Surgeon Testimonial

Vivek Prachand, M.D., F.A.C.S.
My first impression of Dr. Prachand was that he was extremely knowledgable. He explained everything regarding WLS going into great detail each one and helping giving me better guidance on which one would best suit me. I was not rushed and he answered all questions with no hesitation. He had a very professional understanding demeanor. The office was extremely friendly and all of my calls were returned in a timely manner. The after care program that is offered at U of C is awesome. I will post more after my surgery.rnrnMy surgery (02/12/08) was a success. I was expecting 6 lapracopic incisions and only received 3. The day of surgery was a smoothe transition. The staff alerted my family when they made the first incision and was immediate in letting them know when the surgery was complete. Dr Prachand and his staff checked on me after surgery and everyone was friendly. My follow up care thus far has been excellent and I have no complaints. I would recommend the Bariatric Clinic at U of C to anyone!!

Steady on the Grind
on October 30, 2007 6:48 pm

Greetings

My nerves have calmed quite a bit. I am now looking forward to my WLS with a smile . I am starting to feel a bit giddy about it instead of this out of the blue doom. I am now working on my wish list.. yeah u heard me right.. the big list. The one where you list all of the things you want to accomplish with your WLS. I have seen this vary on profiles with the numbers ranging from 150-10. I am going to write everything down, do some editing and whatever the number is so be it. This journey is all about yours truly.  Okay so lets talk business for a sec. I was doing some thinking and I know I have to give up my cigs and do that very soon. I did some rsearch and people generally quit 6-8 weeks before hand so I need to get on the band wagon. Also, I contacted my PCP's business office so that I can get my medical records and her statement that U of C is requesting. So a sistah is grinding heavily to make sure all is well on 11-7. I bought the book WLS for Dummies a few months ago and took a few questions from there to have ready for my surgeon when I meet him. U guys have an awesome Halloween.. this will be my last year dressed in all black with a witches hat  Next year around this time I may be a sexy she-devil.. with stilettos and all..LOL.. I will holler at you guys in November after my big day at U of C.

Keep Me Uplifted  ,
Jazzi

6 Month PCP Monitored diet (6th month back) and...
on October 23, 2007 8:30 pm
Greetings Beautiful People

Today was so hectic but the God I serve is an awesome one so I made it through. First off lets start off with the seminar. Well, it went as expected plus a few surprises. Suprises meaning that U of C (University of Chicago) does not require a liquid diet prior to the surgery  for RNY or immediately after . They start you off on phase 2 which is pureed foods straight out of surgery. I was kind of surprised at that. Before the seminar I had a chance to meet with a few people there, in total it was close to 20 of us there. We all talked for awhile about food and our addictions and bright new futures.  The presenter was running late so this pre-talk between each other was truly helpful with getting some of the unexpected jitters out of the air. The presenter was one of the surgical nurses with U of C's bariatric program. She gave us packets with information on the three surgeries they perform, explained to us what " center for excellence" meant and explained each surgery in grave detail. She was a bit stiff but very informative. One of the ladies there had her bad ass grandson there who was making all kinds of noise, being disruptive and borderline making u wanna slap him for his granny..LOL.. but other than that it was very very very helpful. I am leaning towards the RNY.. the nurse explained to us what surgery would be best for which BMI, the risks, the successes and x-y-z. We all received a 7 day meal tracker for the dietician which is mandatory to bring when we meet with the staff , when I say the staff I mean the initial appointments that are a 3 in 1 (the surgeon, the dietician, and the psychologist)  My appointment is 11-7 for all of this.. 11-07-07 now those are some lottery numbers for your ass..LOL anyways.. they told us to have a letter from our PCP and the diet documentation needed. I need to get on this ASAP to be prepared. I hope and pray that I can have my surgery done by the end of the year. I just want to close out this chapter and start anew.. if that doesn't happen I hope it would be sometime in early January so that I can start afresh .. we will see.

