Can't eat just one

Nov 01, 2014

I have been a lifelong chocoholic, self-confessed, no denying it. That t-shirt that says "Hand over the chocolate & no one gets hurt" yeah that's probably inspired by me. This is old news. What isn't old news is what happened the past 2 weeks.

Two weeks ago I made up a shopping list & hit Costco. As I was walking down the 1st cold case aisle looking for yogurt I remembered reading someone's post about having a cheese stick wrapped in turkey or some other sliced meat. I thought that would be a good habit to get into so I picked up a CheeseHead (60 count)cheese stick package & put it in my cart. Looked innocent enough there by my cans of tuna, but appearances are deceptive.

I have been eating these things like potato chips! I'm not joking, my FitBit confirms it. I logged on & showed my food log to my BT on Thursday. My sodium intake numbers are back up in the mid 3000's. Although I haven't gained any weight I had hoped I'd drop a few pounds so I can change my weight tracker after walking more. I told my BT that if not for my FitBit I wouldn't have realized what I've been doing. I'm VERY visual so seeing all of those "1 cheese stick" entries piled up at the end of the day shocked me. I knew my FitBit would give me an incentive to walk more each day as I saw the numbers, but logging my food has been another great way to stay on track. The ease of grabbing a couple of these sticks to eat while I'm doing something else is too tempting.

I don't know if I'll ever buy them again. Too much of a "good thing" is still too much.

My daughter just sent me a text that her website is up. She's had 2 pieces published and now there's a way for people to find those & her future work.

Dancing as I get ready for my therapist appointment at 3.

Because I like researching

Oct 22, 2014

I had seen someone post results like this & was curious to see what my results would be from

the Ideal Weight Calculator.

WOMAN   53 6'1"

Based on the Robinson formula (1983), your ideal weight is 156.7 lbs
Based on the Miller formula (1983), your ideal weight is 156.0 lbs
Based on the Devine formula (1974), your ideal weight is 166.2 lbs
Based on the Hamwi formula (1964), your ideal weight is 163.4 lbs
*Based on the healthy BMI recommendation, your recommended weight is 140.2 lbs - 189.5 lbs

MAN   53 6'1"

Based on the Robinson formula (1983), your ideal weight is 169.1 lbs
Based on the Miller formula (1983), your ideal weight is 156.0 lbs
Based on the Devine formula (1974), your ideal weight is 164.3 lbs
Based on the Hamwi formula (1964), your ideal weight is 176.1 lbs
*Based on the healthy BMI recommendation, your recommended weight is 140.2 lbs - 189.5 lbs

It'll be interesting to look back at this in a few years to see where I am compared this information. I've weighed 160-170lbs & know that 185-195 is a good weight for me, which is why I'm aiming for 195. I used to wear men's jeans 34x36 or 36x36, depending on the cut. I don't know if I'll be able to wear the same sizes with left over skin, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Great day ... yesterday

Oct 17, 2014

This is a reconstruction of my lost blog post from last night ~

Went to my 1st appointment with my Behavioral Therapist. We’d met on the 6th when my PCP invited her in to meet me during that appointment. As soon as we were settled in her office yesterday we got right into it. I gave her an overview of my history, told her about my current therapist, & we arranged releases so both women can communicate with each other as we work together. I’ve never been to a BT so this is all new, but I like the angle she’s taking approaching my issues. I feel supported by everyone I’ve met so far which is a nice change from tackling my weight & the reasons behind it all alone.

After my appointment my daughter called to wish me happy birthday. I told her how my 1st session went, that I weighed on the scales leaving the clinic & I've lost another 10lbs since the 6th! That's 14 total in 4 weeks. She was so excited for me. Then she brought me up to date on her recent news. She’s a junior in college, working her 1st internship, & Monday is a big day for her. The 1st author she helped schedule to speak on her campus is arriving. She’s to introduce him to the audience, help with the behind the scenes until he concludes his talk, then everyone is going out to dinner to celebrate. She told me they’re going to a “fancy” Greek restaurant where they don’t put prices on the menu. That’ll be a treat since I’ve never taken her to a restaurant that didn’t bother you with the details of your meal until you paid. lol One of the professors was so impressed with her work on the group’s FB page he’s buying her dessert. That’s nice, but she’s also keeping tear sheets of all her work for her portfolio. Earlier in the week another of her writing professors asked permission to use 2 of her published pieces in his creative writing class. Of course she gave him permission. (She was published last summer in 2 literary arts magazines. I’m so proud of her.)

After we hung up my sister called so I went over everything from my appointment with her. She’s so supportive. I was surprised to find out she has 2 friends who’ve had WLS. One was 300lbs and is maintaining at 130lbs 2 years out from her surgery. The other woman was 800lbs & is down to 300 now. I don’t know how long ago her surgery was, but losing 500lbs is damned impressive however long she’s been working to get healthy.

My sister wants us to plan a trip somewhere to celebrate when I reach my goal. That gives us a few years to plan & save up to make it happen. We used to walk everywhere together growing up, then all over NYC when we were nannies in our 20’s. We thought nothing of walking nonstop for hours as we explored the city. Maybe we’ll even take our daughters & “walk their legs off” wherever we end up.

Being able to do that again seems like a dream, but I’m determined to make it come true.

Compassion

Oct 11, 2014

“Have compassion for everyone you meet, even if they don't want it. What appears bad manners, an ill temper or cynicism is always a sign of things no ears have heard, no eyes have seen. You do not know what wars are going on down there where the spirit meets the bone.”  ― Miller Williams

1 down 3 to go

Oct 09, 2014

Went to the first of my 4 scheduled appointments since I saw my PCP last week. Kayla's my nurse & went over all of the info about my diagnosis of diabetes. Labs done last week showed my BS at 6.8. We discussed food choices, then agreed I'm going to begin a modified Atkins diet because I've had good luck with it. I used to carry the Glycemic Index book around with me so I could make better choices. Told her about Fit Day tracking so I can print out what I've been eating & share it with "my team".

Next week I'm to see my Behavioral Therapist. I met her last week when my Dr invited her in during my appointment. Never been to a BT so this will be a new experience for me.

Beginning

Oct 09, 2014

I dieted my way up to this weight striving for just the opposite of my results. I can lose weight - 20/40/60lbs - BUT I have always put it back on, with interest. My failures not only add to my health problems, but contribute to my depression & feelings of failure.

I have a great PCP, she's fought my insurance for me before when they denied me particular medicines. I know she's going to fight for me to have the surgery that will save my life. I can only repay her by doing my part to make all our efforts worth it.
