It has been a little over a year since I had my gastric bypass surgery. It has been a very eventful year. I have had to learn how to eat all over again. For instance, I cannot eat steak, which I love. I have had to learn how to portion my foods so I can have a taste of everything. I am learnng about skin care. Older skin needs special care and lots of lotions, oils and creams. But the most eventful things have been to buy clothes in a smaller size. I was a size 24 and now I am a size 14-16. I have lost 100 pounds. I feel wonderful. My back pain is easing up; however, I have had epidural steroid injections to help with that. I have had a knee replacement in April so now I can walk for a long while and not hurt. I look in the mirror and it's hard to recognize me sometimes. Most times though, I still see a fat lady. But I am not fat any longer. I guess it's a psychological thing, I had been fat for so long and now I'm not, and it's hard to switch those feelings. I still feel self-conscious whenever I walk into a restaurant. I am amazed when walking down a hallway somewhere I don't have to turn to the side when I meet someone coming from the opposite direction. I love the new me. I'm so glad I had this operation, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. It was the right decision for me. And, my surgeon was very good also. He told me on one of my visits that he was really pushing it with me as I had had so many serious things wrong with me that were not related to the obesity, and my age. But he went with his gut feeling and I'm so glad he did. I have had absolutely zero complications. Granted, I did my share of throwing up at the beginning, but this was all part of the learning process. I really cannot say enough good things about Dr. Naaman. I have met only one other surgeon like him, and that was my breast surgeon for the cancer. Dr. Naaman is an accomplished photographer and has his work hanging in his exam rooms. He will explain about the pictures and why he took that particular one. He's very modest about this talent. I thank God for Dr. Naaman and the gastric bypass procedure for obesity.
