Surgeon Testimonial

Stanley Hoehn, M.D., F.A.C.S.
My first impression of my surgeon was that WOW he looks young. I had gotten really good reviews about him previously from others that he has performed surgery on and after having him as my surgeon I completely understand why the good reviews. My first visit was with him was brief but I guess since I didnt have many questions we had a quick visit. One thing that happened I was not expecting was how quickly my surgery date was set. I expected to have a surgery date 4-6 weeks out from my initial consult but my surgery was scheduled 2 weeks from my initial consult....talk about being excited and nervous at the same time. My surgery itself went very smoothly, I was shocked and pleased at what little pain I had after the surgery. I originally thought that Dr. Hoehn didnt see me anymore after the surgery prior to me being released but come to find out he did check on me in PACU....I was just still a little out of it so I didn't remember. The nurses did call to check on me the next day to see how I was doing and emphasized aftercare. Now I originally said I thought Dr. Hoehn's bedside manner didnt seem very warming but that has completely changed and let me explain why. On my first post op visit Dr Hoehn mentioned that he was informed about what I posted on OH board and he informed me that he did check on me and I probably just didnt remember. He took the moment to personally make me aware that he cares for all of his patients. I was surprised that either him or the nursing staff even takes the time to read their patients posting, but they do.....and I must say that is quite refreshing...not only do they genuinely care about how their patients view them but if there is a concern they make sure it is addressed so the patient does not have any further concerns. I think that is wonderful! A Doctor and office staff that really cares about how their patients feel is something you dont see a lot of anymore. I would have to say his surgical competence is excellent.....I went into sugery at 9:30 a.m. and was home by noon with hardly any pain. I would definitely recommend him to others because there is no doubt he is good at what he does, very efficient, ginuine and caring. He also comes with a wonderful nursing staff...they are all GREAT! Thanks all of you at the office for taking the time to care....

Well I have finally done it....I had lap band surgery.  My surgery date was Jan. 3, 2007.  What a way to start the new year!!!!!!  I went into the hospital 8:00 Wednesday morning for a surgery scheduled at 9:30 and I was back home by noon.   I was quite surprised.....I wasnt hardly in any pain and didnt have to use any of the morphine drip they had ready for me.  My hubby was at the hospital with me and he has been so supportive throughout my journey thus far and I love em to death for it.  I have to say I am excited and scared all at the same time but at least I am on my way to the new me!!!

July 26th, 2007....A Goal Reached!!!
on July 26, 2007 1:07 pm
Ok..so I already know I am horrible about keeping this updated....but my 6 months anniversary has come and gone and I am ecstatic to say I have surpassed my 50lb goal..I am now down 54lbs since the band and 87lbs since my highest weight of 325....amazing.  This summer has flown by and I have gotten a littlle off track I have to admit but somehow still managed to lose a few lbs in the process..I plan on getting completely back on track in the upcoming weeks..I may be going on a cruise the end of September and wearing a size 14 would be a great gift to myself..I am currently in a size 16 which is still unbelivable to me but I am getting used to it :-).  The compliments are forthcoming and encouraging....I think others in my family and friends group are more amazed at how well the band has worked for me than I am..lol.  I need to upload some before and after pics so they will be forth coming.

Well I am down another 4lbs to 254.....getting closer and closer to my goal.  I ended up postponing my last appt. to receive a fill b/c I felt pretty effective restriction....I think it may have had something to do with my daughter being hospitalized and all the stress I was under.  I am scheduled to go in on Friday the 18th and I think I will get that appt.  Hubby is doing very well..he is down like 15lbs in one week....how unfair is that...lol he is amazed how the weight is melting away.  I must say him having the surgery has helped me to get on a more strict  tract..I have a goal to reach and now more than ever need to get there.  I think I will go out and try some 16's this weekend.....hard to believe I know.  I will be starting a new job in a little over a week of which I am very excited but I have no clothes to wear to work so I need to go buy at least something to get started.  I don't want to purchase too much but I can't go without purchasing something this is the part I guess that sucks...buying clothes and then not being able to wear them the following month..seems like such a waste.  but hey I wouldn't change it.:-) oh well it's been a long day and I am tired so I am calling it a night.  Will post more later.

