I am 4 years post op this month and 60 years old. I can honestly say that I really didn't have a life until wls. My health is excellent, my weight is stable, and I have boundless energy. I think that the number 60 is old, but I have more energy than I had at 20. All I can say to those beginning this journey -- stay the course -- you are not going to believe how you are going to feel.

I am 2 1/2 years post op and I have been so immersed in my skinny life, that I have neglected to update myself. I am currently recovering from an lower body lift -- plastic surgery that I gave to my self as a reward for reaching my goal. After a lifetime of obesity, I had surgery at age 56 and weighed 416 lbs. Today I weigh 155 (my weight at 12 years old). For me, bariatric surgery has given me my life. I can run, jump, walk forever, and no longer take medication. Here I am, pushing 60, and feel I could live another 60. Hooray for me! For all of those of you still fighting the fight -- I am living proof it can be done!

I had my three-month post check up on Friday and I am down 75 pounds. I couldn’t be more pleased with my progress. On a sad note, Dr. Krahn has left U.S. Bariatrics in Orlando and returned to California. I will miss him. Now Dr. Marema is working double time until he finds a replacement. Now that I have some distance from the surgery and the pre-surgery anxiety, I have some words for those who are beginning their journey. The fear that you face before surgery is to be expected. It means that you are not taking this surgery lightly and that you understand what is coming. The only comfort that I can offer is that, while there is a chance you will not survive, what is the length and the quality of your life going to be if you don’t get control of your weight? As for the recovery from surgery, give yourself time. Keep a journal. I have had some pretty bad days, but as I look back in my journal, I see I continue to make progress in my health, mental state, and physical strength.
