Hi Amanda, So, you're almost there! I am very proud of you for having this life changing surgery. We all get scared now and then and feel very strong and determined at other times. I thought seriously about backing out once and my AMOS family pulled me back and saved the day. I'll always love them for that. Now I am nervous but not really scared and am determined to do it. I have found that in trying to help others by posting to their surgery pages, I have found even more strength within myself. You can do this!!! I'll be saying a prayer for you and your surgeon. HUGS! Amanda, I had to write you! I had my open RNY last Monday Oct. 28th. I was scared of the same things you were. Everything turned out fine, and it will for you too. Go in with a positive attitude and pray for calmness as all will turn out great. Best of luck to you!

Hi Amanda, saw your post and wanted to reply... my surg is the 12th and I know the feelings you are going thru ...but...I wanted to tell you that show on TLC last night wasn't very accurate...although complications or not they said they would do it again... my dr. requires us to go to monthly semanars and the 1st visit with him is also a seminar with about 10 prospective patience the dr does the seminar and explains the procedure beginning to end and answers all questions...he is never rushing thru things...then a few weeks before surgery we have a 3 hour class we HAVE to go to, 1hour is a psycho. speaker then 1hour is the dietion, then 1hour is his surgical nurse that has had the surg. also she explains what you will go thru after surgery...she explains the drains and what they are for and when they come out...nothing is a surprise...also explains some of the more common complications and how they are handled... So I feel I am very well informed and have had plenty of time to be sure... yes last night I had a case of the nerves...it happens to most of us...I am anxious also... stay positive and busy, time will pass faster...I hope some of this helps...I'll be praying for you... {{{HUGS}} Kathy

Oh, two more things, Use pure cocoa butter to soften your incision and make it go away faster (just for appearances) and PRAY that God will show you you have made the right decision and will comfort you and hold you in his hand. If he decides it is your time, you could go in an accident on the way to the hospital. There is nothing you can do.

Amanda, I know how you feel about the surgery and complications. I have a 6 and 4 year old (girls) and a 15 month boy. I KNEW I had to have this surgery, but I was SO scared for them! Well, I said I would do everything I could to prepare and leave the rest to doc and God. I ate LOTS of protein for the couple of weeks prior. Anytime I was hungry, I ate protein. Just cooked roasts so I could pick at them when hungry (chicken, pork, beef). I also lost 21 pounds, which helps with the surgeon being able to get around in their and it "tightens" up your liver, which is blobby and fatty if you are obese. Then I made sure my intestines were squeaky clean to prevent infection. I went on fluids 2 days before and used the really strong diruetic for 2 days. BE sure to drink TONS of water too! That will help to prevent a urinary tract infection and kidney complications (because the stuff that makes you have diarrhea and clean out your intestines is sucking water from your kidneys to your intestines and your kidneys NEED water to work). Then, WALK WALK WALK after surgery. Cough and breathe. Get out of the hospital as soon as you are able so you are not at risk of getting a staph infection there. Clean your incision and LISTEN to your doc! DO NOT eat prohibited foods. Your stomach needs to heal and you do not want a leak. (I chewed and spit out when the urge was too strong) If you go home with a feeding tube, USE IT! Put water in it many times a day -- you need water, put your medicine in that way, push your protein drink through it. Take you vitamins. I am only 7 weeks out but am doing great, no complications so far. I do miss food and I still have my cooking obsession, but the people at work are enjoying that. Feel free to contact me with questions.

Amanda, Best of wishes to you as you prepare yourself to join the losing side. Scary thoughts do seem to happen more prior to any form of surgery. One sure way to help prevent blood clots is to get up and walk each time that you can!! The more movement that you have the better your chances are for prevention. I know what you mean about the WLS stories. As many people that have experienced the positive you would think that they could find more suitable interviews! God speed. KimmieTN

AMANDA~~ WELCOME TO THE AMOS MESSAGE BOARD~~ It's common to be scared. I had complications, but I made it through it. And I'm glad that I did it! Focus on the "why" that made you decide to have the surgery.... Keep yourself busy.... give support and encouragement to others.... Keep a positive attitude. ~~BEST WISHES ON YOUR WLS JOURNEY~~ May the world hug you today with its warmth, and love..... Pray it whispers a joyful tune in your heart..... And may the wind carry a voice that tells you there is a friend sitting in another corner of the world wishing you well!
