I should be studying right now...

Jan 16, 2017

First Day of Couch to 5k. I'm using the RunDouble app.

I only managed 7 out of the 8 running intervals but I think I did good. My running speed was 5.2 mph which I think is good but to slow for my stride. I have long legs and I kept having to shorten my steps on the treadmill and running into the front bar. It felt awkward. But I’m afraid to go too fast and fall off the back.

Anyway, I think I will keep repeating the first week until it gets easy before I move on to week 2. I don’t care how long it takes to get to the end as long as I do get to the end.

Starting next week, when the semester starts, I will be starting to do Kettlebell classes on the same days as I do C25k . I know that seems like a lot but I plan to do them 2.5 hours apart (between classes). I really want and need to get stronger as well as build my cardiovascular stamina.

As for the cigarettes, I don’t really have any cravings when I’m at home, I’ve never smoked inside my home, but I’m used to smoking whenever I walk the dog, or to the coffee shop, or walking anywhere really. I just had a really strong craving while walking to the coffee shop and was tempted to walk to the gas station which is only one block farther but I resisted.

School is going to be hard because I’m used to smoking between classes (they haven’t banned it on my campus yet) and when I need a break from studying. I’ve decided I will take walks when I need a break even if it means I have to pack everything up then unpack again when I'm at the coffee shop.

I’ll probably post again tonight but signing off for now.

I think I accidentally replaced my first blog post

Jan 15, 2017

So let’s review:

  • Sugar cleans/soft food diet went well. I’m not craving the sugar and carbs nearly as much now and my stomach does seem to be a little more sensitive to how much I put in it. I’m back to regular foods. Protein First!
  • I’ve tracked my food/water/exercise with My Fitness Pal every day and been under my calorie goal every day. I’m set at the lose 1.5 lbs per week level. Again, I’m firstqueen on My Fitness Pal.
  • Been weighing myself every day. The weight fluctuations are actually kind of fun (I gained 4 lbs one day and lost 5 lbs the next) as long as there is a general downward trend. So far, I’m at about a 3 lbs loss since I started.
  • Been walking the dog that full mile every morning that I didn’t have an incredibly early appointment. The Fitbit likes that.
  • So, because of my cold I didn’t do the C25k but I did go to the gym and do 45 min of “rolling hills” on the treadmill. I am mostly better so I will be starting over with C25k tomorrow.
  • Well the blogging/journaling every day hasn’t quite gelled yet, I’m not sure if I should adjust my goal to ‘at least once a week’ or if I should keep trying to write every day. What do you think?
  • I went to my surgeon’s support group meeting yesterday and I’m so glad I did. I got there in time to catch most of the pre-op class about what to do, how things will go, etc. Man was it good to revisit all the basics. I’m definitely going next month, maybe I’ll even catch the class again to help me really keep my head in the game.
  • I am going to call and make an appointment with my surgeon on Tuesday, since Monday’s a holiday.

New orders of business:

  • I quit smoking 2 days ago, and I’m doing alright so far. I know, I know, I never should have started again after quitting for the surgery but I did. I’ve stopped smoking on several occasions for various reasons over the years but this is the first time I’ve really decided to do it for myself. I’ve never really had trouble kicking the physical addiction it’s always, and still is, the situational and habit part. Also, I just really like it. But for some reason I feel like I’m ready to stop now, when I wasn’t before. I’m using an app on my phone to help me track the cravings and things like how much money I’m saving, not sure it’s helping but it’s something.
  • I’ve cut off my coffee intake at 4pm after that it’s all herbal tea all the time.
  • I have a new goal, walk a few hundred steps every time the Fitbit tells me to. It prompts me to take 250 steps every hour but I’ve been ignoring it because I’ve been studying at the coffee shop. I think there are a few regulars I trust to watch my stuff (they do when I go to the bathroom) while I take a turn around the block. We’ll have to see how trusting I feel. Maybe they’ll let me put my laptop behind the counter.

It’s late so signing off for now.

I'm getting sick... Also thoughts on eating back exercise cals.

Jan 09, 2017

Welp, 2 hours in to my 5-hour study session I felt it; the tickle in the back of my throat, then came the runny nose, then the cough. Its official I have a cold. But I won’t let this get me down. I went to the gym today so tomorrow is a rest day anyway. All I need to do tomorrow is study. I have one chapter and three lecture videos to watch before the exam on Wednesday. I can totally do this. I’m sure the other patrons at the coffee shop will appreciate my coughing and sniffling.

On an up note I switched from coffee to herbal tea (no sugar) when I started to feel bad so my “water” intake doubled (I still drank about 48 oz. of plain water). Also, I’ve not really had the urge to comfort myself with food so that’s a plus. I’m totally within my calorie budget for the day.

I’ve decided not to eat back my exercise calories. I’ve read that people tend to over-estimate how much they burn. I’m not sure I trust my Fitbit’s calculations so I’ll just stick to the basic recomended calories to loss 1.5 lbs. pper week. What do you think?
