Surgeon Testimonial

Charles A. Svendsen, M.D.
My first meeting with Dr. Svendsen was great. At my surgeon's appointment he made me feel comfortable and took the time to answer all of my questions. He went over all the risks and made sure that I was well-informed. The day of surgery he stopped by to see if I had any questions. He really does have a calming presence about him.

9 Month Checkup!
on January 22, 2008 2:14 pm

I can't believe that it has been 9 months already.  The time has gone by so fast!!!  The past month has probably been one of the hardest ones of my life with 2 family members passing away within weeks of each other.  I am so very thankful that I have had this gift of WLS during this time.  With everything that has gone on, I would have eaten myself into a food coma in the past and gained many pounds, but with this tool for once in my life I have had control over something while dealing with a devasting situation.  I thank God everyday for it.

On to lighter things...I had my 9 month appointment with Dorothy yesterday and she was so encouraging letting me know how great I have done.

In 9 months I have...

...lost 132.4 pounds
...gone from a BMI of 57.6 to 36
...lost 30 inches off my waist and hips...55 off my entire body
...gone from a 26/28 to a 16
....lost 65% of my excess body weight

I am pretty happy with that and need to read those over and over if I ever catch myself not being happy with it!!

Here are some pics...

8 Months!
on December 26, 2007 8:36 am

Not a ton to report.  The weight is still coming off...down 124 pounds.  The holidays have been a bit hard with all the sweets and salty snacks around.  I feel like I have put a lot of junk into my body and the nice thing now is that my body just doen't feel right when I do that.  I am going to do a semi-liquid thing for about a week just to try and cleanse my system.  Last year I wouldn't of had the icky feeling after eating junk and I would have just keep shoveling more and more in.  This year is so different.  Once again, I am SOOO thankful I did this.

7 Months...moving right along...
on November 25, 2007 7:51 pm

I hit my 7 months back on the 20th and am 111 pounds down I have been happy with the way things have been going.  The weight loss slows down a bit, but then picks back up.  The main thing I am losing is inches.  I have gone down about 5 pants sizes and can wear XXL-XL shirts.  I REALLY, REALLY need to start working out.  I know that is the biggest thing that I am lacking.

Getting through Thanksgiving was not too bad.  I just didn't really want to eat a ton which was good.  I don't have much of an appetite and have to make myself eat, BUT I have been craving sweets and salts so I have really had to watch that.

Found out that my hemaglobin was low, which I knew because I have always been anemic.  Also, that my iron saturation is low so I have to bump up the iron.  That helped explain why I am always so tired.

Well here are some 7 month pics.  I am really starting to see the difference.

6 Months and 100 pounds!!
on October 31, 2007 9:34 pm
Well, my 6 month anniversary date was on 10/20.  I was wanting to hit 100 so bad and I weighed on that day and sure enough I was 100 down...whoo...whooo.

I went for my 6 month checkup later that week and their scale showed a 95 pound loss, but it was in middle of the day and I was fully clothed.  So as of today I am about 104 down.

I have lost 42 inches total...12 off my hips, 12 off my waist, 6 off my chest, 2 off my arms, 6 off my thighs and 4 off my calves.  So I know that if the scale moves slow or not at all, that the inches are coming off.

My iron came back low so I have to increase the amount of iron I take.  I kind of was expecting that because it has always been an issue for me.

Well, I can tell that I am really going to step up and work even harder to keep this weight loss going.  Got to kick up the activity and follow the eating plan and stay away from snacking.  I can tell now could be a time where I could fall into some bad habits and become lazy and I WILL NOT let that happen!!

Other then that I am feeling great, no problems.  I am so glad I did this!!

Here are some 6 month pics...

My Story

I have been researching WLS for a while, but seriously for about 2 years. When two of my close friends had it done, I followed them through the process and was with one of them during the whole surgery day. As they were going through their process I thought about it doing it as well, but wanted to give it one last try for myself. Prior to this I thought that having WLS was the easy way out, a giving up of sorts. That is when I started doing WW on my own and lost 65 pounds which I have since gained back and then some.

I have seen my friends grow so much, they have become so active and their confidence is at an all time high. I have learned through them that WLS is not an easy way out, they have worked their butts off to get where they are today!

My breaking point was over Memorial Day weekend 2006. I was visiting a friend in NY. If you have
ever been there you know you can do a lot of walking and going up and down tons of stairs to the subways. It was super hot that weekend too. We were walking everywhere. I could barely keep up and was so tired. No matter what shoes I wore, my feet hurt. My back, shoulders and neck hurt. I was miserable. I was sweating like crazy. So, as I was looking at knock-off purses in Chinatown it hit me. I was ready. I think that is how it happens; you just know when it is the right time for you. Now is my time.

I am at the very 1st steps of starting the WLS process. I have my nurse consult on 8/15. I can't wait. I want the day to be here, but know that this process can take time. I know it will be worth the wait.
