Joseph Kamelgard

"I met Dr Kamelgard in July 2002. The consult was long and I knew most of everything he spoke about but it was still a good chance to see him and get an idea of what his expectations are. He spoke of all the risks in depth. He was a bit intimidating at the consult but I got over it. Everyone always commends him on his good bedside manner and I'd have to agree. He visits twice a day...in the early morning and afternoon. I wasn't nervous at all going in for surgery and I had no reason to be... ***UPDATE***Since surgery I have met with Dr. K 3 times and I must say he is very supportive & encouraging. I must admit to being very afraid of him as a pre-op. Even the day of surgery I warned my family that he wasn't "nice" and to try and be openminded. The first time I saw him as almost human was when I was lying on the operating table and he was asking me questions before surgery. In the hospital he was great and as a post-op he's even better. "

University Hospital

"The first night I was nauseated and asked several times for something. I never got it. When the resident ordered it the next morning it took over an hour to get it. The second night my IV and morphine ran out at the same time. I called the nurse's station and it took the nurse over an hour to come to me. By then I felt like I was burning up and I was having trouble breathing-all congested. When I told her about being hot it took her almost 45 minutes to take my temperature, which was 101.8 (and I don't get fevers!). She said it wasn't high enough to give me Tylenol but she would anyway. She never did!!! She didn't give me my blood thinner and I was too out of it to notice. My roommate reminded me I didn't get it. I had to ask her for it and got it 2 hours late. From the 2 blood thinner injections she gave me during her shift I got 2 baseball size bruises that I can still see (now 5 weeks post op). She barely spoke English and was extremely rude. Turns out I was getting an overdose of morphine-she didn't know how to regulate the machine. The day nurses were good the first 3 days. The 3rd night I had a great nurse. She was wonderful. She was an ER nurse. The day I was being discharged the nurse was rude. She made comments about me being too young (26) for WLS and that she is going to try dieting first. I asked her for pain meds (the 3rd morning I was put on Tylenol with codeine elixer b/c of the morphine overdose) and she forgot. I asked her again 90 minutes later and she even admitted forgetting!!! She was slow & too rough...All in all I hated the hospital experience. I couldn't get any sleep because all kinds of staff came into my room to get gloves and wash their hands 24/7. It was a truly awful experience. "