May 9th, 2007 What A DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
on May 9, 2007 9:56 pm

Well I have to say today was very interesting.....first let me start by giving a little history.  Since my last post my daughter became ill with what we originally thought was a virus of some sort b/c she had diarrhea, high fever and vomiting..I took her into emergency twice during the week of the May1st-5th and each time they sent us home saying it was a virus that needed to run its course..she started running the fever on Sunday April 30th and I took her in the first time on Monday May 1st, then again on Wednesday May 3rd.  Finally Friday the 5th after almost of week and no improvement in her condition they did additional testing and learned she had a pretty bad kidney infection.  You can imagine how upset I was since they really should have caught it one of the first two times we went in....however Im just glad they finally caught it.  She had to be admitted to the hospital on May 5th....we hoped to be out by her 3rd birthday but no such luck...she had to spend her 3rd birthday on the 8th in the hospital.  That makes 2 out of 3 birthdays she has been hospitalized. She was in the hospital on her 1st birthday, home for her 2nd and in the hospital for her 3rd.  In the midst of being worried about her my husband was also scheduled to have the lap band surgery today on the 9th...as things turned out my daughter was released from the hospital and my husband surgery went smoothly and I got to bring both my babies home today....it was a hectic day but we are SO GLAD to all be home.  Hubby is doing nicely...sort of like I was on surgery day but we will see how he is doing tomorrow....my pain hit then so we'll see if he has the same problem.  Dr. Hoehn performed his surgery as well...he is a great dr.  Now about my ongoing weight loss.. in my last post I was excited to purchase size 18...well within that short period of time it seems my 18's are already becoming loose.  I still have good restriction from my last fill so I think I will cancel my appt for the 11th to get another fill.  I must see since all of the stress with my daughter has hit it seems my band has gotten even tighter..I have heard of bands getting tighter during stressful times but it had never been like like this.  I really have hardly had any appetite and have had to force myself to eat.  Im down to 258 so goodbye to the 260's and hello 250's FINALLY..YEAH!!!  Who knows I may be able to squeeze into some 16's already....SOME amazing NSV"s ..I am smaller now than on my wedding day and my first year anniversary.  I have started telling more family members, especially now that hubby is a bandster.  It's weird that since surgery date I am down 34 lbs but have gone from a tight 24 a size loose 18 almost 16..amazing.  I have really kicked up my exercise which I am finally proud to say..what it only took me 3 months and hitting a weight loss plateau to figure out I needed to get with it.  I do turbo jam twice a day4-5 days a week..in the mornings I do resistance training with a exercise tube and evenings do cardio...so far it's working out well and I am enjoying it.  My knee problems have almost gone completely away which make exercising so much easier.  I keep joking with my hubby that he'll probaby lose more weight in his first month of being banded than I have 4 months out...LOL..he BETTER NOT....but we all know men lose weight faster than women, after all he dropped like 80lbs prior to surgery on his own in like a 6 month period of time....how amazing is that.  Well I think I have posted plenty for now so I will end this but will post more updates soon.  Thank You Lord Jesus for all you continue to  bless my beautiful family  with and I am so thankful for the blessings you have continued to bestow upon us and the mercy and grace you have seen us through these recent times with.  I pray you continue to watch over my family and keep us safe and healthy.....to all that don't know...PRAYER WORKS.

APRIL 27, 2007....IT'S SAD BUT ONCE AGAIN...
on April 27, 2007 9:29 pm

Once again it's been over a month since I've updated.....it's sad to say......a lot of things have been going on some good some not so good......my daughter recently had to be hospitalized for problems with her asthma...try keeping a 2 yr old held up in a hospital room for a week and see how that works for you.  We did not expect to be in there that long but I think it was torture for both of us.  Boy was she ever glad to see outside again.  The worst part about it was she did not want me to leave her sight!!!!!!.. My weight loss has been sparse for the last month...I have had two fills since my last update for a total of 4 fills totaling 3cc in my band......It seems I have been losing and gaining the same 5 lbs again however I can now fit into an 18 comfortably so something must be going on..now lets move on to 16's.  I've just decided that the scale is not my friend.  I have had more pb'ing episodes than I care to admit...mainly from not chewing my food well enough so with the extra restriction I really have to make myself chew chew chew and the chew some more.  My husband is scheduled to become a member of the band family on May 9th.....he will probably surpass my weight loss within his first month..lol..sad but true.  I am still happy that I have my band...I will be needing to put more effort into it than I have thus far if I want to get the results Im after.

