Hi All: I went back to work today. I have a few pains when using my stomach muscles to sit down or stand up. Other than that, I think I'm doing great. I need to add some data to a post above. I had three simultaneous surgeries: hiatal hernia repair, stomach tumor removed, and then the gastric bypass. These were all planned to be done together and were not complications of each other. My only 'complication' was the leaking of the belly button cut, which made me not want to walk (aside from leaving a trail every where I walked). Then, not walking led to the temperature.

When I woke up, I had the "hey I'm alive" feeling. Then the "Oh my God, what have I done" feeling kicked in. They wanted me up and walking and as well I should. But with a catheter, IV, and butt flapping to the wind, well, it wasn't an easy feat. Then when I bent over to unplug the IV, my belly button wound shot out a water/blood fluid and I left a trail. The first night, I had to have me and my bedding completely changed three times. I could hold a towel to my stomach in one hand, and push my IV pole with the other and once around the station both the towel and my gown were soaked. This hindered my walking. So I kinda put off walking (except when they really insisted) for 24 hours. Then, of course, I developed a temperature. When called at home, the doctor said "GET HER UP WALKING". By then, all the other gastro patients had left except for me and one other lady. Walking brought my temp down, took away the shaking chills. My hemoglobin was dropping however and a transfusion was considered. Sunday morning, everything came together. I hadn't leaked in 48 hours, The other patient was wearing her own PJ's, so I put my own on, and at 4am, I got up and started walking. I'd make 4 trips around the corrodor, stop in the pretty waiting room, using my breathing machine, then another 4 trips. The vampire came through at 5am and yeah! my hemoglobin had risen 2 points. My temp was down. All I needed now was the Dr to release me. But I kept walking and walking, breathing and breathing. When I went outside and saw the hot, Central Valley sun, it was like being reborn. Regards Jan Couch
