Celebrating Diabetes Awareness Month and 14 Months from RNY

Nov 08, 2012

Well, I've had my gall bladder out about 2 weeks ago by the same surgeon and am healing up fairly well.  I went from having chronic constipation to the opposite, but I know that will settle itself down in time.

As a Type 1.5 diabetic, my blood sugars have been all over the place in the past 2 weeks, but are finally settling down.  I know it's the bodily stress of surgery and all I was able to do was watch, adjust and wait it all out.  One day my blood sugar went from 45 to 401 in about 4 hours - that was no fun.  But, it's really funny to me how the numbers of my glucometer eventually settle down and find their stride again.  That is a real blessing, albeit temporarily frustrating.

My weight is down 81 pounds from the day of surgery in September 2011, and I've lost 44.5 inches from my chest, waist, hips and both thighs combined (that's all I measure).  My hips are now smaller than my former waist size - that really kind of blows me away when I think about it.

I can't stress enough how important it is to work at all of this on a daily basis.  I was fortunate, in some ways, that I was never an overeater.  I just had a totally screwed up metabolism with Type 1.5 diabetes and lifelong PCOS.  The RNY has helped so much in giving me the tools to get results.  But, there is no break from it - it's an every day, every meal, every snack kind of diligence that is keeping me alive and, so far, complication free.  I know that, after 26 years as a diabetic, that is a huge blessing.  If you are diabetic, you know what I mean.

This is National Diabetes Month, so just remember to take care of yourselves and learn to be your own best advocate.  You can't educate yourself enough.  I am still trying to learn new things - I have to.

Last thing - I've received several private messages from those of you who are diabetics and stumbled upon my blog.  I'm always very happy to start a conversation with anyone, particularly those of you out there how can't find Type 1 diabetics to share experience.  If there is anything I can answer or share, please contact me below or via private message.  We have to look out for each other, right!
