pre-requisites for the surgery.

august 4, 2008, all my requirements are completed - psych approval, nutritionist approval, bariatrician approval.  i've lost 19 pounds on the clinic's records, and they're submitting to insurance this week!