Moving on to my PCP check in. I gained 6 LBS which I wasn't surprised at being that my period is out of wack and I just got off my cycle so that is nothing but water weight. My PCP is excited about my journey and that makes me feel so good considering the horror stories I have heard from the boards and their run ins with non supporting PCP's.  I go back to see her 11/20 and that is my last visit. I am done.(long sigh) I just really got used to this whole pre-op thing. It's a bit scary to me that this is moving at the rate it is. I ain't gona lie to you guys either. I am scared as hell about the anesthia and possible complications but more about the anesthia. I had a bad experience with being put to sleep in the past. i was told I was going to be out for 2 hours and was out for 6. I just have to have faith that this is going to go well. I have to get on my paper work trail for U of C and get some letters from my doctor as well as a statement from her regarding WLS. I will update you guys on 11-7 and tell you all about my experience. They told me already to expect to be there for 3-4 hours.
Pray For Me ,

On The Fifth day.. Hell Broke Loose
on October 19, 2007 8:27 am
Hey Guys ,

Why does it seem the closer you get to your surgery the more hell breaks loose in your life ? I went to bed at 12:00 AM this morning.. I was knocked the hell out and slobbing on my pillow when I received a phone call. it was my mom. ( who is a foreman at a steel mill) she got hurt on her job. She was trying to run lab tests on some chemicals and the darn pipe exploded saturating her with all these chemicals. God is a good God. My mom is fine, she has burns on her hands, face and breasts.. but the burns look like a chemical peel gone a bit crazy ..... the doctors said that she is gonna have no permanent scarring just discomfort (sigh of release) then to top it off..while trying to follow her companies van to their place where they could run additional tests...A Tire on my car blew . I am just so tired right now

God is Able,
Jazz

Crunch Time
on October 18, 2007 7:43 am
Greetings Beautiful People ,

October 23rd is going to be sooo very hectic but definitely in a good way. Silly ole me forgot that I have to go to see my PCP later on that evening at 7:15P to close out month five of my diet and transition into month 6...YAY!! .. My spirits have picked up a bit as you guys can tell and I am starting to feel happy again, still indecisive but definitely happy and excited. The day is going to be something else. I made arrangements with my supervisor and will work from 6-2, the seminar is 4-6, my PCP appointment is at 7:15 ... I will take it in stride and try not to feel overwhelmed. I am going to talk to my PCP also about my concerns and then since I see her after the seminar I will be well prepared. I will update still on 10/23 and tell you guys everything and then on to 11-7 to meet with the surgeon, psych eval and dietician...Yay... keep me in your prayers guys.

Talk With You Soon,
Jazz

I have to pull it 2-gether !
on October 16, 2007 9:03 pm

Greetings All,

Okay so here we go. .. I know what the previous post was and I was seriously pondering deleting it. I chose not to because from what I hear being undecided and iffy about things is normal during this part of the journey towards WLS. I was at work today... minding my business and I get a phone call yall.. guess from who. UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO!!  I was speechless. I was so set on going down the road with Day1 Health that I gave up. I was soooo happy to hear the persons voice on the other line. I will tell you guys this. I am so in between the Lap band and the RNY right now. I just decided to keep praying on it and then present it to the surgeon which will be Dr. Vivek Prachand.  I am going to ask him which one he thinks will be best for me and tell him my pros and cons on each one. I am iffy now because I actually don't know what suits me. Moving along. Day 1 health only offered one type of surgery and University of Chicago currently offers three which include Lapband, RNY and the DS.  My insurance covers only the two I am thinking about. I was supposed to attend a seminar with Day1 health tomorrow after work but when I got the call from University of Chicago I did a quick change of plans I am scheduled to attend their seminar on 10.23.07 at 4:00 in the afternoon and then guys gues what..... I am scheduled with a three part appointment on 11/7. I meet with my surgeon, I get a psych eval and I meet with the dietician there. They told me to anticipate to be at this appointment for up to three hours. They will review my case and then decide if I am a good fit for their program and then by that time I will have my last PCP's Dr appountment and will be ready to submit to my insurance company ... newbies if u are reading this.. please hang in there and don't give up. I used to think that me getting to this point would be so far away and now look at me.. it is extremely close and I am verrrrrry emotional  and unsure of damn near everything. ... I have been thinking alot of the possibilites of not waking up from the anesthia, I have one sibling that is about to make 13,  I think about her and how she would feel if I died.( if I don't wake up), also the effect on my mom, dad (I am his only child) and friends.. never thought about this too much before. I am thinking about writing letters to them just in case.. okay off of that. I remember vaguely reading a ladies profile when I was fairly new and at this point  in her WLS journey she was looking on the memorials on here. God brought me to this so he shall bring me through it.. thats what I am going to have to keep telling myself. Oh.. I have a boyfriend you guys ..LOL  fine time to mention him when everything else is falling apart.. but truly u guys, he is my calm in the storm.. the relationship is verrry long distance and I promise details will be shared at a later date. Ok.. I will update on 10/23 when I get in from the seminar. I am getting sleepy now.
Good Night,
Jazz