My Story

Well here I am 30 yrs old and would finally like to be done with my weight issues.  I have basically struggled with my weight the majority of my life but I was able to manage it with diet and exercise until I got to college.  I have been able to lose weight several times but never permanently. I have considered WLS for quite sometime now probably on and off for 3 years but I would never completely go through everything b/c my insurance always had an exclusion clause denying bariatric surgeries of any kind.  Then in March of 2006 my husband started a new job and a couple of months after that in May he mentioned to me that he had spoken with a young lady that had bariatric surgery (RNY) and that the jobs insurance had covered everything at 100%.  She sent me the doctors name and number that she'd gone through and I went to a seminar in July and new that I wanted to pursue the lap band surgery.  For me the process of getting approved was not as difficult as some the stories I've read and heard.  I got all of my paper work together and submitted it by August 8th 2006.  The only requirements that my insurance had were approval from a psychologist and meeting with a dietician.  I didnt have to have months of supervised dieting etc.....I was approved wit,h the first letter submitted !!YEAH!!!  I was worried that I wouldn't be since I did not have a lot of comorbidities.  I have some joint and back and knee pain due to my weight...along with some depression but no hypertension, sleep apnea or diabetes or anything like that.  It took some time to get my psych evals and dietician meeting requirement done b/c they stay really booked up..but by mid December I had a surgery date of Jan 3, 2007.  I started dieting on my own on September 12, 2006 with the help of two great Aunts I was able to drop 47lbs by December!!!!...that made me feel pretty good but of course my next question to myself was if I can do that then why not continue doing what Im doing and I wont need surgery.  My aunts and other family members tried to convince me that I could keep up the weight loss on my own....even the pscychologist was impressed.  But the more I thought about it I have been dieting alll my life and I always started off well but 4 to 5 months into it I would fall off the wagon and then before I know it I have gained all I've lost and then some...yes the infamous yo-yo dieter I am here.  So in making the decision to move forward with the lap band I knew it was the right one.  My starting weight in September 2006 which was also my highest was 325lbs I am 5'10 tall so people are always surprised when they learn how much I weigh b/c I dont look it due to my height....but believe me I feel it.....by december 14th 2006 I was down to 278lbs....On December 20th, 2006 when I got my surgery date....all bets were off....I decided to enjoy what I wanted for the next 2 weeks.  Perfect timing with it being right near the holidays...so I ate what I wanted when I wanted.  within one week I had gained 7 lbs and was back up to 285 so I decided I'd better cool b/c the doctor told me not to pile on weight right before surgery and that is exactly what I was doing.  I weighed myself the morning of surgery and I was 287lbs another 2lbs gained and  the morning after surgery I was 292....6lbs gained from surgery. but I am on the right track now.  I have  wonderful husband and two yr old daughter both whom mean the world to me and I dont want my daughter to grow up with a fat mother....I want more energy to play with her and I want another child but not at this weight....my daughter was born prematurely at 6 months (24 weeks) she weighed 1lb 6oz  but she was a fighter and survived my little miracle baby, maybe it had something to do with her initials Taylor Nichole Thomas (TNT)....no I know that it was the Lord and lots of prayer that saw her through.  Imagine how devastated I was to learn that my weight could have contributed to my daughter having the struggle of her life...in addition they say once you've had a pre-term baby your risk of having another preterm birth increases by 40% WOW.....so I knew I needed to give my next child the best possible birthing conditions I could.....which is another reason why I know I am making the right decision with the lap band......I know there are many others out there that have family or friends that dont agree with their decision to have surgery but when it comes down to it it is your quality of life that will be changing....it is you that has lived through depression due to weight, societies stereotypes of obese people, not loving yourself because of how you look, low self esteem etc....so it has to be you that makes the decision to do something about it....and you and only you knows your strengths and weaknesses so you have to do what is right for you. Anyway I am thrilled I have started my journey and I can't wait to be on the losing side!!!!!
