Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
I had always been overweight, and after two years of college, my eating habits and lack of exercise pushed me over the edge! I think I was in denial of how large I had gotten. I knew my clothing size was getting larger and larger, but it wasn't until I almost maxed out the sizes in the plus side section that I realized I had a big problem!

In October 2008 I took the first step to leading a healthy lifestyle by having weight loss surgery (Realize band). After three years, I am healthier than ever! I have lost over 120 pounds, and am playing competitive volleyball and competing in triathlons! It has been tough, and I am finding that despite my progress I have a whole new set of hurdles coming up.

My Story

I have always been the big girl, not only with regards to weight, but height being at 5'11". In high school, I was active and attributed my extra weight to my height and being "big boned". When I got to college, in 1.5 years I think I gained about 100 pounds (tough to say exactly cause I didn't make an effort to get on a scale often). I tried Weight Watchers initially, and saw a pound here and there come off, but could not control my eating habits! I decided to pursue weight loss surgery, and ended up having a Realize band procedure in October 2008. People always ask if I would do it again, or suggest other people have the surgery. The short answer is yes! I am healthier than I have ever been in my life! Not only have I lost over 120 pounds, I find that the accomplishment of losing so much weight makes me feel like I can do anything! This last summer I completed my first triathlon (and managed to get third place), this summer I plan to continue competing in triathlons, run a half marathon, and complete a century bike ride...not many people can say they have done these things, and even fewer who can say "I do these things, and I used to weigh over 300 pounds". It has been tough trying to figure out what fluid level in the band is best for me, figuring out which foods I can and can't eat, changing my lifestyle in terms of both food and activity, but I did it, and feel awesome!
