Day 3 post-op and feeling good!

Feb 02, 2017

Yeah! I made it and I'm finally on the Looser's Bench! The much-anticipated start of a new, improved and healthier life is here. So far, now buyers remorse ;-)

My surgery went very well. I wasn't as nervous or anxious as I thought I was going to be before surgery. I didn't have to take anything for anxiety until I was getting prepped for surgery. I met the surgeon and her assistant just before I was brought in the operating room and also met the rest of the O.R. staff. All were so good at reassuring me that all was going to go well.

I had quite a bit of pain when I woke up which caused nausea but the drugs the nurse gave me resolved that pretty quick. What was more painful was my sore upper back and unfortunately, all the meds were not helping with that. They kept me in the recovery room for 4 hours instead of the usual 2 because I have a CPAP machine.

I was able to easily walk from the stretcher to my bed when they brought me to my room. It actually surprised me that I was able to walk normally without pain. My husband arrived at my room as I got there and we went for a walk in the hallway. It felt good to be off of my back. He stayed with me for a couple hours before heading back home to be with our daughter.

Unfortunately, I didn't get much sleep that night but who does at a hospital! The noise of the people in the hall and from the air mattress pumping machine, the nurse coming in to give me meds and check my vitals and the heart sensor that kept going off because it wasn't set up as "resting" mode and was alerting that my heart rate was too low made it very hard to be able to rest. At least I was able to spend some of the night on my right side to give my back a break.

Met with another doctor from the bariatric clinic who came early to check on me and see if all was good. I also saw my surgeon, Dr Neville, who also came to check on me and tell me that the surgery went pretty fast and that my liver was quite small which made it easier for them to perform the surgery. She was so nice and welcome me to come in and see her again later to show her my progress.

As soon as I got up to get dressed and pack my stuff, I realised that I was much more sore than the night before as all of the internal anaesthetics wore off. They gave me more pain medication for the hour-long car ride ahead of me on a rough road. The soreness stayed there for the whole day but got better in the evening as I started to get lots of gas. I spent the evening with an electric warming pad on my stomach to help ease the gas pain.

I had a great night sleep and felt pretty good this morning despite having still lots of gas. Had a small protein shake and was able to have a bowel movement which felt good. I'm now sipping my coffee slowly and enjoying my morning as the gas has quite diminished.
