Surgeon Testimonial

John W. Baker M.D.
My first impression of Dr. Baker is that he truly cares about obesity as an epidemic and helping obese individuals. That impression has stayed with me both times I have met him. His staff is very friendly in person. On the phone, they seem a little eager to get OFF the phone. (I understand that, they're busy.) I don't have anything that I dislike about him so far. Future patients should know that he is no-nonsense, direct and honest. (He has beautiful blue eyes too that almost hypnotize you if you look into them while he's talking to you. It's weird - I'm not kidding.) He really puts an emphasis on aftercare, even going so far as to say that he doesn't want you for a patient if you aren't going to do the aftercare. He does have a structured aftercare program that is really supportive. He is blunt about the risks of surgery in his seminars and in all the paperwork you have to sign. I would rate him a 10 out of 10. Both surgical competence and bedside manner are great.

Feeling Okay.

Overdue updates:

HUBBY
He is still jobless, but has narrowed his search down.  At least he knows what industry he wants to work in now, so we have narrowed the search down quite a bit.  That's good.  Still living on my paycheck & his severance - so we're okay for now.

SON
He is a smartass.  I don't know where he gets that.  I hollered at him today, but he deserved it.  He has straight As in school right now and just got home from a dance.  He had fun and met his girlfriend's mom (who seemed to like him) - so that's good.  He is currently deciding whether or not he has the $$$ to go to band camp, football camp AND his friend's camp also.  (I make him pay for half of each camp cost, or I'd be paying for camp after camp after camp.)

DAUGHTER
She went to the dance tonight too - her first.  Then she left with her friend and is staying the night with her.  She has a science project due on Monday, so I hope she works on it.  If she puts it off until Sunday night, then freaks out - I think I will literally scream.  She started the "new" cheer company this week.  She liked it a lot.  It is farther away, but doable (so far).  It's cheaper too, which is always good.

ME
I went to the DR last week and my blood pressure scared him.  My blood pressure has always ran low - even when I was at my heaviest weight.  Since I have achieved a normal weight, my blood pressure has been low... TOO low.  Last week at the DR visit, it was 68 over 48.  He gave me a prescription for a steriod pill that he said would cure it no matter what was causing it - but he wanted to know what was causing it.  So he put me in the hospital (outpatient) for testing the next day.  They took my blood, then gave me a steriod shot, then took my blood every 30 minutes or so for the next few hours.  I started the steriod pill that night (after the testing so it wouldn't taint the results by starting it before).  It was... okay.  I did have a noticable appetite the first couple of days - but I watched my calories to make sure that I didn't overdo it.  Then the appetite thing seemed to go away (or maybe I got used to it or something).  But then, on the 7th day, my feet and ankles swelled up.  (They looked like hobbit feet y'all - I'm not EVEN kidding.)  Since it was one of those "call your DR" if this happens things, I called the DR the next day.  They called back, said to stop taking it and scheduled me an appointment for the next day (today).  So I went in today.  My blood pressure was 68/40 today.  The results from the hospital testing were back.  I do NOT have Addison's disease and nothing is wrong with my adrenal glands.  He said maybe I could back down to 1/2 tablet of the steriod.  I asked if I could just try the salt tablets he had suggested 6 months ago.  He agreed we could try that.  So I'm off the steriod and on salt tablets now.  So hopefully the blood pressure thing is under control now.

Hubby and I have been exercising every day - usually for an hour, but sometimes as little as 30 minutes.  It just depends.  The day before yesterday, we ran/walked 4 miles on the track.  We ran a lap, then walked a lap, then ran a lap, then walked a lap, etc.  It was NOT a good idea.  My right knee was hurting by 3.5 miles, but I wanted to go ahead and do an even 4.  Y'all know how I am with numbers, etc.  Well, by bedtime, it didn't really hurt at all.  The plantar facitis in my right foot hurt that night, but the right knee wasn't bad.  The next morning I woke up and could hardly walk on my right knee.  It was bone on bone (grinding) all over again.  So the impact of the running is too much for a ruined knee.  I should have known better.  Losing weight, no matter how much, does not UN-ruin a knee.  The knee is blown.  Being thinner doesn't change that.  Impact exercise is out.  I will have to settle for walking for exercise.  Running is NOT going to work.  Oh well.  Maybe I'll do it every once in a while even though it hurts, what do you think?  Would that really hurt anything?  Who knows.

My weight is fine - right between 125 - 130 where I want it.  I freaked out a little on the inside today when I weighed at the DR office - 132 lbs.  BUT, it was afternoon and I had been eating (and especially DRINKING) all day long.  So I'm not going to freak.

My job is as lovely as ever.  It got on my nerves last week.  But I do feel like I'm finally getting a little more organized.  I wish everyone was getting more organized and directed.  Oh well.  Good luck with that.

My mom is doing GREAT y'all.  She's lost over 80 pounds in her 1st 6 months.  People are mistaking us for each other.  She's down to a size 12/14 and looks so great.  I am SOOO proud of her.  I'm still scared for her.  (She doesn't count/journal her calories and doesn't always measure her food.  Both of those are mistakes.  But hey... some people can do that and be okay.  So here's hoping she's one of those!)
